    An event based topic learning pipeline for neuroimaging literature mining

    Neuroimaging text mining extracts knowledge from neuroimaging texts and has received widespread attention. Topic learning is an important research focus of neuroimaging text mining. However, current neuroimaging topic learning researches mainly used traditional probability topic models to extract topics from literature and cannot obtain high-quality neuroimaging topics. The existing topic learning methods also cannot meet the requirements of topic learning oriented to full-text neuroimaging literature. In this paper, three types of neuroimaging research topic events are defined to describe the process and result of neuroimaging researches. An event based topic learning pipeline, called neuroimaging Event-BTM, is proposed to realize topic learning from full-text neuroimaging literature. The experimental results on the PLoS One data set show that the accuracy and completeness of the proposed method are significantly better than the existing main topic learning methods

    Face Restoration via Plug-and-Play 3D Facial Priors

    State-of-the-art face restoration methods employ deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to learn a mapping between degraded and sharp facial patterns by exploring local appearance knowledge. However, most of these methods do not well exploit facial structures and identity information, and only deal with task-specific face restoration (e.g.,face super-resolution or deblurring). In this paper, we propose cross-tasks and cross-models plug-and-play 3D facial priors to explicitly embed the network with the sharp facial structures for general face restoration tasks. Our 3D priors are the first to explore 3D morphable knowledge based on the fusion of parametric descriptions of face attributes (e.g., identity, facial expression, texture, illumination, and face pose). Furthermore, the priors can easily be incorporated into any network and are very efficient in improving the performance and accelerating the convergence speed. Firstly, a 3D face rendering branch is set up to obtain 3D priors of salient facial structures and identity knowledge. Secondly, for better exploiting this hierarchical information (i.e., intensity similarity, 3D facial structure, and identity content), a spatial attention module is designed for image restoration problems. Extensive face restoration experiments including face super-resolution and deblurring demonstrate that the proposed 3D priors achieve superior face restoration results over the state-of-the-art algorithm

    Basic studies in denotational mathematics and mathematical engineering have led to the theory of abstract intelligence (aI), which is a set of mathematical models of natural and computational intelligence in cognitive informatics (CI) and cognitive computing (CC). Abstract intelligence triggers the recent breakthroughs in cognitive systems such as cognitive computers, cognitive robots, cognitive neural networks, and cognitive learning. This paper reports a set of position statements presented in the plenary panel (Part II) of IEEE ICCI*CC’16 on Cognitive Informatics and Cognitive Computing at Stanford University.     Comprehensive review of vision-based fall detection systems

    Vision-based fall detection systems have experienced fast development over the last years. To determine the course of its evolution and help new researchers, the main audience of this paper, a comprehensive revision of all published articles in the main scientific databases regarding this area during the last five years has been made. After a selection process, detailed in the Materials and Methods Section, eighty-one systems were thoroughly reviewed. Their characterization and classification techniques were analyzed and categorized. Their performance data were also studied, and comparisons were made to determine which classifying methods best work in this field. The evolution of artificial vision technology, very positively influenced by the incorporation of artificial neural networks, has allowed fall characterization to become more resistant to noise resultant from illumination phenomena or occlusion. The classification has also taken advantage of these networks, and the field starts using robots to make these systems mobile. However, datasets used to train them lack real-world data, raising doubts about their performances facing real elderly falls. In addition, there is no evidence of strong connections between the elderly and the communities of researchers

    LETTER FROM THE DEAN I am pleased to share with you the College of Computing and Digital Media’s (CDM) 2017-18 annual report, highlighting the many achievements across our community. It was a big year. We began offering five new programs (two bachelor’s, two master’s, and one PhD) across our three schools, in addition to several new certificate programs through our Institute for Professional Development. We built new, cutting-edge spaces to support these and other programs— most notably a 4,500 square-foot makerspace, a robotics and medical engineering lab, an augmented and virtual reality lab, and plans for a cyber-physical systems project lab. Our faculty continued to pursue their research and creative agendas, offering collaborative opportunities with students and partners. CDM students and alumni were celebrated for their many achievements— everything from leading the winning teams at the U.S. Cyber Challenge and Campus 1871 to showcasing their games at juried festivals and winning national screenwriting competitions. We encouraged greater research and teaching collaboration, both between our own schools and with units outside CDM. Design and Computing faculty are working together on an NSA grant for smart home devices that considers both software and interface/design, as well as a new grant-funded game lab. One Project Bluelight film team collaborated with The Theatre School and the School of Music while CDM and College of Science and Health faculty joined forces to research the links between traumatic brain injury, domestic violence, and deep games. It has been exciting and inspiring to witness the accomplishments of our innovative and dedicated community. We are proud to provide the space and resources for them to do their exceptional work.     Spiking Neural Networks for Computational Intelligence:An Overview

    Deep neural networks with rate-based neurons have exhibited tremendous progress in the last decade. However, the same level of progress has not been observed in research on spiking neural networks (SNN), despite their capability to handle temporal data, energy-efficiency and low latency. This could be because the benchmarking techniques for SNNs are based on the methods used for evaluating deep neural networks, which do not provide a clear evaluation of the capabilities of SNNs. Particularly, the benchmarking of SNN approaches with regards to energy efficiency and latency requires realization in suitable hardware, which imposes additional temporal and resource constraints upon ongoing projects. This review aims to provide an overview of the current real-world applications of SNNs and identifies steps to accelerate research involving SNNs in the future
