Machine Learning Approaches for Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) Signaling Detection
There will be a significant demand on having a fast and reliable wireless communication systems in future. Since bandwidth and bit rate are tightly connected to each other, one approach will be increasing the bandwidth. However, the number of wireless devices are growing exponentially, and we don't have infinite bandwidth to allocate. On the other hand, increasing the bit rate for a given bandwidth, i.e., improving the spectral efficiency (SE), is another promising approach to have a fast and reliable wireless communication systems. Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) is one of the candidates to improve the SE while this improvement comes at the expense of complexity of removing the introduced inter-symbol interference (ISI). In this thesis, we propose two algorithms to decrease the computational complexity regarding removing the ISI in FTN signaling.
In the first main contribution of the thesis, we introduce an equivalent FTN signaling model based on orthonormal basis pulses to transform the non-orthogonal FTN signaling transmission to an orthogonal transmission carrying real-number constellations. Then we propose a deep learning (DL) based algorithm to decrease the computational complexity of the known list sphere decoding (LSD) algorithm. In essence, the LSD is one of the algorithm that can be used for the detection process of the FTN signaling; however, at huge computational complexity. Simulation results show the proposed DL-based LSD reduces computational complexity by orders of magnitude while maintaining close-to-optimal performance.
In the second main contribution of the thesis, we view the FTN signaling detection problem as a classification problem, where the received FTN signaling signal viewed as an unlabeled class sample that is an element of a set of all potential classes samples. Assuming receiving samples, conventional detectors search over an -dimensional space which is computationally expensive especially for large value of . However, we propose a low-complexity classifier (LCC) that performs the classification in dimensional space where . The proposed LCC's ability to balance performance and complexity is demonstrated by simulation results
Power-efficient modulation formats in coherent transmission systems
Coherent optical transmission systems have a four-dimensional (4-D) signal space (two quadratures in two polarizations). These four dimensions can be used to create modulation formats that have a better power efficiency (higher sensitivity) than the conventional binary phase shift keying/quadrature phase shift keying (BPSK/QPSK) signals. Several examples are given, with some emphasis on a 24-level format and an 8-level format, including descriptions of how they can be realized and expressions for their symbol and bit error probabilities. These formats are, respectively, an extension and a subset of the commonly used 16-level dual-polarization QPSK format. Sphere packing simulations in 2, 3, and 4 dimensions, up to 32 levels, are used to verify their optimality. The numerical results, as the number of levels increases, are shown to agree with lattice-theoretical results. Finally, we point out that the use of these constellations will lead to improved fundamental sensitivity limits for optical communication systems, and they may also be relevant as a way of reducing power demands and/or nonlinear influence. \ua9 2009, IEEE. Non-Orthogonal Signal and System Design for Wireless Communications
The thesis presents research in non-orthogonal multi-carrier signals, in which: (i) a new signal format termed truncated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TOFDM) is proposed to improve data rates in wireless communication systems, such as those used in mobile/cellular systems and wireless local area networks (LANs), and (ii) a new design and experimental implementation of a real-time spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) system are reported. This research proposes a modified version of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) format, obtained by truncating OFDM symbols in the time-domain. In TOFDM, subcarriers are no longer orthogonally packed in the frequency-domain as time samples are only partially transmitted, leading to improved spectral efficiency. In this work, (i) analytical expressions are derived for the newly proposed TOFDM signal, followed by (ii) interference analysis, (iii) systems design for uncoded and coded schemes, (iv) experimental implementation and (v) performance evaluation of the new proposed signal and system, with comparisons to conventional OFDM systems. Results indicate that signals can be recovered with truncated symbol transmission. Based on the TOFDM principle, a new receiving technique, termed partial symbol recovery (PSR), is designed and implemented in software de ned radio (SDR), that allows efficient operation of two users for overlapping data, in wireless communication systems operating with collisions. The PSR technique is based on recovery of collision-free partial OFDM symbols, followed by the reconstruction of complete symbols to recover progressively the frames of two users suffering collisions. The system is evaluated in a testbed of 12-nodes using SDR platforms. The thesis also proposes channel estimation and equalization technique for non-orthogonal signals in 5G scenarios, using an orthogonal demodulator and zero padding. Finally, the implementation of complete SEFDM systems in real-time is investigated and described in detail
Joint signal detection and channel estimation in rank-deficient MIMO systems

Detection and decoding algorithms of multi-antenna diversity techniques for terrestrial DVB systems
This PhD dissertation analyzes the behavior of multi-antenna diversity techniques in broadcasting scenarios of TDT (terrestrial digital television) systems and proposes a low-complexity detection and decoding design for their practical implementation. For that purpose, the transmission-reception chains of the European DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial) and DVB-T2 standards have been implemented over which diversity and MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) techniques have been assessed through Monte Carlo simulations.
