    A study of teletraffic problems in multicast networks

    This dissertation studies teletraffic engineering of dynamic multicast connections. The traditional models in teletraffic engineering do not handle multicast connections properly, since in a dynamic multicast tree, users may join and leave the connection freely, and thus the multicast tree evolves in time. A model called multicast loss system is used to calculate blocking probabilities in a single link and in tree-type networks. In a single link case, the problem is a generalised Engset problem, and a method for calculating call blocking probabilities for users is presented. Application of the reduced load approximation for multicast connections is studied. Blocking probabilities in a cellular system are studied by means of simulation. The analysis is mainly concentrated on tree type networks, where convolution-truncation algorithms and simulation methods for solving the blocking probabilities exactly are derived. Both single layer and hierarchically coded streams are treated. The presented algorithms reduce significantly the computational complexity of the problem, compared to direct calculation from the system state space. An approximative method is given for background traffic. The simulation method presented is an application of the Inverse Convolution Monte-Carlo method, and it gives a considerable variance reduction, and thus allows simulation with smaller sample sizes than with traditional simulation methods. Signalling load for dynamic multicast connections in a node depends on the shape of the tree as well as the location of the node in the tree.     On the utility of network coding in dynamic environments

    Many wireless applications, such as ad-hoc networks and sensor networks, require decentralized operation in dynamically varying environments. We consider a distributed randomized network coding approach that enables efficient decentralized operation of multi-source multicast networks. We show that this approach provides substantial benefits over traditional routing methods in dynamically varying environments. We present a set of empirical trials measuring the performance of network coding versus an approximate online Steiner tree routing approach when connections vary dynamically. The results show that network coding achieves superior performance in a significant fraction of our randomly generated network examples. Such dynamic settings represent a substantially broader class of networking problems than previously recognized for which network coding shows promise of significant practical benefits compared to routing

On-board switching/processing satellites potentially provide these features, allowing flexible interconnection among multiple spot beams, direct to the user communications services using very small aperture terminals (VSAT's), independent uplink and downlink access/transmission system designs optimized to user's traffic requirements, efficient TDM downlink transmission, and better link performance. A flexible switching system on the satellite in conjunction with low-cost user terminals will likely benefit future satellite network users

    Analysis and implementation of the Large Scale Video-on-Demand System

    Next Generation Network (NGN) provides multimedia services over broadband based networks, which supports high definition TV (HDTV), and DVD quality video-on-demand content. The video services are thus seen as merging mainly three areas such as computing, communication, and broadcasting. It has numerous advantages and more exploration for the large-scale deployment of video-on-demand system is still needed. This is due to its economic and design constraints. It's need significant initial investments for full service provision. This paper presents different estimation for the different topologies and it require efficient planning for a VOD system network. The methodology investigates the network bandwidth requirements of a VOD system based on centralized servers, and distributed local proxies. Network traffic models are developed to evaluate the VOD system's operational bandwidth requirements for these two network architectures.     TCPSnitch: Dissecting the Usage of the Socket API

    Networked applications interact with the TCP/IP stack through the socket API. Over the years, various extensions have been added to this popular API. In this paper, we propose and implement the TCPSnitch software that tracks the interactions between Linux and Android applications and the TCP/IP stack. We collect a dataset containing the interactions produced by more than 120 different applications. Our analysis reveals that applications use a variety of API calls. On Android, many applications use various socket options even if the Java API does not expose them directly.     A Switch Architecture for Real-Time Multimedia Communications

    In this paper we present a switch that can be used to transfer multimedia type of trafJic. The switch provides a guaranteed throughput and a bounded latency. We focus on the design of a prototype Switching Element using the new technology opportunities being offered today. The architecture meets the multimedia requirements but still has a low complexity and needs a minimum amount of hardware. A main item of this paper will be the background of the architectural design decisions made. These include the interconnection topology, buffer organization, routing and scheduling. The implementation of the switching fabric with FPGAs, allows us to experiment with switching mode, routing strategy and scheduling policy in a multimedia environment. The witching elements are interconnected in a Kautz topology. Kautz graphs have interesting properties such as: a small diametec the degree is independent of the network size, the network is fault-tolerant and has a simple routing algorithm
