    Modeling Tool of TRILL Protocol

    Get PDF
This paper proposes the first modeling tool of TRILL protocol. The application implements TRILL features, which include the most fundamental concepts of IS-IS protocol. Simplified STP protocol is also implemented. The application can be used to didactically and interactively present the advantages of the TRILL protocol over STP. Alternatively, the tool can be utilized as a decision tool for TRILL deployment in enterprise networks. The functionality of the TRILL protocol is discussed with emphasis on the main differences between STP. The application was tested on five scenarios of TRILL deployment in a typical enterprise network. Data traffic of these different deployments was compared using the application. Finally, results are further discussed

MPTCP Robustness Against Large-Scale Man-in-the-Middle Attacks

International audienceMultipath communications at the Internet scale have been a myth for a long time, with no actual protocol being deployed at large scale. Recently, the Multipath Transmission Control Protocol (MPTCP) extension was standardized and is undergoing rapid adoption in many different use-cases, from mobile to fixed access networks, from data-centers to core networks. Among its major benefits-i.e., reliability thanks to backup path rerouting, through-put increase thanks to link aggregation, and confidentiality being more difficult to intercept a full connection-the latter has attracted lower attention. How effective would be to use MPTCP, or an equivalent multipath transport layer protocol, to exploit multiple Internet-scale paths and decrease the probability of Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks is a question which we try to answer. By analyzing the Autonomous System (AS) level graph, we identify which countries and regions show a higher level of robustness against MITM AS-level attacks, for example due to core cable tapping or route hijacking practices.

Software-Defined Networks for Future Networks and Services: Main Technical Challenges and Business Implications

In 2013, the IEEE Future Directions Committee (FDC) formed an SDN work group to explore the amount of interest in forming an IEEE Software-Defined Network (SDN) Community. To this end, a Workshop on "SDN for Future Networks and Services" (SDN4FNS'13) was organized in Trento, Italy (Nov. 11th-13th 2013). Following the results of the workshop, in this paper, we have further analyzed scenarios, prior-art, state of standardization, and further discussed the main technical challenges and socio-economic aspects of SDN and virtualization in future networks and services. A number of research and development directions have been identified in this white paper, along with a comprehensive analysis of the technical feasibility and business availability of those fundamental technologies. A radical industry transition towards the "economy of information through softwarization" is expected in the near future

Boosting cloud communications through a crosslayer multipath protocol architecture

    No full text
International audienceExternal reliability in data-center networking is today commonly reached via forms of provider multihoming, so as to guarantee higher service availability rates. In parallel, Cloud users also resort to multihoming via different device access interfaces (Wi-fi, 3G, Wired). Both practices add path diversity between Cloud users and servers, unusable with legacy communication protocols. To overcome this void, we present a holistic multipath communication architecture for Cloud access and inter-Cloud communications, and defend its possible implementation using three promising recent protocols functionally acting at three different communication layers: MPTCP, LISP and TRILL
