    Multidisciplinary perspectives on Artificial Intelligence and the law

    This open access book presents an interdisciplinary, multi-authored, edited collection of chapters on Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) and the Law. AI technology has come to play a central role in the modern data economy. Through a combination of increased computing power, the growing availability of data and the advancement of algorithms, AI has now become an umbrella term for some of the most transformational technological breakthroughs of this age. The importance of AI stems from both the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that it entails. While AI applications hold the promise of economic growth and efficiency gains, they also create significant risks and uncertainty. The potential and perils of AI have thus come to dominate modern discussions of technology and ethics – and although AI was initially allowed to largely develop without guidelines or rules, few would deny that the law is set to play a fundamental role in shaping the future of AI. As the debate over AI is far from over, the need for rigorous analysis has never been greater. This book thus brings together contributors from different fields and backgrounds to explore how the law might provide answers to some of the most pressing questions raised by AI.     Climate Change and Critical Agrarian Studies

    Climate change is perhaps the greatest threat to humanity today and plays out as a cruel engine of myriad forms of injustice, violence and destruction. The effects of climate change from human-made emissions of greenhouse gases are devastating and accelerating; yet are uncertain and uneven both in terms of geography and socio-economic impacts. Emerging from the dynamics of capitalism since the industrial revolution — as well as industrialisation under state-led socialism — the consequences of climate change are especially profound for the countryside and its inhabitants. The book interrogates the narratives and strategies that frame climate change and examines the institutionalised responses in agrarian settings, highlighting what exclusions and inclusions result. It explores how different people — in relation to class and other co-constituted axes of social difference such as gender, race, ethnicity, age and occupation — are affected by climate change, as well as the climate adaptation and mitigation responses being implemented in rural areas. The book in turn explores how climate change – and the responses to it - affect processes of social differentiation, trajectories of accumulation and in turn agrarian politics. Finally, the book examines what strategies are required to confront climate change, and the underlying political-economic dynamics that cause it, reflecting on what this means for agrarian struggles across the world. The 26 chapters in this volume explore how the relationship between capitalism and climate change plays out in the rural world and, in particular, the way agrarian struggles connect with the huge challenge of climate change. Through a huge variety of case studies alongside more conceptual chapters, the book makes the often-missing connection between climate change and critical agrarian studies.     Optimizing the Role of Information Technology in Improving the Work Discipline of Language Center Employees

    Employee discipline is a very important factor in achieving the desired organizational goals and needs to be evaluated and improved. This study aims to explain the optimization of the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to improve employee work discipline at the Language Center of South Sumatra Province. The survey method was used in this study by taking a random sample of 10 respondents from the population of employees of the Language Center of South Sumatra Province who were selected by purposive sampling technique. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques and simple linear regression. The results of the study show that overall, the work discipline of employees at the South Sumatra Province Language Center is at a good level. However, several factors such as information technology capabilities, especially in optimizing the use of fingerprint attendance machines, work motivation, supervision, and work environment affect employee work discipline. This study recommends increasing work motivation and more effective supervision to improve employee work discipline by optimizing the use of information and communication technology that already exists at the Language Center of South Sumatra Province. Optimizing the use of information technology, especially in the use of fingerprint attendance machines, can significantly increase employee productivity and performance as well as improve the performance of the South Sumatra Province Language Center in providing better services to the community

    A Causal Comparative Analysis of Leveraging the Business Analytical Capabilities and the Value and Competitive Advantages of Mid-level Professionals Within Higher Education

    The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study is an empirical examination of the differences in business intelligence capability and the value and competitive advantage of mid-level higher education academia professionals from community colleges, four-year public, and four-year private institutions within the United States. Institutions of higher education have an overabundant amount of student data that is often inaccessible and underutilized. Based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Management Information Systems/Decision Support Systems theory, using two-way ANOVA analysis, this research examined factors to understand the mastery of readiness for mid-level professionals in higher education institutions to embrace digital technologies and resources to develop a culture of digital transformation. This study applied the Business Analytics Capability Assessment survey responses from 176 mid-level higher education professionals, from community colleges, four-year private, and four-year public institutions, to understand how higher education professionals use Business Intelligence Analytics (BIA) and Big Data (BD) to improve the organization, operational business decisions, and data management strategies to provide actionable insights. This study found no significance between the type of institution that has business intelligence capability and the value and competitive advantage. A significant difference with a medium effect was identified between the Business Analytics Capability and the Value and Competitive Advantage for mid-level professionals who do and do not utilize BIA and BD resources. Therefore, this study calls for future research to understand how successful institutions have implemented BIA and BD tools and how higher education is shaped on a macro level

    Next Generation Business Ecosystems: Engineering Decentralized Markets, Self-Sovereign Identities and Tokenization

