    Subspace Representations and Learning for Visual Recognition

    Pervasive and affordable sensor and storage technology enables the acquisition of an ever-rising amount of visual data. The ability to extract semantic information by interpreting, indexing and searching visual data is impacting domains such as surveillance, robotics, intelligence, human- computer interaction, navigation, healthcare, and several others. This further stimulates the investigation of automated extraction techniques that are more efficient, and robust against the many sources of noise affecting the already complex visual data, which is carrying the semantic information of interest. We address the problem by designing novel visual data representations, based on learning data subspace decompositions that are invariant against noise, while being informative for the task at hand. We use this guiding principle to tackle several visual recognition problems, including detection and recognition of human interactions from surveillance video, face recognition in unconstrained environments, and domain generalization for object recognition.;By interpreting visual data with a simple additive noise model, we consider the subspaces spanned by the model portion (model subspace) and the noise portion (variation subspace). We observe that decomposing the variation subspace against the model subspace gives rise to the so-called parity subspace. Decomposing the model subspace against the variation subspace instead gives rise to what we name invariant subspace. We extend the use of kernel techniques for the parity subspace. This enables modeling the highly non-linear temporal trajectories describing human behavior, and performing detection and recognition of human interactions. In addition, we introduce supervised low-rank matrix decomposition techniques for learning the invariant subspace for two other tasks. We learn invariant representations for face recognition from grossly corrupted images, and we learn object recognition classifiers that are invariant to the so-called domain bias.;Extensive experiments using the benchmark datasets publicly available for each of the three tasks, show that learning representations based on subspace decompositions invariant to the sources of noise lead to results comparable or better than the state-of-the-art

    Non-Rigid Structure from Motion

    This thesis revisits a challenging classical problem in geometric computer vision known as "Non-Rigid Structure-from-Motion" (NRSfM). It is a well-known problem where the task is to recover the 3D shape and motion of a non-rigidly moving object from image data. A reliable solution to this problem is valuable in several industrial applications such as virtual reality, medical surgery, animation movies etc. Nevertheless, to date, there does not exist any algorithm that can solve NRSfM for all kinds of conceivable motion. As a result, additional constraints and assumptions are often employed to solve NRSfM. The task is challenging due to the inherent unconstrained nature of the problem itself as many 3D varying configurations can have similar image projections. The problem becomes even more challenging if the camera is moving along with the object. The thesis takes on a modern view to this challenging problem and proposes a few algorithms that have set a new performance benchmark to solve NRSfM. The thesis not only discusses the classical work in NRSfM but also proposes some powerful elementary modification to it. The foundation of this thesis surpass the traditional single object NRSFM and for the first time provides an effective formulation to realise multi-body NRSfM. Most techniques for NRSfM under factorisation can only handle sparse feature correspondences. These sparse features are then used to construct a scene using the organisation of points, lines, planes or other elementary geometric primitive. Nevertheless, sparse representation of the scene provides an incomplete information about the scene. This thesis goes from sparse NRSfM to dense NRSfM for a single object, and then slowly lifts the intuition to realise dense 3D reconstruction of the entire dynamic scene as a global as rigid as possible deformation problem. The core of this work goes beyond the traditional approach to deal with deformation. It shows that relative scales for multiple deforming objects can be recovered under some mild assumption about the scene. The work proposes a new approach for dense detailed 3D reconstruction of a complex dynamic scene from two perspective frames. Since the method does not need any depth information nor it assumes a template prior, or per-object segmentation, or knowledge about the rigidity of the dynamic scene, it is applicable to a wide range of scenarios including YouTube Videos. Lastly, this thesis provides a new way to perceive the depth of a dynamic scene which essentially trivialises the notion of motion estimation as a compulsory step to solve this problem. Conventional geometric methods to address depth estimation requires a reliable estimate of motion parameters for each moving object, which is difficult to obtain and validate. In contrast, this thesis introduces a new motion-free approach to estimate the dense depth map of a complex dynamic scene for successive/multiple frames. The work show that given per-pixel optical flow correspondences between two consecutive frames and the sparse depth prior for the reference frame, we can recover the dense depth map for the successive frames without solving for motion parameters. By assigning the locally rigid structure to the piece-wise planar approximation of a dynamic scene which transforms as rigid as possible over frames, we can bypass the motion estimation step. Experiments results and MATLAB codes on relevant examples are provided to validate the motion-free idea