On one hand, the most important multi-antenna diversity techniques such as CDD (cyclic delay diversity), Alamouti code-based SFBC (space-frequency block coding) and MRC (maximum ratio combining), have been evaluated in a DVB-T system over both fixed and mobile Rayleigh and Ricean channels. With the DVB-T2 standard release, multi-antenna processing has actually been introduced in digital television systems. The distributed SFBC configuration proposed in DVB-T2 is analyzed from a performance point of view considering different propagation conditions in an SFN (single frequency network).
On the other hand, error-performance and detection complexity analyses of 2x2 FRFD (full-rate full-diversity) SFBCs are carried out for last-generation DTV (digital television) systems. The use of channel coding based on LDPC (low-density parity check) codes in new standards such as DVB-T2, involves a soft-output MAP (maximum a posteriori ) detection which results in an increase of the detection complexity. In order to study the FRFD codes behavior in such a BICM (bit-interleaved coded modulation) scheme, the Golden code, which achieves the maximum coding gain, and the Sezginer-Sari code, which has a lower inherent detection complexity as an expense of sacrificing performance gain, have been chosen. Using LSD (list sphere decoder) detection, BER (bit error rate) performance and computational cost results are provided for TDT scenarios.
In order to overcome the variable complexity of the LSD, LFSD (list fixed-complexity sphere decoder) detection is proposed for practical implementations. A redesign of the previously proposed LFSD algorithm for spatial multiplexing MIMO systems has been performed for FRFD SFBCs with close-to-LSD performance. Furthermore, an analysis of the number of candidates is carried out in order to maximize the eficiency of the algorithm. Due to its fixed complexity, the novel algorithm can be fully pipelined making feasible a realistic implementation in chip.
Doktoretza-tesi honen gai nagusia Lurreko Telebista Digitalerako antena anitzeko dibertsitate tekniken portaera ikertzea da, hartzailerako konplexutasun baxuko algoritmoen diseinua oinarri hartuta. dissertationMultiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technique has emerged as a key feature for future generations of wireless communication systems. It increases the channel capacity proportionate to the minimum number of transmit and receive antennas. This dissertation addresses the receiver design for high-rate MIMO communications in at fading environments. The emphasis of the thesis is on the cases where channel state information (CSI) is not available and thus, clever channel estimation algorithms have to be developed to bene t from the maximum available channel capacity. The thesis makes four distinct novel contributions. First, we note that the conventional MCMC-MIMO detector presented in the prior work may deteriorate as SNR increases. We suggest and show through computer simulations that this problem to a great extent can be solved by initializing the MCMC detector with regulated states which are found through linear detectors. We also introduce the novel concept of staged-MCMC in a turbo receiver, where we start the detection process at a lower complexity and increase complexity only if the data could not be correctly detected in the present stage of data detection. Second, we note that in high-rate MIMO communications, joint data detection and channel estimation poses new challenges when a turbo loop is used to improve the quality of the estimated channel and the detected data. Erroneous detected data may propagate in the turbo loop and, thus, degrade the performance of the receiver signi cantly. This is referred to as error propagation. We propose a novel receiver that decorrelates channel estimation and the detected data to avoid the detrimental e ect of error propagation. Third, the dissertation studies joint channel estimation and MIMO detection over a continuously time-varying channel and proposes a new dual-layer channel estimator to overcome the complexity of optimal channel estimators. The proposed dual-layer channel estimator reduces the complexity of the MIMO detector with optimal channel estimator by an order of magnitude at a cost of a negligible performance degradation, on the order of 0.1 to 0.2 dB. The fourth contribution of this dissertation is to note that the Wiener ltering techniques that are discussed in this dissertation and elsewhere in the literature assume that channel (time-varying) statistics are available. We propose a new method that estimates such statistics using the coarse channel estimates obtained through pilot symbols. The dissertation also makes an additional contribution revealing di erences between the MCMC-MIMO and LMMSE-MIMO detectors. We nd that under the realistic condition where CSI has to be estimated, hence the available channel estimate will be noisy, the MCMC-MIMO detector outperforms the LMMSE-MIMO detector with a signi cant margin
