    The survival and development of connected TV in the context of three network convergence in China from 2008-2015

    With the development of digital technology, network technology and terminal technology, three network convergence (or triple play, referring to the way the telecommunication network, the broadcasting network and the Internet converge and develop together, connecting the three networks and sharing their resources in providing Internet access, TV and telephone services) is becoming more and more apparent in China from 2008 onwards. Chinese government has released a full suite of policies to promote the development of triple play. And triple play brings lots of convergence opportunities to the broadcasting, telecommunication and Internet. What does television, as one of the most important media, to make good use of triple play and to have a better future is the starting point and the objective of this research. This thesis analyses technical developments, management, market demand and the government policies influence on the development of television in the context of triple play in China, from 2008 to 2015. And it takes China Network Television (CNTV) as the case study; summarizes plenty of experiences and deficiencies. Moreover, it suggests development lines for the survival and development of connected TV in the context of triple play in China. The survival and development of connected TV in the context of triple play mainly involve contents and business, transmission channels, terminals and platforms and government supervision, etc. This research discuss questions such as, how to construct content and explore new business, how to develop transmission terminals and platforms, how to innovate management, how television can have a better development under the laws , the policies and the supervision of government. The suggestions included in the thesis to the survival and development of connected TV relate to the above four questions.Con el desarrollo de la tecnología digital, la tecnología de las redes y la tecnología de los terminales, la convergencia de las tres redes (o triple play; se refiere a la forma en que la red de telecomunicaciones, la red de radiodifusión e Internet convergen y se desarrollan juntos, conectándose las tres redes y compartiendo sus recursos en la prestación de servicios de acceso a Internet, TV y teléfono) es cada vez más visible en China desde 2008. El gobierno chino ha lanzado un conjunto de políticas para promover el desarrollo del triple play. El triple play comporta una serie de oportunidades de convergencia a la radiodifusión, telecomunicaciones e Internet. ¿Qué hace la televisión, como uno de los medios más importantes, para hacer un buen uso del triple play y para tener un mejor futuro? Este es el punto de partida y el objetivo de esta investigación. Esta tesis analiza la influencia de los avances técnicos, la gestión, la demanda del mercado y la políticas gubernamentales en el desarrollo de la televisión en el contexto del triple play en China entre 2008 y 2015. Y toma China Network Television (CNTV) como caso de estudio y resume sus experiencias y deficiencias. Por otra parte, en la tesis se sugieren líneas de desarrollo para la supervivencia y el desarrollo de la televisión conectada en el contexto del triple play en China. La supervivencia y el desarrollo de la televisión conectada en el contexto del triple play se refieren esencialmente a los contenidos y de negocios, canales de transmisión, terminales y plataformas, a la supervisión del gobierno, etc. En esta investigación se plantean, entre otras, las cuestiones siguientes: cómo construir contenido y explorar nuevos negocios, cómo desarrollar terminales y plataformas de transmisión, cómo innovar en la gestión, cómo la televisión puede tener un mejor desarrollo en virtud de las leyes, las políticas y la supervisión del gobierno. Las sugerencias que se proponen en la tesis para la supervivencia y el desarrollo de la televisión conectada hacen referencia a la cuatro cuestiones anteriores

