    Constructing living buildings: a review of relevant technologies for a novel application of biohybrid robotics

    Biohybrid robotics takes an engineering approach to the expansion and exploitation of biological behaviours for application to automated tasks. Here, we identify the construction of living buildings and infrastructure as a high-potential application domain for biohybrid robotics, and review technological advances relevant to its future development. Construction, civil infrastructure maintenance and building occupancy in the last decades have comprised a major portion of economic production, energy consumption and carbon emissions. Integrating biological organisms into automated construction tasks and permanent building components therefore has high potential for impact. Live materials can provide several advantages over standard synthetic construction materials, including self-repair of damage, increase rather than degradation of structural performance over time, resilience to corrosive environments, support of biodiversity, and mitigation of urban heat islands. Here, we review relevant technologies, which are currently disparate. They span robotics, self-organizing systems, artificial life, construction automation, structural engineering, architecture, bioengineering, biomaterials, and molecular and cellular biology. In these disciplines, developments relevant to biohybrid construction and living buildings are in the early stages, and typically are not exchanged between disciplines.     A comparison of processing techniques for producing prototype injection moulding inserts.

    This project involves the investigation of processing techniques for producing low-cost moulding inserts used in the particulate injection moulding (PIM) process. Prototype moulds were made from both additive and subtractive processes as well as a combination of the two. The general motivation for this was to reduce the entry cost of users when considering PIM. PIM cavity inserts were first made by conventional machining from a polymer block using the pocket NC desktop mill. PIM cavity inserts were also made by fused filament deposition modelling using the Tiertime UP plus 3D printer. The injection moulding trials manifested in surface finish and part removal defects. The feedstock was a titanium metal blend which is brittle in comparison to commodity polymers. That in combination with the mesoscale features, small cross-sections and complex geometries were considered the main problems. For both processing methods, fixes were identified and made to test the theory. These consisted of a blended approach that saw a combination of both the additive and subtractive processes being used. The parts produced from the three processing methods are investigated and their respective merits and issues are discussed

    Reducing risk in pre-production investigations through undergraduate engineering projects.

    This poster is the culmination of final year Bachelor of Engineering Technology (B.Eng.Tech) student projects in 2017 and 2018. The B.Eng.Tech is a level seven qualification that aligns with the Sydney accord for a three-year engineering degree and hence is internationally benchmarked. The enabling mechanism of these projects is the industry connectivity that creates real-world projects and highlights the benefits of the investigation of process at the technologist level. The methodologies we use are basic and transparent, with enough depth of technical knowledge to ensure the industry partners gain from the collaboration process. The process we use minimizes the disconnect between the student and the industry supervisor while maintaining the academic freedom of the student and the commercial sensitivities of the supervisor. The general motivation for this approach is the reduction of the entry cost of the industry to enable consideration of new technologies and thereby reducing risk to core business and shareholder profits.     The human arm bounded by soft tissues and muscles is capable of fast movement with high precision fidelity. And it is soft as it has muscles and other tissue. Nowadays, robots can do many human tasks. Robot arms are also becoming softer, to make them stronger and safer to use around humans while working in real-world environments. In this study, the focus is on a robot for harvesting cauliflower, and the cutting of cauliflowers in particular. The robotic platform is designed to reuse modular robotic components from other crops and/or different cauliflower varieties. The platform has two robot arms with variable-stiffness technology. The first arm is for cutting the cauliflower in its steam. And the second is for picking the cauliflower. The GummiArm is a 7+1 DOF robot arm and is an open-source project. Here it is used with a cauliflower-specific end effector, which is a cutter designed with 3d printer, while the second arm has a gripping end-effector. The bi-manual configuration allows the separation of grasping and cutting behaviours into separate robot manipulators, enabling flexibility to adapt to different varieties. Here the focus was on the cutting, and on the control of these through the Robot Operating System (ROS). Several experiments were performed with a force-Analysis of the cutting behaviour, during teleoperation, and when using a control exploiting the passive compliance of the GummiArm. These early experiments with the laboratory platform demonstrate the platform's promise, but also a set of challenges to tackle. This new data can be used to compare human labour performance, develop operational concepts and business plans, and drive future design decisions.self fund studen

