PifPaf: Composite Fields for Human Pose Estimation
We propose a new bottom-up method for multi-person 2D human pose estimation
that is particularly well suited for urban mobility such as self-driving cars
and delivery robots. The new method, PifPaf, uses a Part Intensity Field (PIF)
to localize body parts and a Part Association Field (PAF) to associate body
parts with each other to form full human poses. Our method outperforms previous
methods at low resolution and in crowded, cluttered and occluded scenes thanks
to (i) our new composite field PAF encoding fine-grained information and (ii)
the choice of Laplace loss for regressions which incorporates a notion of
uncertainty. Our architecture is based on a fully convolutional, single-shot,
box-free design. We perform on par with the existing state-of-the-art bottom-up
method on the standard COCO keypoint task and produce state-of-the-art results
on a modified COCO keypoint task for the transportation domain.Comment: CVPR 201
Expanded Parts Model for Semantic Description of Humans in Still Images
We introduce an Expanded Parts Model (EPM) for recognizing human attributes
(e.g. young, short hair, wearing suit) and actions (e.g. running, jumping) in
still images. An EPM is a collection of part templates which are learnt
discriminatively to explain specific scale-space regions in the images (in
human centric coordinates). This is in contrast to current models which consist
of a relatively few (i.e. a mixture of) 'average' templates. EPM uses only a
subset of the parts to score an image and scores the image sparsely in space,
i.e. it ignores redundant and random background in an image. To learn our
model, we propose an algorithm which automatically mines parts and learns
corresponding discriminative templates together with their respective locations
from a large number of candidate parts. We validate our method on three recent
challenging datasets of human attributes and actions. We obtain convincing

VNect: Real-time 3D Human Pose Estimation with a Single RGB Camera
We present the first real-time method to capture the full global 3D skeletal
pose of a human in a stable, temporally consistent manner using a single RGB
camera. Our method combines a new convolutional neural network (CNN) based pose
regressor with kinematic skeleton fitting. Our novel fully-convolutional pose
formulation regresses 2D and 3D joint positions jointly in real time and does
not require tightly cropped input frames. A real-time kinematic skeleton
fitting method uses the CNN output to yield temporally stable 3D global pose
reconstructions on the basis of a coherent kinematic skeleton. This makes our
approach the first monocular RGB method usable in real-time applications such
as 3D character control---thus far, the only monocular methods for such
applications employed specialized RGB-D cameras. Our method's accuracy is
quantitatively on par with the best offline 3D monocular RGB pose estimation
methods. Our results are qualitatively comparable to, and sometimes better
than, results from monocular RGB-D approaches, such as the Kinect. However, we
show that our approach is more broadly applicable than RGB-D solutions, i.e. it
works for outdoor scenes, community videos, and low quality commodity RGB
