    Body-relative navigation guidance using uncalibrated cameras

In a variety of situations, people do not have the time, the opportunity or the capability to learn the layout of the environment before visiting an area. Examples include soldiers in the field entering an unknown building, firefighters responding to an emergency, or a visually impaired person walking through the city. In absence of external source of localization (such as GPS), the system must rely on internal sensing to provide navigation guidance to the user. In order to address real-world situations, the method must provide spatially extended, temporally consistent navigation guidance, through cluttered and dynamic environments. While recent research has largely focused on metric methods based on calibrated cameras, the work presented in this thesis demonstrates a novel approach to navigation using uncalibrated cameras. During the first visit of the environment, the method builds a topological representation of the user's exploration path, which we refer to as the place graph. The method then provides navigation guidance from any place to any other in the explored environment. On one hand, a localization algorithm determines the location of the user in the graph. On the other hand, a rotation guidance algorithm provides a directional cue towards the next graph node in the user's body frame. Our method makes little assumption about the environment except that it contains descriptive visual features. It requires no intrinsic or extrinsic camera calibration, and relies instead on a method that learns the correlation between user rotation and feature correspondence across cameras. We validate our approach using several ground truth datasets. In addition, we show that our approach is capable of guiding a robot equipped with a local obstacle avoidance capability through real, cluttered environments.     Visual guidance of unmanned aerial manipulators

    The ability to fly has greatly expanded the possibilities for robots to perform surveillance, inspection or map generation tasks. Yet it was only in recent years that research in aerial robotics was mature enough to allow active interactions with the environment. The robots responsible for these interactions are called aerial manipulators and usually combine a multirotor platform and one or more robotic arms. The main objective of this thesis is to formalize the concept of aerial manipulator and present guidance methods, using visual information, to provide them with autonomous functionalities. A key competence to control an aerial manipulator is the ability to localize it in the environment. Traditionally, this localization has required external infrastructure of sensors (e.g., GPS or IR cameras), restricting the real applications. Furthermore, localization methods with on-board sensors, exported from other robotics fields such as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), require large computational units becoming a handicap in vehicles where size, load, and power consumption are important restrictions. In this regard, this thesis proposes a method to estimate the state of the vehicle (i.e., position, orientation, velocity and acceleration) by means of on-board, low-cost, light-weight and high-rate sensors. With the physical complexity of these robots, it is required to use advanced control techniques during navigation. Thanks to their redundancy on degrees-of-freedom, they offer the possibility to accomplish not only with mobility requirements but with other tasks simultaneously and hierarchically, prioritizing them depending on their impact to the overall mission success. In this work we present such control laws and define a number of these tasks to drive the vehicle using visual information, guarantee the robot integrity during flight, and improve the platform stability or increase arm operability. The main contributions of this research work are threefold: (1) Present a localization technique to allow autonomous navigation, this method is specifically designed for aerial platforms with size, load and computational burden restrictions. (2) Obtain control commands to drive the vehicle using visual information (visual servo). (3) Integrate the visual servo commands into a hierarchical control law by exploiting the redundancy of the robot to accomplish secondary tasks during flight. These tasks are specific for aerial manipulators and they are also provided. All the techniques presented in this document have been validated throughout extensive experimentation with real robotic platforms.La capacitat de volar ha incrementat molt les possibilitats dels robots per a realitzar tasques de vigilància, inspecció o generació de mapes. Tot i això, no és fins fa pocs anys que la recerca en robòtica aèria ha estat prou madura com per començar a permetre interaccions amb l’entorn d’una manera activa. Els robots per a fer-ho s’anomenen manipuladors aeris i habitualment combinen una plataforma multirotor i un braç robòtic. L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi és formalitzar el concepte de manipulador aeri i presentar mètodes de guiatge, utilitzant informació visual, per dotar d’autonomia aquest tipus de vehicles. Una competència clau per controlar un manipulador aeri és la capacitat de localitzar-se en l’entorn. Tradicionalment aquesta localització ha requerit d’infraestructura sensorial externa (GPS, càmeres IR, etc.), limitant així les aplicacions reals. Pel contrari, sistemes de localització exportats d’altres camps de la robòtica basats en sensors a bord, com per exemple mètodes de localització i mapejat simultànis (SLAM), requereixen de gran capacitat de còmput, característica que penalitza molt en vehicles on la mida, pes i consum elèctric son grans restriccions. En aquest sentit, aquesta tesi proposa un mètode d’estimació d’estat del robot (posició, velocitat, orientació i acceleració) a partir de sensors instal·lats a bord, de baix cost, baix consum computacional i que proporcionen mesures a alta freqüència. Degut a la complexitat física d’aquests robots, és necessari l’ús de tècniques de control avançades. Gràcies a la seva redundància de graus de llibertat, aquests robots ens ofereixen la possibilitat de complir amb els requeriments de mobilitat i, simultàniament, realitzar tasques de manera jeràrquica, ordenant-les segons l’impacte en l’acompliment de la missió. En aquest treball es presenten aquestes lleis de control, juntament amb la descripció de tasques per tal de guiar visualment el vehicle, garantir la integritat del robot durant el vol, millorar de l’estabilitat del vehicle o augmentar la manipulabilitat del braç. Aquesta tesi es centra en tres aspectes fonamentals: (1) Presentar una tècnica de localització per dotar d’autonomia el robot. Aquest mètode està especialment dissenyat per a plataformes amb restriccions de capacitat computacional, mida i pes. (2) Obtenir les comandes de control necessàries per guiar el vehicle a partir d’informació visual. (3) Integrar aquestes accions dins una estructura de control jeràrquica utilitzant la redundància del robot per complir altres tasques durant el vol.     Toward Automated Aerial Refueling: Relative Navigation with Structure from Motion

