    Dynamic characteristics of specialty composite structures with embedded damping layers

    Damping mechanics for simulating the damped dynamic characteristics in specialty composite structures with compliant interlaminar damping layers are presented. Finite-element based mechanics incorporating a discrete layer (or layer-wise) laminate damping theory are utilized to represent general laminate configurations in terms of lay-up and fiber orientation angles, cross-sectional thickness, shape, and boundary conditions. Evaluations of the method with exact solutions and experimental data illustrate the accuracy of the method. Additional applications investigate the potential for significant damping enhancement in angle-ply composite laminates with cocured interlaminar damping layers

    Disconnected Skeleton: Shape at its Absolute Scale

    We present a new skeletal representation along with a matching framework to address the deformable shape recognition problem. The disconnectedness arises as a result of excessive regularization that we use to describe a shape at an attainably coarse scale. Our motivation is to rely on the stable properties of the shape instead of inaccurately measured secondary details. The new representation does not suffer from the common instability problems of traditional connected skeletons, and the matching process gives quite successful results on a diverse database of 2D shapes. An important difference of our approach from the conventional use of the skeleton is that we replace the local coordinate frame with a global Euclidean frame supported by additional mechanisms to handle articulations and local boundary deformations.     Tetrahedral mesh improvement using moving mesh smoothing, lazy searching flips, and RBF surface reconstruction

    Given a tetrahedral mesh and objective functionals measuring the mesh quality which take into account the shape, size, and orientation of the mesh elements, our aim is to improve the mesh quality as much as possible. In this paper, we combine the moving mesh smoothing, based on the integration of an ordinary differential equation coming from a given functional, with the lazy flip technique, a reversible edge removal algorithm to modify the mesh connectivity. Moreover, we utilize radial basis function (RBF) surface reconstruction to improve tetrahedral meshes with curved boundary surfaces. Numerical tests show that the combination of these techniques into a mesh improvement framework achieves results which are comparable and even better than the previously reported ones.Comment: Revised and improved versio

    Optimization of gridshell bar orientation using a simplified genetic approach

    Gridshells are defined as structures that have the shape and rigidity of a double curvature shell but consist of a grid instead of a continuous surface. This study concerns those obtained by elastic deformation of an initially flat two-way grid. This paper presents a novel approach to generate gridshells on an imposed shape under imposed boundary conditions. A numerical tool based on a geometrical method, the compass method, is developed. It is coupled with genetic algorithms to optimize the orientation of gridshell bars in order to minimize the stresses and therefore to avoid bar breakage during the construction phase.     Part Description and Segmentation Using Contour, Surface and Volumetric Primitives

    The problem of part definition, description, and decomposition is central to the shape recognition systems. The Ultimate goal of segmenting range images into meaningful parts and objects has proved to be very difficult to realize, mainly due to the isolation of the segmentation problem from the issue of representation. We propose a paradigm for part description and segmentation by integration of contour, surface, and volumetric primitives. Unlike previous approaches, we have used geometric properties derived from both boundary-based (surface contours and occluding contours), and primitive-based (quadric patches and superquadric models) representations to define and recover part-whole relationships, without a priori knowledge about the objects or object domain. The object shape is described at three levels of complexity, each contributing to the overall shape. Our approach can be summarized as answering the following question : Given that we have all three different modules for extracting volume, surface and boundary properties, how should they be invoked, evaluated and integrated? Volume and boundary fitting, and surface description are performed in parallel to incorporate the best of the coarse to fine and fine to coarse segmentation strategy. The process involves feedback between the segmentor (the Control Module) and individual shape description modules. The control module evaluates the intermediate descriptions and formulates hypotheses about parts. Hypotheses are further tested by the segmentor and the descriptors. The descriptions thus obtained are independent of position, orientation, scale, domain and domain properties, and are based purely on geometric considerations. They are extremely useful for the high level domain dependent symbolic reasoning processes, which need not deal with tremendous amount of data, but only with a rich description of data in terms of primitives recovered at various levels of complexity

    Applying Computer Vision Techniques to Topographic Objects

    Automatic structuring (feature coding and object recognition) of topographic data, such as that derived from air survey or raster scanning large-scale paper maps, requires the classification of objects such as buildings, roads, rivers, fields and railways. The recognition of objects is largely based on the matching of descriptions of shapes. Fourier descriptors, moment invariants, boundary chain coding and scalar descriptors are widely used in image processing and computer vision to describe and classify shapes. They have been developed to describe shape irrespective of position, orientation and scale. The applicability of the above four methods to topographic shapes is described and their usefulness evaluated.