    The methods that are described in this work enable highly efficient audio-visual streaming over wireless digital communication systems to an arbitrary number of receivers. In the focus of this thesis is thus point-to-multipoint transmission at constrained end-to-end delay. A fundamental difference as compared to point-to-point connections between exactly two communicating sending and receiving stations is in conveying information about successful or unsuccessful packet reception at the receiver side. The information to be transmitted is available at the sender, whereas the information about successful reception is only available to the receiver. Therefore, feedback about reception from the receiver to the sender is necessary. This information may be used for simple packet repetition in case of error, or adaptation of the bit rate of transmission to the momentary bit rate capacity of the channel, or both. This work focuses on the single transmission (including retransmissions) of data from one source to multiple destinations at the same time. A comparison with multi-receiver sequentially redundant transmission systems (simulcast MIMO) is made. With respect to feedback, this work considers time division multiple access systems, in which a single channel is used for data transmission and feedback. Therefore, the amount of time that can be spent for transmitting feedback is limited. An increase in time used for feedback transmissions from potentially many receivers results in a decrease in residual time which is usable for data transmission. This has direct impact on data throughput and hence, the quality of service. In the literature, an approach to reduce feedback overhead which is based on simultaneous feedback exists. In the scope of this work, simultaneous feedback implies equal carrier frequency, bandwidth and signal shape, in this case orthogonal frequency-division multiplex signals, during the event of the herein termed feedback aggregation in time. For this scheme, a constant amount of time is spent for feedback, independent of the number of receivers giving feedback about reception. Therefore, also data throughput remains independent of the number of receivers. This property of audio-visual digital transmission is taken for granted for statically configured, single purpose systems, such as terrestrial television. In the scope of this work are, however, multi-user and multi-purpose digital communication networks. Wireless LANs are a well-known example and are covered in detail herein. In suchlike systems, it is of great importance to remain independent of the number of receivers, as otherwise the service of ubiquitous digital connectivity is at the risk of being degraded. In this regard, the thesis at hand elaborates at what bit rates audio-visual transmission to multiple receivers may take place in conjunction with feedback aggregation. It is shown that the scheme achieves a multi-user throughput gain when used in conjunction with adaptivity of the bit rate to the channel. An assumption is the use of an ideal overlay packet erasure correcting code in this case. Furthermore, for delay constrained transmission, such as in so-called live television, throughput bit rates are examined. Applications have to be tolerant to a certain level of residual error in case of delay constrained transmission. Improvement of the rate adaptation algorithm is shown to increase throughput while residual error rates are decreased. Finally, with a consumer hardware prototype for digital live-TV re-distribution in the local wireless network, most of the mechanisms as described herein can be demonstrated.Die in vorliegender Arbeit aufgezeigten Methoden der paketbasierten drahtlosen digitalen Kommunikation ermöglichen es, Fernsehinhalte, aber auch audio-visuelle Datenströme im Allgemeinen, bei hoher Effizienz an beliebig große Gruppen von Empfängern zu verteilen. Im Fokus dieser Arbeit steht damit die Punkt- zu Mehrpunktübertragung bei begrenzter Ende-zu-Ende Verzögerung. Ein grundlegender Unterschied zur Punkt-zu-Punkt Verbindung zwischen genau zwei miteinander kommunizierenden Sender- und Empfängerstationen liegt in der Übermittlung der Information über erfolgreichen oder nicht erfolgreichen Paketempfang auf Seite der Empfänger. Da die zu übertragende Information am Sender vorliegt, die Information über den Erfolg der Übertragung jedoch ausschließlich beim jeweiligen Empfänger, muss eine Erfolgsmeldung auf dem Rückweg von Empfänger zu Sender erfolgen. Diese Information wird dann zum Beispiel zur einfachen Paketwiederholung im nicht erfolgreichen Fall genutzt, oder aber um die Übertragungsrate an die Kapazität des Kanals anzupassen, oder beides. Grundsätzlich beschäftigt sich diese Arbeit mit der einmaligen, gleichzeitigen Übertragung von Information (einschließlich Wiederholungen) an mehrere Empfänger, wobei ein Vergleich zu an mehrere Empfänger sequentiell redundant übertragenden Systemen (Simulcast MIMO) angestellt wird. In dieser Arbeit ist die Betrachtung bezüglich eines Rückkanals auf Zeitduplexsysteme beschränkt. In diesen Systemen wird der Kanal für Hin- und Rückweg zeitlich orthogonalisiert. Damit steht für die Übermittlung der Erfolgsmeldung eine beschränkte Zeitdauer zur Verfügung. Je mehr an Kanalzugriffszeit für die Erfolgsmeldungen der potentiell vielen Empfänger verbraucht wird, desto geringer wird die Restzeit, in der dann entsprechend weniger audio-visuelle Nutzdaten übertragbar sind, was sich direkt auf die Dienstqualität auswirkt. Ein in der Literatur weniger ausführlich betrachteter Ansatz ist die gleichzeitige Übertragung von Rückmeldungen mehrerer Teilnehmer auf gleicher Frequenz und bei identischer Bandbreite, sowie unter Nutzung gleichartiger Signale (hier: orthogonale Frequenzmultiplexsignalformung). Das Schema wird in dieser Arbeit daher als zeitliche Aggregation von Rückmeldungen, engl. feedback aggregation, bezeichnet. Dabei wird, unabhängig von der Anzahl der Empfänger, eine konstante Zeitdauer für Rückmeldungen genutzt, womit auch der Datendurchsatz durch zusätzliche Empfänger nicht notwendigerweise sinkt. Diese Eigenschaft ist aus statisch konfigurierten und für einen einzigen Zweck konzipierten Systemen, wie z. B. der terrestrischen Fernsehübertragung, bekannt. In dieser Arbeit werden im Gegensatz dazu jedoch am Beispiel von WLAN Mehrzweck- und Mehrbenutzersysteme betrachtet. Es handelt sich in derartigen Systemen zur digitalen Datenübertragung dabei um einen entscheidenden Vorteil, unabhängig von der Empfängeranzahl zu bleiben, da es sonst unweigerlich zu Einschränkungen in der Güte der angebotenen Dienstleistung der allgegenwärtigen digitalen Vernetzung kommen muss. Vorliegende Arbeit zeigt in diesem Zusammenhang auf, welche Datenraten unter Benutzung von feedback aggregation in der Verteilung an mehrere Empfänger und in verschiedenen Szenarien zu erreichen sind. Hierbei zeigt sich, dass das Schema im Zusammenspiel mit einer Adaption der Datenrate an den Übertragungskanal inhärent einen Datenratengewinn durch Mehrbenutzerempfang zu erzielen vermag, wenn ein überlagerter idealer Paketauslöschungsschutz-Code angenommen wird. Des weiteren wird bei der Übertragung mit zeitlich begrenzter Ausführungsdauer, z. B. dem sogenannten Live-Fernsehen, aufgezeigt, wie sich die erreichbare Datenrate reduziert und welche Restfehlertoleranz an die Übertragung gestellt werden muss. Hierbei wird ebenso aufgezeigt, wie sich durch Verbesserung der Ratenadaption erstere erhöhen und zweitere verringern lässt. An einem auf handelsüblichen Computer-Systemen realisiertem Prototypen zur Live-Fernsehübertragung können die hierin beschriebenen Mechanismen zu großen Teilen gezeigt werden