    The USAF\u27s use of UAS has expanded from reconnaissance to hunter/killer missions. As the UAS mission further expands into aerial combat, better performance and larger payloads will have a negative correlation with range and loiter times. Additionally, the Air Force Future Operating Concept calls for \formations of uninhabited refueling aircraft...[that] enable refueling operations partway inside threat areas. However, a lack of accurate relative positioning information prevents the ability to safely maintain close formation flight and contact between a tanker and a UAS. The inclusion of cutting edge vision systems on present refueling platforms may provide the information necessary to support a AAR mission by estimating the position of a trailing aircraft to provide inputs to a UAS controller capable of maintaining a given position. This research examines the ability of SfM to generate relative navigation information. Previous AAR research efforts involved the use of differential GPS, LiDAR, and vision systems. This research aims to leverage current and future imaging technology to compliment these solutions. The algorithm used in this thesis generates a point cloud by determining 3D structure from a sequence of 2D images. The algorithm then utilizes PCA to register the point cloud to a reference model. The algorithm was tested in a real world environment using a 1:7 scale F-15 model. Additionally, this thesis studies common 3D rigid registration algorithms in an effort characterize their performance in the AAR domain.     What can be done with an embedded stereo-rig in urban environments?

    International audienceThe development of the Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs) with urban applications are now possible due to the recent solutions (DARPA Grand Challenge) developed to solve the Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) problem: perception, path planning and control. For the last decade, the introduction of GPS systems and vision have been allowed the transposition of SLAM methods dedicated to indoor environments to outdoor ones. When the GPS data are unavailable, the current position of the mobile robot can be estimated by the fusion of data from odometer and/or Inertial Navigation System (INS). We detail in this article what can be done with an uncalibrated stereo-rig, when it is embedded in a vehicle which is going through urban roads. The methodology is based on features extracted on planes: we mainly assume the road at the foreground as the plane common to all the urban scenes but other planes like vertical frontages of buildings can be used if the features extracted on the road are not enough relevant. The relative motions of the coplanar features tracked with both cameras allow us to stimate the vehicle ego-motion with a high precision. Futhermore, the features which don't check the relative motion of the considered plane can be assumed as obstacles

    Development of a low-cost multi-camera star tracker for small satellites

    This thesis presents a novel small satellite star tracker that uses an array of low-cost, off the shelf imaging sensors to achieve high accuracy attitude determination performance. The theoretical analysis of improvements in star detectability achieved by stacking images from multiple cameras is presented. An image processing algorithm is developed to combine images from multiple cameras with arbitrary focal lengths, principal point offsets, distortions, and misalignments. The star tracker also implements other algorithms including the region growing algorithm, the intensity weighted centroid algorithm, the geometric voting algorithm for star identification, and the singular value decomposition algorithm for attitude determination. A star tracker software simulator is used to test the algorithms by generating star images with sensor noises, lens defocusing, and lens distortion. A hardware prototype is being assembled for eventual night sky testing to verify simulated performance levels. Star tracker flight hardware is being developed in the Laboratory for Advanced Space Systems at Illinois (LASSI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign for future CubeSat missions

    Guidance, Navigation and Control of a Fly-By-Wire Transport Category Airship Designed for Hover Cargo Delivery

    The purpose of this thesis is to develop fly-by-wire pilot controls for a transport category airship propelled with six thrust vectoring engines, and to develop control laws to maintain position, heading, and attitude during hover and cargo operations. Owing to the large body area, most airships require that they be pointed into the wind to maintain their position. This research aims at controlling an airship attitude and position during hover cargo delivery, irrespective of the wind direction. Control laws were developed for two primary modes of the airship: Flight (High Speed Mode) and Hover (Cargo Delivery Mode). Different sets of pilot controls were developed for each mode, oriented towards reduced pilot work load and simplicity of operation. A proof of concept sub-scale model of the airship was built and flown in an indoor hangar environment. An Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) system was implemented using Inertial Measuring Unit (IMU) and a Magnetometer. Indoor positioning of the airship was achieved using target LEDs, and applying robotic vision techniques such as motion detection, color blob analysis, and stereo vision. The developed control laws were tested during indoor flight tests, and conclusions were drawn regarding their feasibility

    Depth map from the combination of matched points with active contours

    IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IVS), 2000, Dearborn (EE.UU.)This paper describes the analysis of an active contour fitted to a target in a sequence of images recorded by a freely moving uncalibrated camera. The motivating application is the visual guidance of a robot towards a target. Contour deformations are analysed to extract the scaled depth of the target, and to explore the feasibility of 3D egomotion recovery. The scaled depth is used to compute the time to contact, which provides a measure of distance to the target, and also to improve the common depth maps obtained from point matches, which are a valuable input for the robot to avoid obstacles.This work was supported by the project 'Navegación basada en visión de robots autónomos en entornos no estructurados.'
