    An acoustic-phonetic approach in automatic Arabic speech recognition

    In a large vocabulary speech recognition system the broad phonetic classification technique is used instead of detailed phonetic analysis to overcome the variability in the acoustic realisation of utterances. The broad phonetic description of a word is used as a means of lexical access, where the lexicon is structured into sets of words sharing the same broad phonetic labelling. This approach has been applied to a large vocabulary isolated word Arabic speech recognition system. Statistical studies have been carried out on 10,000 Arabic words (converted to phonemic form) involving different combinations of broad phonetic classes. Some particular features of the Arabic language have been exploited. The results show that vowels represent about 43% of the total number of phonemes. They also show that about 38% of the words can uniquely be represented at this level by using eight broad phonetic classes. When introducing detailed vowel identification the percentage of uniquely specified words rises to 83%. These results suggest that a fully detailed phonetic analysis of the speech signal is perhaps unnecessary. In the adopted word recognition model, the consonants are classified into four broad phonetic classes, while the vowels are described by their phonemic form. A set of 100 words uttered by several speakers has been used to test the performance of the implemented approach. In the implemented recognition model, three procedures have been developed, namely voiced-unvoiced-silence segmentation, vowel detection and identification, and automatic spectral transition detection between phonemes within a word. The accuracy of both the V-UV-S and vowel recognition procedures is almost perfect. A broad phonetic segmentation procedure has been implemented, which exploits information from the above mentioned three procedures. Simple phonological constraints have been used to improve the accuracy of the segmentation process. The resultant sequence of labels are used for lexical access to retrieve the word or a small set of words sharing the same broad phonetic labelling.     Generalized Hidden Filter Markov Models Applied to Speaker Recognition

    Classification of time series has wide Air Force, DoD and commercial interest, from automatic target recognition systems on munitions to recognition of speakers in diverse environments. The ability to effectively model the temporal information contained in a sequence is of paramount importance. Toward this goal, this research develops theoretical extensions to a class of stochastic models and demonstrates their effectiveness on the problem of text-independent (language constrained) speaker recognition. Specifically within the hidden Markov model architecture, additional constraints are implemented which better incorporate observation correlations and context, where standard approaches fail. Two methods of modeling correlations are developed, and their mathematical properties of convergence and reestimation are analyzed. These differ in modeling correlation present in the time samples and those present in the processed features, such as Mel frequency cepstral coefficients. The system models speaker dependent phonemes, making use of word dictionary grammars, and recognition is based on normalized log-likelihood Viterbi decoding. Both closed set identification and speaker verification using cohorts are performed on the YOHO database. YOHO is the only large scale, multiple-session, high-quality speech database for speaker authentication and contains over one hundred speakers stating combination locks. Equal error rates of 0.21% for males and 0.31% for females are demonstrated. A critical error analysis using a hypothesis test formulation provides the maximum number of errors observable while still meeting the goal error rates of 1% False Reject and 0.1% False Accept.     A detection-based pattern recognition framework and its applications

    The objective of this dissertation is to present a detection-based pattern recognition framework and demonstrate its applications in automatic speech recognition and broadcast news video story segmentation. Inspired by the studies of modern cognitive psychology and real-world pattern recognition systems, a detection-based pattern recognition framework is proposed to provide an alternative solution for some complicated pattern recognition problems. The primitive features are first detected and the task-specific knowledge hierarchy is constructed level by level; then a variety of heterogeneous information sources are combined together and the high-level context is incorporated as additional information at certain stages. A detection-based framework is a â divide-and-conquerâ design paradigm for pattern recognition problems, which will decompose a conceptually difficult problem into many elementary sub-problems that can be handled directly and reliably. Some information fusion strategies will be employed to integrate the evidence from a lower level to form the evidence at a higher level. Such a fusion procedure continues until reaching the top level. Generally, a detection-based framework has many advantages: (1) more flexibility in both detector design and fusion strategies, as these two parts can be optimized separately; (2) parallel and distributed computational components in primitive feature detection. In such a component-based framework, any primitive component can be replaced by a new one while other components remain unchanged; (3) incremental information integration; (4) high level context information as additional information sources, which can be combined with bottom-up processing at any stage. This dissertation presents the basic principles, criteria, and techniques for detector design and hypothesis verification based on the statistical detection and decision theory. In addition, evidence fusion strategies were investigated in this dissertation. Several novel detection algorithms and evidence fusion methods were proposed and their effectiveness was justified in automatic speech recognition and broadcast news video segmentation system.     Automatic Screening of Childhood Speech Sound Disorders and Detection of Associated Pronunciation Errors