    Bio-inspired computation for big data fusion, storage, processing, learning and visualization: state of the art and future directions

    This overview gravitates on research achievements that have recently emerged from the confluence between Big Data technologies and bio-inspired computation. A manifold of reasons can be identified for the profitable synergy between these two paradigms, all rooted on the adaptability, intelligence and robustness that biologically inspired principles can provide to technologies aimed to manage, retrieve, fuse and process Big Data efficiently. We delve into this research field by first analyzing in depth the existing literature, with a focus on advances reported in the last few years. This prior literature analysis is complemented by an identification of the new trends and open challenges in Big Data that remain unsolved to date, and that can be effectively addressed by bio-inspired algorithms. As a second contribution, this work elaborates on how bio-inspired algorithms need to be adapted for their use in a Big Data context, in which data fusion becomes crucial as a previous step to allow processing and mining several and potentially heterogeneous data sources. This analysis allows exploring and comparing the scope and efficiency of existing approaches across different problems and domains, with the purpose of identifying new potential applications and research niches.     Smart Farming Using Robots in IoT to Increase Agriculture Yields: A Systematic Literature Review

    Robots are beneficial in everyday life, especially in helping food security in the agricultural industry. Smart farming alone is not enough because smart farming is only automated without mobile hardware. The existence of robots can minimize human involvement in agriculture so that humans can maximize activities outside of farms. This Study aims to review articles regarding robots in smart farming to increase agriclture yields. This article systematically uses the systematic literature review method utilizing the Preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analyses (PRISMA) by submitting 3 Research Questions (RQ). According to the authors of the 3 RQs, it is necessary to represent the function and purpose of robots in farms and to be used in the context of the importance of robots in agriculture because of the potential impact of increase agriculture yields. This Research contributes to finding and answering 3 RQ, which are the roots of the use of robots. The results taken, the authors get 116 articles that can be reviewed and answered RQ and achieve goals. RQ 1 was responded to with the article's country of origin, research criteria, and the year of the article. In RQ 2 the author answered that Research often carried out 6 schemes, then the most Research was (Challenge Robots, Ethics, and Opinions in Agriculture) and (Design, Planning, and Robotic Systems in Agriculture). Finally, in RQ 3, the author describes the research scheme based on understanding related Research. The author hopes this basic scheme can be a benchmark or a new direction for future researchers and related agricultural industries to improve agricultural quality

    Industrial, Collaborative and Mobile Robotics in Latin America: Review of Mechatronic Technologies for Advanced Automation

    Mechatronics and Robotics (MaR) have recently gained importance in product development and manufacturing settings and applications. Therefore, the Center for Space Emerging Technologies (C-SET) has managed an international multi-disciplinary study to present, historically, the first Latin American general review of industrial, collaborative, and mobile robotics, with the support of North American and European researchers and institutions. The methodology is developed by considering literature extracted from Scopus, Web of Science, and Aerospace Research Central and adding reports written by companies and government organizations. This describes the state-of-the-art of MaR until the year 2023 in the 3 Sub-Regions: North America, Central America, and South America, having achieved important results related to the academy, industry, government, and entrepreneurship; thus, the statistics shown in this manuscript are unique. Also, this article explores the potential for further work and advantages described by robotic companies such as ABB, KUKA, and Mecademic and the use of the Robot Operating System (ROS) in order to promote research, development, and innovation. In addition, the integration with industry 4.0 and digital manufacturing, architecture and construction, aerospace, smart agriculture, artificial intelligence, and computational social science (human-robot interaction) is analyzed to show the promising features of these growing tech areas, considering the improvements to increase production, manufacturing, and education in the Region.
