    Functional programming abstractions for weakly consistent systems

    In recent years, there has been a wide-spread adoption of both multicore and cloud computing. Traditionally, concurrent programmers have relied on the underlying system providing strong memory consistency, where there is a semblance of concurrent tasks operating over a shared global address space. However, providing scalable strong consistency guarantees as the scale of the system grows is an increasingly difficult endeavor. In a multicore setting, the increasing complexity and the lack of scalability of hardware mechanisms such as cache coherence deters scalable strong consistency. In geo-distributed compute clouds, the availability concerns in the presence of partial failures prohibit strong consistency. Hence, modern multicore and cloud computing platforms eschew strong consistency in favor of weakly consistent memory, where each task\u27s memory view is incomparable with the other tasks. As a result, programmers on these platforms must tackle the full complexity of concurrent programming for an asynchronous distributed system. ^ This dissertation argues that functional programming language abstractions can simplify scalable concurrent programming for weakly consistent systems. Functional programming espouses mutation-free programming, and rare mutations when present are explicit in their types. By controlling and explicitly reasoning about shared state mutations, functional abstractions simplify concurrent programming. Building upon this intuition, this dissertation presents three major contributions, each focused on addressing a particular challenge associated with weakly consistent loosely coupled systems. First, it describes A NERIS, a concurrent functional programming language and runtime for the Intel Single-chip Cloud Computer, and shows how to provide an efficient cache coherent virtual address space on top of a non cache coherent multicore architecture. Next, it describes RxCML, a distributed extension of MULTIMLTON and shows that, with the help of speculative execution, synchronous communication can be utilized as an efficient abstraction for programming asynchronous distributed systems. Finally, it presents QUELEA, a programming system for eventually consistent distributed stores, and shows that the choice of correct consistency level for replicated data type operations and transactions can be automated with the help of high-level declarative contracts

    Analysis domain model for shared virtual environments

    The field of shared virtual environments, which also encompasses online games and social 3D environments, has a system landscape consisting of multiple solutions that share great functional overlap. However, there is little system interoperability between the different solutions. A shared virtual environment has an associated problem domain that is highly complex raising difficult challenges to the development process, starting with the architectural design of the underlying system. This paper has two main contributions. The first contribution is a broad domain analysis of shared virtual environments, which enables developers to have a better understanding of the whole rather than the part(s).     Chi: a scalable and programmable control plane for distributed stream processing systems

    Stream-processing workloads and modern shared cluster environments exhibit high variability and unpredictability. Combined with the large parameter space and the diverse set of user SLOs, this makes modern streaming systems very challenging to statically configure and tune. To address these issues, in this paper we investigate a novel control-plane design, Chi, which supports continuous monitoring and feedback, and enables dynamic re-configuration. Chi leverages the key insight of embedding control-plane messages in the data-plane channels to achieve a low-latency and flexible control plane for stream-processing systems. Chi introduces a new reactive programming model and design mechanisms to asynchronously execute control policies, thus avoiding global synchronization. We show how this allows us to easily implement a wide spectrum of control policies targeting different use cases observed in production. Large-scale experiments using production workloads from a popular cloud provider demonstrate the flexibility and efficiency of our approach

    A scalable causal broadcast that tolerates dynamics of mobile networks

    International audienceCausal broadcast is at the core of collaborative applications, distributed databases, conferencing, or social networks. Existing causal broadcast algorithms are either not scalable or cannot be implemented on mobile networks because they do not take into account the features of these networks: limited capacities of nodes (computation, storage, energy), unreliable communication channels, and the dynamics of connections due to node mobility, node failure, and join/leave of nodes. This work presents a causal broadcast algorithm for mobile networks. The algorithm is scalable: control information piggybacked on messages and maintained on nodes is of small size. Experiments conducted on OMNeT++, a realistic network simulator, confirms the effectiveness of our causal broadcast protocol, rendering causal broadcast affordable in mobile networks

