Bisimulations for non-deterministic labelled Markov processes
We extend the theory of labelled Markov processes to include internal non-determinism, which is a fundamental concept for the further development of a process theory with abstraction on non-deterministic continuous probabilistic systems. We define non-deterministic labelled Markov processes (NLMP) and provide three definitions of bisimulations: a bisimulation following a traditional characterisation; a state-based bisimulation tailored to our 'measurable' non-determinism; and an event-based bisimulation. We show the relations between them, including the fact that the largest state bisimulation is also an event bisimulation. We also introduce a variation of the Hennessy-Milner logic that characterises event bisimulation and is sound with respect to the other bisimulations for an arbitrary NLMP. This logic, however, is infinitary as it contains a denumerable. We then introduce a finitary sublogic that characterises all bisimulations for an image finite NLMP whose underlying measure space is also analytic. Hence, in this setting, all the notions of bisimulation we consider turn out to be equal. Finally, we show that all these bisimulation notions are different in the general case. The counterexamples that separate them turn out to be non-probabilistic NLMPs.Fil: D'argenio, Pedro Ruben. Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. Facultad de Matemática, Astronomía y Física. Probabilistic Bisimulation: Naturally on Distributions
In contrast to the usual understanding of probabilistic systems as stochastic
processes, recently these systems have also been regarded as transformers of
probabilities. In this paper, we give a natural definition of strong
bisimulation for probabilistic systems corresponding to this view that treats
probability distributions as first-class citizens. Our definition applies in
the same way to discrete systems as well as to systems with uncountable state
and action spaces. Several examples demonstrate that our definition refines the
understanding of behavioural equivalences of probabilistic systems. In
particular, it solves a long-standing open problem concerning the
representation of memoryless continuous time by memory-full continuous time.
Finally, we give algorithms for computing this bisimulation not only for finite
but also for classes of uncountably infinite systems
Distribution-based bisimulation for labelled Markov processes
In this paper we propose a (sub)distribution-based bisimulation for labelled
Markov processes and compare it with earlier definitions of state and event
bisimulation, which both only compare states. In contrast to those state-based
bisimulations, our distribution bisimulation is weaker, but corresponds more
closely to linear properties. We construct a logic and a metric to describe our
distribution bisimulation and discuss linearity, continuity and compositional
properties.Comment: Accepted by FORMATS 201
Bisimilarity is not Borel
We prove that the relation of bisimilarity between countable labelled
transition systems is -complete (hence not Borel), by reducing the
set of non-wellorders over the natural numbers continuously to it.
This has an impact on the theory of probabilistic and nondeterministic
processes over uncountable spaces, since logical characterizations of
bisimilarity (as, for instance, those based on the unique structure theorem for
analytic spaces) require a countable logic whose formulas have measurable
semantics. Our reduction shows that such a logic does not exist in the case of
image-infinite processes.Comment: 20 pages, 1 figure; proof of Sigma_1^1 completeness added with

Bisimulations and Logical Characterizations on Continuous-time Markov Decision Processes
In this paper we study strong and weak bisimulation equivalences for
continuous-time Markov decision processes (CTMDPs) and the logical
characterizations of these relations with respect to the continuous-time
stochastic logic (CSL). For strong bisimulation, it is well known that it is
strictly finer than CSL equivalence. In this paper we propose strong and weak
bisimulations for CTMDPs and show that for a subclass of CTMDPs, strong and
weak bisimulations are both sound and complete with respect to the equivalences
induced by CSL and the sub-logic of CSL without next operator respectively. We
then consider a standard extension of CSL, and show that it and its sub-logic
without X can be fully characterized by strong and weak bisimulations
respectively over arbitrary CTMDPs.Comment: The conference version of this paper was published at VMCAI 201
Behavioural equivalences for timed systems
Timed transition systems are behavioural models that include an explicit
treatment of time flow and are used to formalise the semantics of several
foundational process calculi and automata. Despite their relevance, a general
mathematical characterisation of timed transition systems and their behavioural
theory is still missing. We introduce the first uniform framework for timed
behavioural models that encompasses known behavioural equivalences such as
timed bisimulations, timed language equivalences as well as their weak and
time-abstract counterparts. All these notions of equivalences are naturally
organised by their discriminating power in a spectrum. We prove that this
result does not depend on the type of the systems under scrutiny: it holds for
any generalisation of timed transition system. We instantiate our framework to
timed transition systems and their quantitative extensions such as timed
probabilistic systems
Probabilistic Bisimulations for PCTL Model Checking of Interval MDPs
Verification of PCTL properties of MDPs with convex uncertainties has been
investigated recently by Puggelli et al. However, model checking algorithms
typically suffer from state space explosion. In this paper, we address
probabilistic bisimulation to reduce the size of such an MDPs while preserving
PCTL properties it satisfies. We discuss different interpretations of
uncertainty in the models which are studied in the literature and that result
in two different definitions of bisimulations. We give algorithms to compute
the quotients of these bisimulations in time polynomial in the size of the
model and exponential in the uncertain branching. Finally, we show by a case
study that large models in practice can have small branching and that a
substantial state space reduction can be achieved by our approach.Comment: In Proceedings SynCoP 2014, arXiv:1403.784
