    Multi-objective optimization of a wing fence on an unmanned aerial vehicle using surrogate-derived gradients

    In this paper, the multi-objective, multifidelity optimization of a wing fence on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) near stall is presented. The UAV under consideration is characterized by a blended wing body (BWB), which increases its efficiency, and a tailless design, which leads to a swept wing to ensure longitudinal static stability. The consequence is a possible appearance of a nose-up moment, loss of lift initiating at the tips, and reduced controllability during landing, commonly referred to as tip stall. A possible solution to counter this phenomenon is wing fences: planes placed on top of the wing aligned with the flow and developed from the idea of stopping the transverse component of the boundary layer flow. These are optimized to obtain the design that would fence off the appearance of a pitch-up moment at high angles of attack, without a significant loss of lift and controllability. This brings forth a constrained multi-objective optimization problem. The evaluations are performed through unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations. However, since controllability cannot be directly assessed through computational fluid dynamics (CFD), surrogate-derived gradients are used. An efficient global optimization framework is developed employing surrogate modeling, namely regressive co-Kriging, updated using a multi-objective formulation of the expected improvement. The result is a wing fence design that extends the flight envelope of the aircraft, obtained with a feasible computational budget

    The purpose of this selected bibliography (281 citations) is to list available, unclassified, unlimited publications which provide aerodynamic data on major aircraft and missiles currently used by the military forces of the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Technical disciplines surveyed include aerodynamic performance, static and dynamic stability, stall-spin, flutter, buffet, inlets nozzles, flap performance, and flying qualities. Concentration is on specific aircraft including fighters, bombers, helicopters, missiles, and some work on transports, which are or could be used for military purposes. The bibliography is limited to material published from 1970 to 1980. The publications herein illustrate many of the types of aerodynamic data obtained in the course of aircraft development programs and may therefore provide some guidance in identifying problems to be expected in the conduct of such work. As such, this information may be useful in planning future research programs

    Aerodynamic configuration development of the highly maneuverable aircraft technology remotely piloted research vehicle

    The aerodynamic development of the highly maneuverable aircraft technology remotely piloted research vehicle (HiMAT/RPRV) from the conceptual design to the final configuration is presented. The design integrates several advanced concepts to achieve a high degree of transonic maneuverability, and was keyed to sustained maneuverability goals while other fighter typical performance characteristics were maintained. When tests of the baseline configuration indicated deficiencies in the technology integration and design techniques, the vehicle was reconfigured to satisfy the subcritical and supersonic requirements. Drag-due-to-lift levels only 5 percent higher than the optimum were obtained for the wind tunnel model at a lift coefficient of 1 for Mach numbers of up to 0.8. The transonic drag rise was progressively lowered with the application of nonlinear potential flow analyses coupled with experimental data

    Integrated process and control modelling of water recirculation in once-through boilers during low load and transient operation

    Power plant stability at lower loads is becoming ever more important, highlighting the increasing requirement for the development of advanced models and tools to analyse and design systems. Such tools enable a better understanding of the thermo-fluid processes and their dynamics, which improves the ability to specify and design better control algorithms and systems. During low load operation and transients, such as start-up and shutdown, the required water flow rate through the evaporator tubes of once-though boilers must be significantly higher than the evaporation rate to protect against overheating of the tubes until once-through operation is reached. Controlling the minimum required water flow rate through the evaporator and economiser is notoriously difficult. Within industry, strong emphasis is placed on maintaining the minimum required flow through the economiser and evaporator without adequate consideration of the potential thermal fatigue damage on the economiser, evaporator and superheater components and the risk of turbine quenching incidents. The purpose of this study was to develop an integrated process and control model that can be used to study transient events. The model developed in Flownex can simulate the complex thermo-fluid processes and associated controls of the feedwater start-up system. This includes the waterrecirculation loop, and allows for detailed transient analysis of the complete integrated system. The model was validated using data from an actual power plant in steady state as well as a transient cold start-up, up to once-through operation. Transient results from the model are also compared to the power plant unit during start-up for the addition or loss of mills using the existing control strategy. The model results compare well with the actual process behaviour. A new control strategy was then proposed and tested using the model. The results indicated significant improvement in control performance and overall controllability of the start-up system, and the large temperature fluctuations currently experienced at the economiser inlet during transients were significantly reduced. The new control strategy was also implemented on a real power plant unit undergoing commissioning. During all modes of start-ups (cold, warm and hot), as well as transients, the performance of the control system showed significant improvement, with a notable decline in instabilities of the feedwater flow. As predicted in the model, the large temperature fluctuations are significantly reduced. The new model therefore enabled the development of an improved control strategy that reduces damaging thermal fatigue. The general controllability of transients is also significantly improved, thereby minimizing risks of water carry-over, quenching and unit trips during start-up

    Numerical Investigation of the Intake Flow Characteristics for a Ramjet Engine with and without Heat Addition in the Combustion Chamber

    The flow field in the supersonic mixed compression axisymmetric as well as two-dimensional intake have been investigated numerically. The flow characteristics, such as pressure, temperature, and velocity have been obtained. An enlarged chamber with a supersonic convergent-divergent nozzle has been integrated at the air intake exit to simulate the ramjet engine. Suitable heat addition at the inner surface of the wall has enabled the simulation of combustion chamber condition. The well-known modes of operation of the ramjet engine air intake have been predicted by the mathematical simulations. A comparative study for supercritical, critical, and subcritical -; conditions has been presented. The predicted flow features including shock locations and the static pressure distributions along the cowl, as well as the centre body are in agreement with the available experimental results in the published literature. The effect of thermal input in the combustion chamber on the flow characteristics of the air intake has been studied in detail. The characteristic curve of generic supersonic air intake can be obtained through these numerical studies
