Bridges play a vital role in resolving transportation problems in Egypt. The objective of this research is to predict the conditions of bridges expansion joints, with the aim of proposing appropriate maintenance and repair strategies in order to extend their lifespans. A thorough literature review of existing bridges expansion joints maintenance and repair strategies are conducted. Furthermore, visual inspections and surveying of existing bridges expansion joints in Egypt are conducted, with the findings of such observations documented and recorded. Moreover, an expansion joint management system (EJMS) is developed with the aim of recommending the optimum maintenance strategy for bridges that optimizes annual condition index (ACI) and cost. This model uses a combination of Fuzzy Logic (FL) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) in order to provide optimal recommendations. In addition, a transition matrix for predicting deterioration of expansion joints EJ using Markov Chain (MC) is developed. In order to test the model, several case studies of existing bridges in Egypt are used and the results are assessed against those documented through visual inspection. The comparison indicated that the developed EJMS is efficient in predicting the bridge EJs condition, where there is a deviation of 5% between the predicted condition from EJMS and the actual conditions observed through visual inspections. In addition, EJMS can play an important role in supporting decision makers in selecting the optimum maintenance and repair strategy that would maximizes the overall condition of expansion joints while meeting a certain budget constraint

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Practices Exposing Humans to Avian Influenza Viruses, Their Prevalence, and Rationale

Almost all human infections by avian influenza viruses (AIVs) are transmitted from poultry. A systematic review was conducted to identify practices associated with human infections, their prevalence, and rationale. Observational studies were identified through database searches. Meta-analysis produced combined odds ratio estimates. The prevalence of practices and rationales for their adoptions were reported. Of the 48,217 records initially identified, 65 articles were included. Direct and indirect exposures to poultry were associated with infection for all investigated viral subtypes and settings. For the most frequently reported practices, association with infection seemed stronger in markets than households, for sick and dead than healthy poultry, and for H7N9 than H5N1. Practices were often described in general terms and their frequency and intensity of contact were not provided. The prevalence of practices was highly variable across studies, and no studies comprehensively explored reasons behind the adoption of practices. Combining epidemiological and targeted anthropological studies would increase the spectrum and detail of practices that could be investigated and should aim to provide insights into the rationale(s) for their existence. A better understanding of these rationales may help to design more realistic and acceptable preventive public health measures and messages

Generic closed loop controller for power regulation in dual active bridge DC-DC converter with current stress minimization

This paper presents a comprehensive and generalized analysis of the bidirectional dual active bridge (DAB) DC/DC converter using triple phase shift (TPS) control to enable closed loop power regulation while minimizing current stress. The key new achievements are: a generic analysis in terms of possible conversion ratios/converter voltage gains (i.e. Buck/Boost/Unity), per unit based equations regardless of DAB ratings, and a new simple closed loop controller implementable in real time to meet desired power transfer regulation at minimum current stress. Per unit based analytical expressions are derived for converter AC RMS current as well as power transferred. An offline particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is used to obtain an extensive set of TPS ratios for minimizing the RMS current in the entire bidirectional power range of - 1 to 1 per unit. The extensive set of results achieved from PSO presents a generic data pool which is carefully analyzed to derive simple useful relations. Such relations enabled a generic closed loop controller design that can be implemented in real time avoiding the extensive computational capacity that iterative optimization techniques require. A detailed Simulink DAB switching model is used to validate precision of the proposed closed loop controller under various operating conditions. An experimental prototype also substantiates the results achieved

Iconic product advantage for improving marketing performance of Indonesian small and medium enterprises

    Get PDF
Purpose: To examine the role of iconic product advantage to improve marketing performance. Design/Methodology/Approach: This study uses primary data obtained from interviews based on a list of questions to 103 respondents of Salted Egg SMEs in Brebes Regency, Central Java Province, Indonesia. Findings: All hypotheses are accepted, market orientation influences iconic product advantage, product innovation influences iconic product advantage, dynamic capability influences iconic product advantage, iconic product advantage influences marketing performance. Practical Implications: There is no research that examines the market orientation of marketing performance that is bridged by the iconic product advantage. This research proves that the iconic product advantage bridges the market orientation with the marketing performance of Brebes Salted Egg SMEs that is supported by product innovation and dynamic capability. Originality/Value: Iconic product advantage is novelty in this study. Iconic product advantage is the superiority of the company by making products that become icons or symbols that serve as a reminder for consumers with the symbols contained in the product.peer-reviewe