    Speech disorders in children can affect their fluency and intelligibility. Delay in their diagnosis and treatment increases the risk of social impairment and learning disabilities. With the significant shortage of Speech and Language Pathologists (SLPs), there is an increasing interest in Computer-Aided Speech Therapy tools with automatic detection and diagnosis capability. However, the scarcity and unreliable annotation of disordered child speech corpora along with the high acoustic variations in the child speech data has impeded the development of reliable automatic detection and diagnosis of childhood speech sound disorders. Therefore, this thesis investigates two types of detection systems that can be achieved with minimum dependency on annotated mispronounced speech data. First, a novel approach that adopts paralinguistic features which represent the prosodic, spectral, and voice quality characteristics of the speech was proposed to perform segment- and subject-level classification of Typically Developing (TD) and Speech Sound Disordered (SSD) child speech using a binary Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. As paralinguistic features are both language- and content-independent, they can be extracted from an unannotated speech signal. Second, a novel Mispronunciation Detection and Diagnosis (MDD) approach was introduced to detect the pronunciation errors made due to SSDs and provide low-level diagnostic information that can be used in constructing formative feedback and a detailed diagnostic report. Unlike existing MDD methods where detection and diagnosis are performed at the phoneme level, the proposed method achieved MDD at the speech attribute level, namely the manners and places of articulations. The speech attribute features describe the involved articulators and their interactions when making a speech sound allowing a low-level description of the pronunciation error to be provided. Two novel methods to model speech attributes are further proposed in this thesis, a frame-based (phoneme-alignment) method leveraging the Multi-Task Learning (MTL) criterion and training a separate model for each attribute, and an alignment-free jointly-learnt method based on the Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) sequence to sequence criterion. The proposed techniques have been evaluated using standard and publicly accessible adult and child speech corpora, while the MDD method has been validated using L2 speech corpora

    Linguistically-motivated sub-word modeling with applications to speech recognition

One of theses issues is the new word or the out-of-vocabulary (OOV) problem, which occurs when the underlying automatic speech recognizer (ASR) encounters a word it does not "know". With ASR being deployed in constantly evolving domains such as restaurant ratings, or music querying, as well as on handheld devices, the new word problem continues to arise.This thesis is concerned with the OOV problem, and in particular with the process of modeling and learning the lexical properties of an OOV word through a linguistically-motivated sub-syllabic model. The linguistic model is designed using a context-free grammar which describes the sub-syllabic structure of English words, and encapsulates phonotactic and phonological constraints. The context-free grammar is supported by a probability model, which captures the statistics of the parses generated by the grammar and encodes spatio-temporal context. The two main outcomes of the grammar design are: (1) sub-word units, which encode pronunciation information, and can be viewed as clusters of phonemes; and (2) a high-quality alignment between graphemic and sub-word units, which results in hybrid entities denoted as spellnemes. The spellneme units are used in the design of a statistical bi-directional letter-to-sound (L2S) model, which plays a significant role in automatically learning the spelling and pronunciation of a new word.The sub-word units and the L2S model are assessed on the task of automatic lexicon generation. In a first set of experiments, knowledge of the spelling of the lexicon is assumed. It is shown that the phonemic pronunciations associated with the lexicon can be successfully learned using the L2S model as well as a sub-word recognizer.(cont.) In a second set of experiments, the assumption of perfect spelling knowledge is relaxed, and an iterative and unsupervised algorithm, denoted as Turbo-style, makes use of spoken instances of both spellings and words to learn the lexical entries in a dictionary.Sub-word speech recognition is also embedded in a parallel fashion as a backoff mechanism for a word recognizer. The resulting hybrid model is evaluated in a lexical access application, whereby a word recognizer first attempts to recognize an isolated word. Upon failure of the word recognizer, the sub-word recognizer is manually triggered. Preliminary results show that such a hybrid set-up outperforms a large-vocabulary recognizer.Finally, the sub-word units are embedded in a flat hybrid OOV model for continuous ASR. The hybrid ASR is deployed as a front-end to a song retrieval application, which is queried via spoken lyrics. Vocabulary compression and open-ended query recognition are achieved by designing a hybrid ASR. The performance of the frontend recognition system is reported in terms of sentence, word, and sub-word error rates. The hybrid ASR is shown to outperform a word-only system over a range of out-of-vocabulary rates (1%-50%). The retrieval performance is thoroughly assessed as a fmnction of ASR N-best size, language model order, and the index size. Moreover, it is shown that the sub-words outperform alternative linguistically-motivated sub-lexical units such as phonemes.     Studies in the Expertise Reversal Effect in Teaching Foreign Language Listening Skills

