CaloriNet: From silhouettes to calorie estimation in private environments
We propose a novel deep fusion architecture, CaloriNet, for the online
estimation of energy expenditure for free living monitoring in private
environments, where RGB data is discarded and replaced by silhouettes. Our
fused convolutional neural network architecture is trainable end-to-end, to
estimate calorie expenditure, using temporal foreground silhouettes alongside
accelerometer data. The network is trained and cross-validated on a publicly
available dataset, SPHERE_RGBD + Inertial_calorie. Results show
state-of-the-art minimum error on the estimation of energy expenditure
(calories per minute), outperforming alternative, standard and single-modal
techniques.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
Frequency based Classification of Activities using Accelerometer Data
This work presents, the classification of user activities such as Rest, Walk
and Run, on the basis of frequency component present in the acceleration data
in a wireless sensor network environment. As the frequencies of the above
mentioned activities differ slightly for different person, so it gives a more
accurate result. The algorithm uses just one parameter i.e. the frequency of
the body acceleration data of the three axes for classifying the activities in
a set of data. The algorithm includes a normalization step and hence there is
no need to set a different value of threshold value for magnitude for different
test person. The classification is automatic and done on a block by block
basis.Comment: IEEE International Conference on Multisensor Fusion and Integration

Real-time human ambulation, activity, and physiological monitoring:taxonomy of issues, techniques, applications, challenges and limitations
Automated methods of real-time, unobtrusive, human ambulation, activity, and wellness monitoring and data analysis using various algorithmic techniques have been subjects of intense research. The general aim is to devise effective means of addressing the demands of assisted living, rehabilitation, and clinical observation and assessment through sensor-based monitoring. The research studies have resulted in a large amount of literature. This paper presents a holistic articulation of the research studies and offers comprehensive insights along four main axes: distribution of existing studies; monitoring device framework and sensor types; data collection, processing and analysis; and applications, limitations and challenges. The aim is to present a systematic and most complete study of literature in the area in order to identify research gaps and prioritize future research directions
Affective Medicine: a review of Affective Computing efforts in Medical Informatics
Background: Affective computing (AC) is concerned with emotional interactions performed with and through computers. It is defined as “computing that relates to, arises from, or deliberately influences emotions”. AC enables investigation and understanding of the relation between human emotions and health as well as application of assistive and useful technologies in the medical domain. Objectives: 1) To review the general state of the art in AC and its applications in medicine, and 2) to establish synergies between the research communities of AC and medical informatics. Methods: Aspects related to the human affective state as a determinant of the human health are discussed, coupled with an illustration of significant AC research and related literature output. Moreover, affective communication channels are described and their range of application fields is explored through illustrative examples. Results: The presented conferences, European research projects and research publications illustrate the recent increase of interest in the AC area by the medical community. Tele-home healthcare, AmI, ubiquitous monitoring, e-learning and virtual communities with emotionally expressive characters for elderly or impaired people are few areas where the potential of AC has been realized and applications have emerged. Conclusions: A number of gaps can potentially be overcome through the synergy of AC and medical informatics. The application of AC technologies parallels the advancement of the existing state of the art and the introduction of new methods. The amount of work and projects reviewed in this paper witness an ambitious and optimistic synergetic future of the affective medicine field
Central monitoring system for ambient assisted living
Smart homes for aged care enable the elderly to stay in their own homes longer. By means of various types of ambient and wearable sensors information is gathered on people living in smart homes for aged care. This information is then processed to determine the activities of daily living (ADL) and provide vital information to carers. Many examples of smart homes for aged care can be found in literature, however, little or no evidence can be found with respect to interoperability of various sensors and devices along with associated functions. One key element with respect to interoperability is the central monitoring system in a smart home. This thesis analyses and presents key functions and requirements of a central monitoring system. The outcomes of this thesis may benefit developers of smart homes for aged care
An Advanced Home ElderCare Service
With the increase of welfare cost all over the developed world, there is a need to resort to new technologies
that could help reduce this enormous cost and provide some quality eldercare services. This paper presents a
middleware-level solution that integrates monitoring and emergency detection solutions with networking solutions. The proposed system enables efficient integration between a variety of sensors and actuators deployed
at home for emergency detection and provides a framework for creating and managing rescue teams willing
to assist elders in case of emergency situations. A prototype of the proposed system was designed and implemented. Results were obtained from both computer simulations and a real-network testbed. These results show that the proposed system can help overcome some of the current problems and help reduce the enormous cost of eldercare service
