    Squarepants in a Tree: Sum of Subtree Clustering and Hyperbolic Pants Decomposition

    We provide efficient constant factor approximation algorithms for the problems of finding a hierarchical clustering of a point set in any metric space, minimizing the sum of minimimum spanning tree lengths within each cluster, and in the hyperbolic or Euclidean planes, minimizing the sum of cluster perimeters. Our algorithms for the hyperbolic and Euclidean planes can also be used to provide a pants decomposition, that is, a set of disjoint simple closed curves partitioning the plane minus the input points into subsets with exactly three boundary components, with approximately minimum total length. In the Euclidean case, these curves are squares; in the hyperbolic case, they combine our Euclidean square pants decomposition with our tree clustering method for general metric spaces.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures.     The Max-Distance Network Creation Game on General Host Graphs

    In this paper we study a generalization of the classic \emph{network creation game} in the scenario in which the nn players sit on a given arbitrary \emph{host graph}, which constrains the set of edges a player can activate at a cost of α0\alpha \geq 0 each. This finds its motivations in the physical limitations one can have in constructing links in practice, and it has been studied in the past only when the routing cost component of a player is given by the sum of distances to all the other nodes. Here, we focus on another popular routing cost, namely that which takes into account for each player its \emph{maximum} distance to any other player. For this version of the game, we first analyze some of its computational and dynamic aspects, and then we address the problem of understanding the structure of associated pure Nash equilibria. In this respect, we show that the corresponding price of anarchy (PoA) is fairly bad, even for several basic classes of host graphs. More precisely, we first exhibit a lower bound of Ω(n/(1+α))\Omega (\sqrt{ n / (1+\alpha)}) for any α=o(n)\alpha = o(n). Notice that this implies a counter-intuitive lower bound of Ω(n)\Omega(\sqrt{n}) for very small values of α\alpha (i.e., edges can be activated almost for free). Then, we show that when the host graph is restricted to be either kk-regular (for any constant k3k \geq 3), or a 2-dimensional grid, the PoA is still Ω(1+min{α,nα})\Omega(1+\min\{\alpha, \frac{n}{\alpha}\}), which is proven to be tight for α=Ω(n)\alpha=\Omega(\sqrt{n}). On the positive side, if αn\alpha \geq n, we show the PoA is O(1)O(1). Finally, in the case in which the host graph is very sparse (i.e., E(H)=n1+k|E(H)|=n-1+k, with k=O(1)k=O(1)), we prove that the PoA is O(1)O(1), for any α\alpha.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    Spectra of "Real-World" Graphs: Beyond the Semi-Circle Law

    Many natural and social systems develop complex networks, that are usually modelled as random graphs. The eigenvalue spectrum of these graphs provides information about their structural properties. While the semi-circle law is known to describe the spectral density of uncorrelated random graphs, much less is known about the eigenvalues of real-world graphs, describing such complex systems as the Internet, metabolic pathways, networks of power stations, scientific collaborations or movie actors, which are inherently correlated and usually very sparse. An important limitation in addressing the spectra of these systems is that the numerical determination of the spectra for systems with more than a few thousand nodes is prohibitively time and memory consuming. Making use of recent advances in algorithms for spectral characterization, here we develop new methods to determine the eigenvalues of networks comparable in size to real systems, obtaining several surprising results on the spectra of adjacency matrices corresponding to models of real-world graphs. We find that when the number of links grows as the number of nodes, the spectral density of uncorrelated random graphs does not converge to the semi-circle law. Furthermore, the spectral densities of real-world graphs have specific features depending on the details of the corresponding models. In particular, scale-free graphs develop a triangle-like spectral density with a power law tail, while small-world graphs have a complex spectral density function consisting of several sharp peaks. These and further results indicate that the spectra of correlated graphs represent a practical tool for graph classification and can provide useful insight into the relevant structural properties of real networks.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures (corrected typos, added references) accepted for Phys.     Algorithmic Aspects of Energy-Delay Tradeoff in Multihop Cooperative Wireless Networks

    We consider the problem of energy-efficient transmission in delay constrained cooperative multihop wireless networks. The combinatorial nature of cooperative multihop schemes makes it difficult to design efficient polynomial-time algorithms for deciding which nodes should take part in cooperation, and when and with what power they should transmit. In this work, we tackle this problem in memoryless networks with or without delay constraints, i.e., quality of service guarantee. We analyze a wide class of setups, including unicast, multicast, and broadcast, and two main cooperative approaches, namely: energy accumulation (EA) and mutual information accumulation (MIA). We provide a generalized algorithmic formulation of the problem that encompasses all those cases. We investigate the similarities and differences of EA and MIA in our generalized formulation. We prove that the broadcast and multicast problems are, in general, not only NP hard but also o(log(n)) inapproximable. We break these problems into three parts: ordering, scheduling and power control, and propose a novel algorithm that, given an ordering, can optimally solve the joint power allocation and scheduling problems simultaneously in polynomial time. We further show empirically that this algorithm used in conjunction with an ordering derived heuristically using the Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm yields near-optimal performance in typical settings. For the unicast case, we prove that although the problem remains NP hard with MIA, it can be solved optimally and in polynomial time when EA is used. We further use our algorithm to study numerically the trade-off between delay and power-efficiency in cooperative broadcast and compare the performance of EA vs MIA as well as the performance of our cooperative algorithm with a smart noncooperative algorithm in a broadcast setting.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure

    A note on the data-driven capacity of P2P networks

    We consider two capacity problems in P2P networks. In the first one, the nodes have an infinite amount of data to send and the goal is to optimally allocate their uplink bandwidths such that the demands of every peer in terms of receiving data rate are met. We solve this problem through a mapping from a node-weighted graph featuring two labels per node to a max flow problem on an edge-weighted bipartite graph. In the second problem under consideration, the resource allocation is driven by the availability of the data resource that the peers are interested in sharing. That is a node cannot allocate its uplink resources unless it has data to transmit first. The problem of uplink bandwidth allocation is then equivalent to constructing a set of directed trees in the overlay such that the number of nodes receiving the data is maximized while the uplink capacities of the peers are not exceeded. We show that the problem is NP-complete, and provide a linear programming decomposition decoupling it into a master problem and multiple slave subproblems that can be resolved in polynomial time. We also design a heuristic algorithm in order to compute a suboptimal solution in a reasonable time. This algorithm requires only a local knowledge from nodes, so it should support distributed implementations. We analyze both problems through a series of simulation experiments featuring different network sizes and network densities. On large networks, we compare our heuristic and its variants with a genetic algorithm and show that our heuristic computes the better resource allocation. On smaller networks, we contrast these performances to that of the exact algorithm and show that resource allocation fulfilling a large part of the peer can be found, even for hard configuration where no resources are in excess.Comment: 10 pages, technical report assisting a submissio