    dissertationAlmost all high performance computing applications are written in MPI, which will continue to be the case for at least the next several years. Given the huge and growing importance of MPI, and the size and sophistication of MPI codes, scalable and incisive MPI debugging tools are essential. Existing MPI debugging tools have, despite their strengths, many glaring de ficiencies, especially when it comes to debugging under the presence of nondeterminism related bugs, which are bugs that do not always show up during testing. These bugs usually become manifest when the systems are ported to di fferent platforms for production runs. This dissertation focuses on the problem of developing scalable dynamic verifi cation tools for MPI programs that can provide a coverage guarantee over the space of MPI nondeterminism. That is, the tools should be able to detect diff erent outcomes of nondeterministic events in an MPI program and enforce all those di fferent outcomes through repeated executions of the program with the same test harness. We propose to achieve the coverage guarantee by introducing efficient distributed causality tracking protocols that are based on the matches-before order. The matches-before order is introduced to address the shortcomings of the Lamport happens-before order [40], which is not sufficient to capture causality for MPI program executions due to the complexity of the MPI semantics. The two protocols we propose are the Lazy Lamport Clocks Protocol (LLCP) and the Lazy Vector Clocks Protocol (LVCP). LLCP provides good scalability with a small possibility of missing potential outcomes of nondeterministic events while LVCP provides full coverage guarantee with a scalability tradeoff . In practice, we show through our experiments that LLCP provides the same coverage as LVCP. This thesis makes the following contributions: •The MPI matches-before order that captures the causality between MPI events in an MPI execution. • Two distributed causality tracking protocols for MPI programs that rely on the matches-before order. • A Distributed Analyzer for MPI programs (DAMPI), which implements the two aforementioned protocols to provide scalable and modular dynamic verifi cation for MPI programs. • Scalability enhancement through algorithmic improvements for ISP, a dynamic verifi er for MPI programs

    SoK: Diving into DAG-based Blockchain Systems

    Blockchain plays an important role in cryptocurrency markets and technology services. However, limitations on high latency and low scalability retard their adoptions and applications in classic designs. Reconstructed blockchain systems have been proposed to avoid the consumption of competitive transactions caused by linear sequenced blocks. These systems, instead, structure transactions/blocks in the form of Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) and consequently re-build upper layer components including consensus, incentives, \textit{etc.} The promise of DAG-based blockchain systems is to enable fast confirmation (complete transactions within million seconds) and high scalability (attach transactions in parallel) without significantly compromising security. However, this field still lacks systematic work that summarises the DAG technique. To bridge the gap, this Systematization of Knowledge (SoK) provides a comprehensive analysis of DAG-based blockchain systems. Through deconstructing open-sourced systems and reviewing academic researches, we conclude the main components and featured properties of systems, and provide the approach to establish a DAG. With this in hand, we analyze the security and performance of several leading systems, followed by discussions and comparisons with concurrent (scaling blockchain) techniques. We further identify open challenges to highlight the potentiality of DAG-based solutions and indicate their promising directions for future research.Comment: Full versio

    Holistic System Design for Deterministic Replay.

    Deterministic replay systems record and reproduce the execution of a hardware or software system. While it is well known how to replay uniprocessor systems, it is much harder to provide deterministic replay of shared memory multithreaded programs on multiprocessors because shared memory accesses add a high-frequency source of non-determinism. This thesis proposes efficient multiprocessor replay systems: Respec, Chimera, and Rosa. Respec is an operating-system-based replay system. Respec is based on the observation that most program executions are data-race-free and for programs with no data races it is sufficient to record program input and the happens-before order of synchronization operations for replay. Respec speculates that a program is data-race-free and supports rollback and recovery from misspeculation. For racy programs, Respec employs a cheap runtime check that compares system call outputs and memory/register states of recorded and replayed processes at a semi-regular interval. Chimera uses a sound static data race detector to find all potential data races and instrument pairs of potentially racing instructions to transform an arbitrary program to make it data-race-free. Then, Chimera records only the non-deterministic inputs and the order of synchronization operations for replay. However, existing static data race detectors generate excessive false warnings, leading to high recording overhead. Chimera resolves this problem by employing a combination of profiling, symbolic analysis, and dynamic checks that target the sources of imprecision in the static data race detector. Rosa is a processor-based ultra-low overhead (less than one percent) replay solution that requires very little hardware support as it essentially only needs a log of cache misses to reproduce a multiprocessor execution. Unlike previous hardware-assisted systems, Rosa does not record shared memory dependencies at all. Instead, it infers them offline using a Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) solver.
