AmIE: An Ambient Intelligent Environment for Assisted Living
In the modern world of technology Internet-of-things (IoT) systems strives to
provide an extensive interconnected and automated solutions for almost every
life aspect. This paper proposes an IoT context-aware system to present an
Ambient Intelligence (AmI) environment; such as an apartment, house, or a
building; to assist blind, visually-impaired, and elderly people. The proposed
system aims at providing an easy-to-utilize voice-controlled system to locate,
navigate and assist users indoors. The main purpose of the system is to provide
indoor positioning, assisted navigation, outside weather information, room
temperature, people availability, phone calls and emergency evacuation when
needed. The system enhances the user's awareness of the surrounding environment
by feeding them with relevant information through a wearable device to assist
them. In addition, the system is voice-controlled in both English and Arabic
languages and the information are displayed as audio messages in both
languages. The system design, implementation, and evaluation consider the
constraints in common types of premises in Kuwait and in challenges, such as
the training needed by the users. This paper presents cost-effective
implementation options by the adoption of a Raspberry Pi microcomputer,
Bluetooth Low Energy devices and an Android smart watch.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl
On Mobile Bluetooth Tags
This paper presents a new approach for hyper-local data sharing and delivery
on the base of discoverable Bluetooth nodes. Our approach allows customers to
associate user-defined data with network nodes and use a special mobile
application (context-aware browser) for presenting this information to mobile
users in proximity. Alternatively, mobile services can request and share local
data in M2M applications rely on network proximity. Bluetooth nodes in cars are
among the best candidates for the role of the bearing nodes.Comment: submitted to FRUCT-17 conference (http://fruct.org
Externalising moods and psychological states in a cloud based system to enhance a pet-robot and child’s interaction
Background:This PATRICIA research project is about using pet robots to reduce pain
and anxiety in hospitalized children. The study began 2 years ago and it is believed that
the advances made in this project are significant. Patients, parents, nurses, psycholo-
gists, and engineers have adopted the Pleo robot, a baby dinosaur robotic pet, which
works in different ways to assist children during hospitalization.
Methods: Focus is spent on creating a wireless communication system with the Pleo
in order to help the coordinator, who conducts therapy with the child, monitor, under-
stand, and control Pleo’s behavior at any moment. This article reports how this techno-
logical function is being developed and tested.
Results: Wireless communication between the Pleo and an Android device is
achieved. The developed Android app allows the user to obtain any state of the robot
without stopping its interaction with the patient. Moreover, information is sent to a
cloud, so that robot moods, states and interactions can be shared among different
robots.
Conclusions: Pleo attachment was successful for more than 1 month, working with
children in therapy, which makes the investment capable of positive therapeutic
possibilities. This technical improvement in the Pleo addresses two key issues in social
robotics: needing an enhanced response to maintain the attention and engagement of
the child, and using the system as a platform to collect the states of the child’s progress
for clinical purposes.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

RFID - based Interactive Log Bag for Poor Memory Prevention
People are sometimes forgotten about what they should do or what they need to bring. Poor memory problem that happened in people less than 40 years old is due to their attitudes that like to ignore things and carelessness. An Interactive Log Bag has been developed using Arduino Mega 2560 with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system to help people overcome the poor memory problem of bringing or keeping essential items in a bag before travelling or going to work. The bag will react to the user RFID-tagged objects for the items logging purpose. The logging items will be saved in the SD card and can be shown in Messenger Bag Android Application. An alert system by using strip RGB Light Emitting Diode (LED) will remind the users of the forgotten items. In addition, the list of items that are left behind or carried in the bag can be checked through an android application. This project will give an opportunity to the users to have a better life by overcoming one of the daily routine problems pertaining to the forgetfulness problem
Design and Construction of a Wireless Based Electrical Appliance Control System