    La présente thèse a pour objet d explorer les potentialités d une méthode prometteuse de l optimisation conique, la programmation semi-définie positive (SDP), pour les problèmes de management d énergie, à savoir relatifs à la satisfaction des équilibres offre-demande électrique et gazier.Nos travaux se déclinent selon deux axes. Tout d abord nous nous intéressons à l utilisation de la SDP pour produire des relaxations de problèmes combinatoires et quadratiques. Si une relaxation SDP dite standard peut être élaborée très simplement, il est généralement souhaitable de la renforcer par des coupes, pouvant être déterminées par l'étude de la structure du problème ou à l'aide de méthodes plus systématiques. Nous mettons en œuvre ces deux approches sur différentes modélisations du problème de planification des arrêts nucléaires, réputé pour sa difficulté combinatoire. Nous terminons sur ce sujet par une expérimentation de la hiérarchie de Lasserre, donnant lieu à une suite de SDP dont la valeur optimale tend vers la solution du problème initial.Le second axe de la thèse porte sur l'application de la SDP à la prise en compte de l'incertitude. Nous mettons en œuvre une approche originale dénommée optimisation distributionnellement robuste , pouvant être vue comme un compromis entre optimisation stochastique et optimisation robuste et menant à des approximations sous forme de SDP. Nous nous appliquons à estimer l'apport de cette approche sur un problème d'équilibre offre-demande avec incertitude. Puis, nous présentons une relaxation SDP pour les problèmes MISOCP. Cette relaxation se révèle être de très bonne qualité, tout en ne nécessitant qu un temps de calcul raisonnable. La SDP se confirme donc être une méthode d optimisation prometteuse qui offre de nombreuses opportunités d'innovation en management d énergie.The present thesis aims at exploring the potentialities of a powerful optimization technique, namely Semidefinite Programming, for addressing some difficult problems of energy management. We pursue two main objectives. The first one consists of using SDP to provide tight relaxations of combinatorial and quadratic problems. A first relaxation, called standard can be derived in a generic way but it is generally desirable to reinforce them, by means of tailor-made tools or in a systematic fashion. These two approaches are implemented on different models of the Nuclear Outages Scheduling Problem, a famous combinatorial problem. We conclude this topic by experimenting the Lasserre's hierarchy on this problem, leading to a sequence of semidefinite relaxations whose optimal values tends to the optimal value of the initial problem.The second objective deals with the use of SDP for the treatment of uncertainty. We investigate an original approach called distributionnally robust optimization , that can be seen as a compromise between stochastic and robust optimization and admits approximations under the form of a SDP. We compare the benefits of this method w.r.t classical approaches on a demand/supply equilibrium problem. Finally, we propose a scheme for deriving SDP relaxations of MISOCP and we report promising computational results indicating that the semidefinite relaxation improves significantly the continuous relaxation, while requiring a reasonable computational effort.SDP therefore proves to be a promising optimization method that offers great opportunities for innovation in energy management.PARIS11-SCD-Bib. électronique (914719901) / SudocSudocFranceF

    On Algebraic Singularities, Finite Graphs and D-Brane Gauge Theories: A String Theoretic Perspective

    In this writing we shall address certain beautiful inter-relations between the construction of 4-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and resolution of algebraic singularities, from the perspective of String Theory. We review in some detail the requisite background in both the mathematics, such as orbifolds, symplectic quotients and quiver representations, as well as the physics, such as gauged linear sigma models, geometrical engineering, Hanany-Witten setups and D-brane probes. We investigate aspects of world-volume gauge dynamics using D-brane resolutions of various Calabi-Yau singularities, notably Gorenstein quotients and toric singularities. Attention will be paid to the general methodology of constructing gauge theories for these singular backgrounds, with and without the presence of the NS-NS B-field, as well as the T-duals to brane setups and branes wrapping cycles in the mirror geometry. Applications of such diverse and elegant mathematics as crepant resolution of algebraic singularities, representation of finite groups and finite graphs, modular invariants of affine Lie algebras, etc. will naturally arise. Various viewpoints and generalisations of McKay's Correspondence will also be considered. The present work is a transcription of excerpts from the first three volumes of the author's PhD thesis which was written under the direction of Prof. A.