    Digital transformation research increasingly shifts from studying information systems within organizations towards adopting an ecosystem perspective, where multiple actors co-create value. While digital platforms have become a ubiquitous phenomenon in consumer-facing industries, organizations remain cautious about fully embracing the ecosystem concept and sharing data with external partners. Concerns about the market power of platform orchestrators and ongoing discussions on privacy, individual empowerment, and digital sovereignty further complicate the widespread adoption of business ecosystems, particularly in the European Union. In this context, technological innovations in Web3, including blockchain and other distributed ledger technologies, have emerged as potential catalysts for disrupting centralized gatekeepers and enabling a strategic shift towards user-centric, privacy-oriented next-generation business ecosystems. However, existing research efforts focus on decentralizing interactions through distributed network topologies and open protocols lack theoretical convergence, resulting in a fragmented and complex landscape that inadequately addresses the challenges organizations face when transitioning to an ecosystem strategy that harnesses the potential of disintermediation. To address these gaps and successfully engineer next-generation business ecosystems, a comprehensive approach is needed that encompasses the technical design, economic models, and socio-technical dynamics. This dissertation aims to contribute to this endeavor by exploring the implications of Web3 technologies on digital innovation and transformation paths. Drawing on a combination of qualitative and quantitative research, it makes three overarching contributions: First, a conceptual perspective on \u27tokenization\u27 in markets clarifies its ambiguity and provides a unified understanding of the role in ecosystems. This perspective includes frameworks on: (a) technological; (b) economic; and (c) governance aspects of tokenization. Second, a design perspective on \u27decentralized marketplaces\u27 highlights the need for an integrated understanding of micro-structures, business structures, and IT infrastructures in blockchain-enabled marketplaces. This perspective includes: (a) an explorative literature review on design factors; (b) case studies and insights from practitioners to develop requirements and design principles; and (c) a design science project with an interface design prototype of blockchain-enabled marketplaces. Third, an economic perspective on \u27self-sovereign identities\u27 (SSI) as micro-structural elements of decentralized markets. This perspective includes: (a) value creation mechanisms and business aspects of strategic alliances governing SSI ecosystems; (b) business model characteristics adopted by organizations leveraging SSI; and (c) business model archetypes and a framework for SSI ecosystem engineering efforts. The dissertation concludes by discussing limitations as well as outlining potential avenues for future research. These include, amongst others, exploring the challenges of ecosystem bootstrapping in the absence of intermediaries, examining the make-or-join decision in ecosystem emergence, addressing the multidimensional complexity of Web3-enabled ecosystems, investigating incentive mechanisms for inter-organizational collaboration, understanding the role of trust in decentralized environments, and exploring varying degrees of decentralization with potential transition pathways

    An Exploration of the Thoughts and Emotions Associated with Goal Attainment

    The aim of this study is to explore and better understand two things that cannot be seen, but that play a significant role in goal outcomes – the inner world of thoughts and emotions. With some coaching scholars and practitioners believing that positive thinking and an optimistic outlook are valuable components of successful goal pursuit, this study explores positive and negative thoughts and emotions in a unified way, to reveal the reality of the ‘inner-game’ with a view to informing coaching practice. A quasiquantilogical Q-Methodology study of subjectivity is used to ‘make the unseen seen’. A universe of subjective thoughts and emotions experienced during goal pursuit are generated from literature and a Qualtrics survey to create a Q-Set of forty statements. Nineteen participants in professional and organisational settings offer their perspectives on these statements ranking them in a semi-forced distribution from ‘most agree’ to ‘least agree’. Using factor analysis, the nineteen individual perspectives reveal clusters of viewpoints and four distinct views have emerged. The Four View Framework including Positive, Realist, Dreamer, Conflicted, implies the emotions and thoughts experienced by coachees may not reflect the belief that positive thinking is the best or only route to goal attainment. The ‘negative’ Realists who experience self-doubt, overwhelm and anxiousness go on to achieve their goals, whilst only a quarter of the positive thinking ‘Dreamers’ and a third of the ‘Positive’ participants achieve theirs. This study offers a greater understanding of the inner experience of thoughts and emotions in pursuing goals. Revealing the combinations of negative emotions balanced with positive thoughts associated with goal attainment. It also offers a practical set of coaching cards and a Coaching Compass within the Four View Framework, creating a toolkit for coaching practitioners to help map and navigate the journey towards goal attainment

    Optimising multimodal fusion for biometric identification systems

    Biometric systems are automatic means for imitating the human brain’s ability of identifying and verifying other humans by their behavioural and physiological characteristics. A system, which uses more than one biometric modality at the same time, is known as a multimodal system. Multimodal biometric systems consolidate the evidence presented by multiple biometric sources and typically provide better recognition performance compared to systems based on a single biometric modality. This thesis addresses some issues related to the implementation of multimodal biometric identity verification systems. The thesis assesses the feasibility of using commercial offthe-shelf products to construct deployable multimodal biometric system. It also identifies multimodal biometric fusion as a challenging optimisation problem when one considers the presence of several configurations and settings, in particular the verification thresholds adopted by each biometric device and the decision fusion algorithm implemented for a particular configuration. The thesis proposes a novel approach for the optimisation of multimodal biometric systems based on the use of genetic algorithms for solving some of the problems associated with the different settings. The proposed optimisation method also addresses some of the problems associated with score normalization. In addition, the thesis presents an analysis of the performance of different fusion rules when characterising the system users as sheep, goats, lambs and wolves. The results presented indicate that the proposed optimisation method can be used to solve the problems associated with threshold settings. This clearly demonstrates a valuable potential strategy that can be used to set a priori thresholds of the different biometric devices before using them. The proposed optimisation architecture addressed the problem of score normalisation, which makes it an effective “plug-and-play” design philosophy to system implementation. The results also indicate that the optimisation approach can be used for effectively determining the weight settings, which is used in many applications for varying the relative importance of the different performance parameters
