    Bijective rigid motions of the 2D Cartesian grid

    International audienceRigid motions are fundamental operations in image processing. While they are bijective and isometric in R^2, they lose these properties when digitized in Z^2. To investigate these defects, we first extend a combinatorial model of the local behavior of rigid motions on Z^2, initially proposed by Nouvel and RĂ©mila for rotations on Z^2. This allows us to study bijective rigid motions on Z^2, and to propose two algorithms for verifying whether a given rigid motion restricted to a given finite subset of Z^2 is bijective

    Geometric, Variational Discretization of Continuum Theories

    This study derives geometric, variational discretizations of continuum theories arising in fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), and the dynamics of complex fluids. A central role in these discretizations is played by the geometric formulation of fluid dynamics, which views solutions to the governing equations for perfect fluid flow as geodesics on the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the fluid domain. Inspired by this framework, we construct a finite-dimensional approximation to the diffeomorphism group and its Lie algebra, thereby permitting a variational temporal discretization of geodesics on the spatially discretized diffeomorphism group. The extension to MHD and complex fluid flow is then made through an appeal to the theory of Euler-Poincar\'{e} systems with advection, which provides a generalization of the variational formulation of ideal fluid flow to fluids with one or more advected parameters. Upon deriving a family of structured integrators for these systems, we test their performance via a numerical implementation of the update schemes on a cartesian grid. Among the hallmarks of these new numerical methods are exact preservation of momenta arising from symmetries, automatic satisfaction of solenoidal constraints on vector fields, good long-term energy behavior, robustness with respect to the spatial and temporal resolution of the discretization, and applicability to irregular meshes

    Motion Segmentation of Truncated Signed Distance Function based Volumetric Surfaces

    © 2015 IEEE.Truncated signed distance function (TSDF) based volumetric surface reconstructions of static environments can be readily acquired using recent RGB-D camera based mapping systems. If objects in the environment move then a previously obtained TSDF reconstruction is no longer current. Handling this problem requires segmenting moving objects from the reconstruction. To this end, we present a novel solution to the motion segmentation of TSDF volumes. The segmentation problem is cast as CRF-based MAP inference in the voxel space. We propose: a novel data term by solving sparse multi-body motion segmentation and computing likelihoods for each motion label in the RGB-D image space, and, a novel pair wise term based on gradients of the TSDF volume. Experimental evaluation shows that the proposed approach achieves successful segmentations on reconstructions acquired with Kinect Fusion. Unlike the existing solutions which only work if the objects move completely from their initially occupied spaces, the proposed method permits segmentation of objects when they start to move

    Defining the Pose of any 3D Rigid Object and an Associated Distance

    The pose of a rigid object is usually regarded as a rigid transformation, described by a translation and a rotation. However, equating the pose space with the space of rigid transformations is in general abusive, as it does not account for objects with proper symmetries -- which are common among man-made objects.In this article, we define pose as a distinguishable static state of an object, and equate a pose with a set of rigid transformations. Based solely on geometric considerations, we propose a frame-invariant metric on the space of possible poses, valid for any physical rigid object, and requiring no arbitrary tuning. This distance can be evaluated efficiently using a representation of poses within an Euclidean space of at most 12 dimensions depending on the object's symmetries. This makes it possible to efficiently perform neighborhood queries such as radius searches or k-nearest neighbor searches within a large set of poses using off-the-shelf methods. Pose averaging considering this metric can similarly be performed easily, using a projection function from the Euclidean space onto the pose space. The practical value of those theoretical developments is illustrated with an application of pose estimation of instances of a 3D rigid object given an input depth map, via a Mean Shift procedure

The surgeon controlling the robot is shown a stabilized view of the heart. First, we consider the use of directional statistics for estimation of the phase of the heartbeat.     New Exact and Numerical Solutions of the (Convection-)Diffusion Kernels on SE(3)

    We consider hypo-elliptic diffusion and convection-diffusion on R3⋊S2\mathbb{R}^3 \rtimes S^2, the quotient of the Lie group of rigid body motions SE(3) in which group elements are equivalent if they are equal up to a rotation around the reference axis. We show that we can derive expressions for the convolution kernels in terms of eigenfunctions of the PDE, by extending the approach for the SE(2) case. This goes via application of the Fourier transform of the PDE in the spatial variables, yielding a second order differential operator. We show that the eigenfunctions of this operator can be expressed as (generalized) spheroidal wave functions. The same exact formulas are derived via the Fourier transform on SE(3). We solve both the evolution itself, as well as the time-integrated process that corresponds to the resolvent operator. Furthermore, we have extended a standard numerical procedure from SE(2) to SE(3) for the computation of the solution kernels that is directly related to the exact solutions. Finally, we provide a novel analytic approximation of the kernels that we briefly compare to the exact kernels.Comment: Revised and restructure

Nous divisons le problĂšme en trois Ă©tapes : D'abord, nous donnons une solution au problĂšme de la cartographie et localisation simultanĂ©es pour la vision monoculaire qui fonctionne dans les situations les moins bien conditionnĂ©es gĂ©omĂ©triquement. Ensuite, nous incorporons l'observabilitĂ© 3D instantanĂ©e en dupliquant le matĂ©riel de vision avec traitement monoculaire. Ceci Ă©limine les inconvĂ©nients inhĂ©rents aux systĂšmes stĂ©rĂ©o classiques. Nous ajoutons enfin la dĂ©tection et suivi des objets mobiles proches en nous servant de cette observabilitĂ© 3D. Nous choisissons une reprĂ©sentation Ă©parse et ponctuelle du monde et ses objets. La charge calculatoire des algorithmes de perception est allĂ©gĂ©e en focalisant activement l'attention aux rĂ©gions de l'image avec plus d'intĂ©rĂȘt. ABSTRACT : In this thesis we give new means for a machine to understand complex and dynamic visual scenes in real time. In particular, we solve the problem of simultaneously reconstructing a certain representation of the world's geometry, the observer's trajectory, and the moving objects' structures and trajectories, with the aid of vision exteroceptive sensors. We proceeded by dividing the problem into three main steps: First, we give a solution to the Simultaneous Localization And Mapping problem (SLAM) for monocular vision that is able to adequately perform in the most ill-conditioned situations: those where the observer approaches the scene in straight line. Second, we incorporate full 3D instantaneous observability by duplicating vision hardware with monocular algorithms. This permits us to avoid some of the inherent drawbacks of classic stereo systems, notably their limited range of 3D observability and the necessity of frequent mechanical calibration. Third, we add detection and tracking of moving objects by making use of this full 3D observability, whose necessity we judge almost inevitable. We choose a sparse, punctual representation of both the world and the moving objects in order to alleviate the computational payload of the image processing algorithms, which are required to extract the necessary geometrical information out of the images. This alleviation is additionally supported by active feature detection and search mechanisms which focus the attention to those image regions with the highest interest. This focusing is achieved by an extensive exploitation of the current knowledge available on the system (all the mapped information), something that we finally highlight to be the ultimate key to success
