Boundary Objects and their Use in Agile Systems Engineering
Agile methods are increasingly introduced in automotive companies in the
attempt to become more efficient and flexible in the system development. The
adoption of agile practices influences communication between stakeholders, but
also makes companies rethink the management of artifacts and documentation like
requirements, safety compliance documents, and architecture models.
Practitioners aim to reduce irrelevant documentation, but face a lack of
guidance to determine what artifacts are needed and how they should be managed.
This paper presents artifacts, challenges, guidelines, and practices for the
continuous management of systems engineering artifacts in automotive based on a
theoretical and empirical understanding of the topic. In collaboration with 53
practitioners from six automotive companies, we conducted a design-science
study involving interviews, a questionnaire, focus groups, and practical data
analysis of a systems engineering tool. The guidelines suggest the distinction
between artifacts that are shared among different actors in a company (boundary
objects) and those that are used within a team (locally relevant artifacts). We
propose an analysis approach to identify boundary objects and three practices
to manage systems engineering artifacts in industry
Information technology as boundary object for transformational learning
Collaborative work is considered as a way to improve productivity and value generation in
construction. However, recent research demonstrates that socio-cognitive factors related to fragmentation of specialized knowledge may hinder team performance. New methods based on theories of practice are emerging in Computer Supported Collaborative Work and organisational learning to break these knowledge boundaries,
facilitating knowledge sharing and the generation of new knowledge through transformational learning. According to these theories, objects used in professional practice play a key role in mediating interactions. Rules and methods related to these practices are also embedded in these objects. Therefore changing collaborative
patterns demand reconfiguring objects that are at the boundary between specialized practices, namely boundary objects. This research is unique in presenting an IT strategy in which technology is used as a boundary object to facilitate transformational learning in collaborative design work
The interaction of lean and building information modeling in construction
Lean construction and Building Information Modeling are quite different initiatives, but both are having profound impacts on the construction industry. A rigorous analysis of the myriad specific interactions between them indicates that a synergy exists which, if properly understood in theoretical terms, can be exploited to improve construction processes beyond the degree to which it might be improved by application of either of these paradigms independently. Using a matrix that juxtaposes BIM functionalities with prescriptive lean construction principles, fifty-six interactions have been identified, all but four of which represent constructive interaction. Although evidence for the majority of these has been found, the matrix is not considered complete, but rather a framework for research to
explore the degree of validity of the interactions. Construction executives, managers, designers and developers of IT systems for construction can also benefit from the framework as an aid to recognizing the potential synergies when planning their lean and BIM adoption strategies

A Combinatorial Parametric Engineering Model for Solid Freeform Fabrication
Fabricated parts are often represented as compact connected smooth 3-manifolds with
boundary, where the boundaries consist of compact smooth 2-manifolds. This class of mathematical
structures includes topological spaces with enclosed voids and tunnels. Useful information about these
structures are coded into level functions (Morse functions) which map points in the 3-manifold onto their
height above a fixed plane. By definition, Morse functions are smooth functions, all of whose critical
points are nondegenerate. This information is presented by the Reeb graph construction that develops a
topologically informative skeleton of the manifold whose nodes are the critical points of the Morse function
and whose edges are associated with the connected components between critical slices. This approach
accurately captures the SFF process: using a solid geometric model of the part, defining surface
boundaries; selecting a part orientation; forming planar slices, decomposing the solid into a sequence of
thin cross-sectional polyhedral layers; and then fabricating the part by producing the polyhedra by additive
manufacturing. This note will define a qualitative and combinatorial parametric engineering model of the
SFF part design process. The objects under study will be abstract simplicial complexes K with boundary
âK. Systems of labeled 2-surfaces in K, called slices, will be associated with the cross-sectional polyhedral
layers. The labeled slices are mapped into a family of digraph automata, which, unlike cellular automata,
are defined not on regular lattices with simple connectivities (cells usually have either 4 or 8 cell
neighborhoods) but on unrestricted digraphs whose connectivities are irregular and more complicated.Mechanical Engineerin
The influence of a collaborative procurement approach using integrated design in construction on project team performance
Purpose â The purpose of the paper is to study the influence of procurement on the performance of integrated design teams.
Design/methodology/approach â The research paradigm is based on Russian socio-constructivist approach to activity theory. Activity theory, as opposed to natural or social science, is a design science approach that focuses on the context aspect of project. A triangulation of qualitative research methods is used to investigate the dynamic of integrated teams in two different procurement contexts.
Findings â The paper is conclusive regarding the influence of procurement on team efficiency. It demonstrates that traditional procurement processes reinforce socio-cognitive barriers that hinder team efficiency. It also illustrates how new procurement modes can transform the dynamic of relationships between the client and the members of the supply chain, and have a positive impact on teamperformance.
Practical implications â The paper demonstrates first that problems with integrated design team efficiency are related to context and not process â they are not technical but socio-cognitive; second that fragmented transactional contracting increases socio-cognitive barriers that hinder integrated design team performance; third that new forms of relational contracting may help to mitigate socio-cognitive barriers and improve integrated design team performance, fourth that changing the context through procurement does not address the problem of obsolete design practices.
Originality/value â The paper brings together theories of production in lean construction and social learning as a rival approach to traditional project management theory for demonstrating the importance of context on team performance
Where Rhetoric and Lean Meet
This paper aims at an initial analysis and explanation of lean through the lens of the discipline of rhetoric. First, the ancient origin, central ideas, subsequent history and current interpretations of rhetoric are outlined. Then, the overall meeting points of rhetoric and lean are discussed. At the outset, it is contended that certain arguments that can be used as a justification in rhetoric seem fertile for understanding the difference between lean and conventional management. Then, persuasion towards compliance in production is discussed. The field of visual management is argued to have an implicit foundation in rhetoric. The existence of a common ground of values, facts and presumptions between the speaker and the audience is emphasized in rhetoric; it is contended that lean construction in many ways endeavours to create such a common ground among the project participants. Regarding deliberation, the rhetorical dimensions in the methods of A3 and Choosing by Advantages are discussed.