The wireless based electrical appliance control system puts forth a system which enables users to control home appliances using mobile phone or computer with the aid of an application device, The design makes use of an efficient and low-cost technology for controlling the appliances thus minimizing the power wastage. The interface of the mobile application is used to send signals to another device connected to an 8052 microcontroller programmed to interpret the signal from the phone and control electrical loads via relays switched with transistors, the complete system operates on a 5 volts power supply which is obtained from the public mains. The design is built for the sole purpose of efficient control of electrical appliances, part of its objectives is to embed a user friendly control interface for electrical device using internet device, and it is a fast and efficient approach to control electrical appliances. The design is a viable one in the sense that it will go a long way in helping to checkmate unnecessary wastage of voltage and making it more convenient to control electrical appliances from even a remote area. Keywords: Wireless based electrical appliance control system, Microcontroller, Mobile Application, Electrical Appliance
Fun weight
Treball desenvolupat dins el marc del programa 'European Project Semester' i l'"International Design Project Semester".The main objective of the Fun Weight project was to decrease the level of anxiety from children during preoperative treatment, while the gathering of measurements essential for further hospitalization takes place. This assignment has been conducted by an international and multidisciplinary team whose members were from fields of: Product Design, Electronics and Information Communication Technologies, Mechanical Engineering and Information Technology. The project was interesting and constructive due to tight cooperation with the Hospital de Sant Joan de Deu in Barcelona which was the main stakeholder of this project.
Methodology of the project consisted of in advance strictly defined steps, which were: researching, designing of the interactive game, designing/development of the application, prototyping of the application, prototyping of the interactive game and testing. However the development of the interactive game and the application have been performed simultaneously.
The outcome of this project has reached its end at the 17th of June and concluded following three elements: electronical prototype of the interactive game, three dimensional model of the game and the mobile application for retrieving measurements and communicating with the interactive game.
The stage of testing was divided into three independent sections: testing of the application usability, testing of the application functionality and evaluation of actual anxiety decreasing. As a result of application usability test, an average rate of ease of the interface has been obtained at the level of 2 what states for easy to use. Functionality tests have been performed with application of the Angel Sensor in function of the measuring device. In spite of problems encountered during the use of that sensor, basic functionalities of the application have been confirmed. Due to the shortage of the time, evaluation of decrease of anxiety level has not yet been conducted
Ubiquitous Smart Home System Using Android Application
This paper presents a flexible standalone, low-cost smart home system, which
is based on the Android app communicating with the micro-web server providing
more than the switching functionalities. The Arduino Ethernet is used to
eliminate the use of a personal computer (PC) keeping the cost of the overall
system to a minimum while voice activation is incorporated for switching
functionalities. Devices such as light switches, power plugs, temperature
sensors, humidity sensors, current sensors, intrusion detection sensors,
smoke/gas sensors and sirens have been integrated in the system to demonstrate
the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed smart home system. The smart
home app is tested and it is able to successfully perform the smart home
operations such as switching functionalities, automatic environmental control
and intrusion detection, in the later case where an email is generated and the
siren goes on.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
A Platform for the Analysis of Qualitative and Quantitative Data about the Built Environment and its Users
There are many scenarios in which it is necessary to collect data from multiple sources in order to evaluate a system, including the collection of both quantitative data - from sensors and smart devices - and qualitative data - such as observations and interview results. However, there are currently very few systems that enable both of these data types to be combined in such a way that they can be analysed side-by-side.
This paper describes an end-to-end system for the collection, analysis, storage and visualisation of qualitative and quantitative data, developed using the e-Science Central cloud analytics platform. We describe the experience of developing the system, based on a case study that involved collecting data about the built environment and its users. In this case study, data is collected from older adults living in residential care. Sensors were placed throughout the care home and smart devices were issued to the residents. This sensor data is uploaded to the analytics platform and the processed results are stored in a data warehouse, where it is integrated with qualitative data collected by healthcare and architecture researchers. Visualisations are also presented which were intended to allow the data to be explored and for potential correlations between the quantitative and qualitative data to be investigated
