Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence: Three Fresh Ideas

    Get PDF
Human-Centered AI (HCAI) is a promising direction for designing AI systems that support human self-efficacy, promote creativity, clarify responsibility, and facilitate social participation. These human aspirations also encourage consideration of privacy, security, environmental protection, social justice, and human rights. This commentary reverses the current emphasis on algorithms and AI methods, by putting humans at the center of systems design thinking, in effect, a second Copernican Revolution. It offers three ideas: (1) a two-dimensional HCAI framework, which shows how it is possible to have both high levels of human control AND high levels of automation, (2) a shift from emulating humans to empowering people with a plea to shift language, imagery, and metaphors away from portrayals of intelligent autonomous teammates towards descriptions of powerful tool-like appliances and tele-operated devices, and (3) a three-level governance structure that describes how software engineering teams can develop more reliable systems, how managers can emphasize a safety culture across an organization, and how industry-wide certification can promote trustworthy HCAI systems. These ideas will be challenged by some, refined by others, extended to accommodate new technologies, and validated with quantitative and qualitative research. They offer a reframe -- a chance to restart design discussions for products and services -- which could bring greater benefits to individuals, families, communities, businesses, and society

Spatial-Intelligent Decision Support System for Sustainable Downstream Palm Oil Based Agroindustry within the Supply Chain Network: A Systematic Literature Review and Future Research

    Get PDF
Oil palm plantations as one of the sexiest commodities; produce a high yield of oil and fat that can be used in various sectors. The prospect of oil palm and its derivative products is good, but there are obstacles and problems faced that are mainly related to sustainability issues in oil palm plantations and its downstream process. Therefore, it is important to study the decision-making process that are needed to develop sustainable palm oil agroindustry. This paper aims at providing a comprehensive literature review for decision support system for sustainable agroindustry. Totally, 186 scientific publication articles from 2005 to 2019 were reviewed and synthesized. The reviewed articles were categorize based on the keywords of palm oil sustainability, geographic information system (GIS), and decision support system (DSS). The research gap and pointers for future research that are identified is the lack of sustainability aspect inclusion on decision-making process. We also identified the lack discussion of integrated spatial and intelligent tools through DSS for better, faster, and smarter decision-making process. In the end part of the paper, a pointer for possible future research was develop in terms of combination through spatial-intelligent system applying business analytics for sustainable agroindustry

European governance challenges in bio-engineering : making perfect life : bio-engineering (in) the 21st century : final report

In the STOA project Making Perfect Life four fields were studied of 21st century bio-engineering: engineering of living artefacts, engineering of the body, engineering of the brain, and engineering of intelligent artefacts. This report describes the main results of the project. It shows how developments in the four fields of bio-engineering are shaped by two megatrends: "biology becoming technology" and "technology becoming biology". These developments result in a broadening of the bio-engineering debate in our society. The report addresses the long term views that are inspiring this debate and discusses a multitude of ethical, legal and social issues that arise from bio-engineering developments in the fields described. Against this background four specific developments are studied in more detail: the rise of human genome sequencing, the market introduction of neurodevices, the capturing by information technology of the psychological and physiological states of users, and the pursuit of standardisation in synthetic biology. These developments are taken in this report as a starting point for an analysis of some of the main European governance challenges in 21st century bio-engineering

    Adaptive facade network — Europe

    Get PDF
Energy efficient buildings significantly contribute to meeting the EU climate and energy sustainability targets for 2020 as approximately one-third of all end-user energy in Europe today is consumed by space heating/cooling, ventilation and lighting of buildings. In this context, the energy performance of future building envelopes will play a key role.  The main aim of COST Action TU1403 with 120 participants from 26 European countries is to harmonise, share and disseminate technological knowledge on adaptive facades on a European level and to generate ideas for new innovative technologies and solutions

Toward Network-based DDoS Detection in Software-defined Networks

    Get PDF
To combat susceptibility of modern computing systems to cyberattack, identifying and disrupting malicious traffic without human intervention is essential. To accomplish this, three main tasks for an effective intrusion detection system have been identified: monitor network traffic, categorize and identify anomalous behavior in near real time, and take appropriate action against the identified threat. This system leverages distributed SDN architecture and the principles of Artificial Immune Systems and Self-Organizing Maps to build a network-based intrusion detection system capable of detecting and terminating DDoS attacks in progress