    The expertise reversal effect occurs when an instructional approach that is effective for novice learners is ineffective or even counterproductive for more expert learners. This study reports a series of four experiments which were designed and conducted to explore the expertise reversal effect in the field of foreign language listening teaching and learning. Three instructional formats (read-only, listen-only, and read-and-listen) were designed to teach native Chinese students English (Experiments 1-3) or French (Experiment 4) listening skills. Experiment 1 found a significant interaction with no effect for learners with lower levels of listening expertise but a significant effect for learners with higher levels of listening expertise favouring the read-only approach. The results of Experiment 2 replicated the counterintuitive findings of Experiment 1. Experiment 3 testing less knowledgeable students than Experiments 1 and 2 indicated that the read-and-listen condition was more effective for novice learners. Experiment 4 testing beginner-level learners of French as a foreign language obtained results consistent with those of Experiment 3 in that lower expertise learners gained greater benefits from the read-and-listen than the read-only or listen-only teaching approaches. It is concluded from the four experiments that the read-and-listen approach was advantageous for novice learners in learning foreign language listening skills but more expert learners could gain more benefits from the read-only approach

    An examination of growth in vocabulary and phonological awareness in early childhood: an individual growth model approach

    Thesis (Ed.D.)--Boston UniversityThe present study used individual growth modeling to examine the role of specific forms (i.e., receptive, expressive, and definitional vocabulary and grammatical skill) and levels of oral vocabulary skill (i.e., 25th, 50th, or 75th percentile) in phonological awareness growth during the preschool and kindergarten years. Sixty-one, typically-developing, 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds, all from middle- to upper-income families, participated in the year-long study. A comprehensive battery of standardized and unstandardized measures was used to assess phonological awareness, oral vocabulary (i.e., receptive, expressive, and definitional) and grammatical skill at baseline, and at 3, 6, and 9 months later. Receptive vocabulary was the strongest predictor of growth in phonological awareness for the sample as a whole, followed by expressive vocabulary and grammatical skill, respectively. In the full model, definitional level vocabulary did not make a significant contribution to growth in phonological awareness. Receptive vocabulary accounted for additional phonological awareness growth in the 3-year-olds, but not in 4- and 5-year-olds, while expressive vocabulary accounted for additional phonological awareness growth in 4- and 5-year-olds, but not in 3-year-olds. Post hoc analyses were conducted to explore the change in relations between phonological awareness and receptive and expressive vocabulary that was identified by the individual growth models. The post hoc results suggested that higher levels of expressive vocabulary (i.e., higher scores on the measures) are likely required to complete phonological awareness tasks with the most difficult operations and highest task demands, even if the linguistic unit involved is large. The theory of lexical reorganization attributes the origin and protracted development of phonological awareness to increases in vocabulary size (Metsala & Walley, 1998). The present study's results suggest that increases in vocabulary size might be necessary, but not sufficient, as a foundation for phonological awareness development. Expressive level vocabulary might also be needed to hold words in memory to perform complex manipulations required in higher level phonological awareness tasks
