    Hierarchical video surveillance architecture: a chassis for video big data analytics and exploration

    There is increasing reliance on video surveillance systems for systematic derivation, analysis and interpretation of the data needed for predicting, planning, evaluating and implementing public safety. This is evident from the massive number of surveillance cameras deployed across public locations. For example, in July 2013, the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) reported that over 4 million CCTV cameras had been installed in Britain alone. The BSIA also reveal that only 1.5% of these are state owned. In this paper, we propose a framework that allows access to data from privately owned cameras, with the aim of increasing the efficiency and accuracy of public safety planning, security activities, and decision support systems that are based on video integrated surveillance systems. The accuracy of results obtained from government-owned public safety infrastructure would improve greatly if privately owned surveillance systems ‘expose’ relevant video-generated metadata events, such as triggered alerts and also permit query of a metadata repository. Subsequently, a police officer, for example, with an appropriate level of system permission can query unified video systems across a large geographical area such as a city or a country to predict the location of an interesting entity, such as a pedestrian or a vehicle. This becomes possible with our proposed novel hierarchical architecture, the Fused Video Surveillance Architecture (FVSA). At the high level, FVSA comprises of a hardware framework that is supported by a multi-layer abstraction software interface. It presents video surveillance systems as an adapted computational grid of intelligent services, which is integration-enabled to communicate with other compatible systems in the Internet of Things (IoT)

    Ethical Implications of Predictive Risk Intelligence

    open access articleThis paper presents a case study on the ethical issues that relate to the use of Smart Information Systems (SIS) in predictive risk intelligence. The case study is based on a company that is using SIS to provide predictive risk intelligence in supply chain management (SCM), insurance, finance and sustainability. The pa-per covers an assessment of how the company recognises ethical concerns related to SIS and the ways it deals with them. Data was collected through a document review and two in-depth semi-structured interviews. Results from the case study indicate that the main ethical concerns with the use of SIS in predictive risk intelli-gence include protection of the data being used in predicting risk, data privacy and consent from those whose data has been collected from data providers such as so-cial media sites. Also, there are issues relating to the transparency and accountabil-ity of processes used in predictive intelligence. The interviews highlighted the issue of bias in using the SIS for making predictions for specific target clients. The last ethical issue was related to trust and accuracy of the predictions of the SIS. In re-sponse to these issues, the company has put in place different mechanisms to ensure responsible innovation through what it calls Responsible Data Science. Under Re-sponsible Data Science, the identified ethical issues are addressed by following a code of ethics, engaging with stakeholders and ethics committees. This paper is important because it provides lessons for the responsible implementation of SIS in industry, particularly for start-ups. The paper acknowledges ethical issues with the use of SIS in predictive risk intelligence and suggests that ethics should be a central consideration for companies and individuals developing SIS to create meaningful positive change for society

    Intelligent energy management using data mining techniques at Bosch Car Multimedia Portugal facilities

    The fusion of emerged technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing, big data, and the Internet of Things in manufacturing has pioneered this industry to meet the fourth stage of the industrial revolution (industry 4.0). One major approach to keeping this sector sustainable and productive is intelligent energy demand planning. Monitoring and controlling the consumption of energy under industry 4.0, directly results in minimizing the cost of operation and maximizing efficiency. To advance the research on the adoption of industry 4.0, this study examines CRISP-DM methodology to project data mining approach over data from 2020 to 2021 which was collected from industrial sensors to predict/forecast future electrical consumption at Bosch car multimedia facilities located at Braga, Portugal. Moreover, the influence of indicators such as humidity and temperature on electrical energy consumption was investigated. This study employed five promising regression algorithms and FaceBook prophet (FB prophet) to apply over data belonging to two HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) sensors (E333, 3260). Results indicate Random Forest (RF) algorithms as a potential regression approach for prediction and the outcome of FB prophet to forecast the demand of future usage of electrical energy associated with HVAC presented. Based on that, it was concluded that predicting the usage of electrical energy for both data points requires time series techniques.     Econometrics meets sentiment : an overview of methodology and applications

    The advent of massive amounts of textual, audio, and visual data has spurred the development of econometric methodology to transform qualitative sentiment data into quantitative sentiment variables, and to use those variables in an econometric analysis of the relationships between sentiment and other variables. We survey this emerging research field and refer to it as sentometrics, which is a portmanteau of sentiment and econometrics.     Performance Evaluation of Distributed Computing Environments with Hadoop and Spark Frameworks

    Recently, due to rapid development of information and communication technologies, the data are created and consumed in the avalanche way. Distributed computing create preconditions for analyzing and processing such Big Data by distributing the computations among a number of compute nodes. In this work, performance of distributed computing environments on the basis of Hadoop and Spark frameworks is estimated for real and virtual versions of clusters. As a test task, we chose the classic use case of word counting in texts of various sizes. It was found that the running times grow very fast with the dataset size and faster than a power function even. As to the real and virtual versions of cluster implementations, this tendency is the similar for both Hadoop and Spark frameworks. Moreover, speedup values decrease significantly with the growth of dataset size, especially for virtual version of cluster configuration. The problem of growing data generated by IoT and multimodal (visual, sound, tactile, neuro and brain-computing, muscle and eye tracking, etc.) interaction channels is presented.