    Advanced random access techniques for satellite communications

    In this thesis, Advanced Random Access techniques for Satellite Communications are studied. In the last years, new advances in multi-access communication protocols together with the increasing need for bidirectional communications in consumer type of interactive satellite terminals have revived the interest for a set of schemes able to guarantee high-speed and low latency communications in bursty traffic conditions. In this work, starting from the latest findings on Aloha-based Random Access schemes, the optimization of such techniques and their use in closed-loop scenarios is investigated with particular regard to the Return Channel over Satellite of Digital Video Broadcasting. The thesis starts with a summary on the state of the art of Demand Assigned and Random Access techniques as well as on the recent evolution from the first to the second version of the Return Channel over Satellite of the Digital Video Broadcasting specification. In chapter 2 a stability and packet delay model for channel analysis and design are presented, showing that proper design through this tools can ensure high performance of the new access scheme. The use of control limit policies is also introduced and its use is thoroughly discussed both for finite and infinite users population showing that, differently from Slotted Aloha, in some cases static design over dynamic policies might be preferable if long propagation delay is present. In chapter 3 the same models and tools introduced for CRDSA are extended to the case of asynchronous Random Access schemes and a comparison of the two families of schemes is put in place demonstrating that asynchronous techniques are convenient only when the signal-to-noise ratio is high enough to ensure decodability of partially colliding packets. In chapter 4 a new access scheme currently patent pending is presented. In this scheme terminals access the channel in an unframed manner. It is shown that such a change brings improvements that further diminish latency due to immediate transmission of the first replica and further boost throughput because the number of loops on the corresponding bipartite graph representation is mitigated. The thesis concludes with a call for a new discussion of resource allocation in multi-access satellite communication scenarios such as DVB-RCS2 in light of the obtained results and of the new requirements in interactive satellite networks

    DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem and upstream channel simulation in MATLAB

    The cable television (CATV) industry has grown significantly since its inception in the late 1940’s. Originally, a CATV network was comprised of several homes that were connected to community antennae via a network of coaxial cables. The only signal processing done was by an analogue amplifier, and transmission only occurred in one direction (i.e. from the antennae/head-end to the subscribers). However, as CATV grew in popularity, demand for services such as pay-per-view television increased, which lead to supporting transmission in the upstream direction (i.e. from subscriber to the head-end). This greatly increased the signal processing to include frequency diplexers. CATV service providers began to expand the bandwidth of their networks in the late 90’s by switching from analogue to digital technology. In an effort to regulate the manufacturing of new digital equipment and ensure interoperability of products from different manufacturers, several cable service providers formed a non-for-profit consortium to develop a data-over-cable service interface specification (DOCSIS). The consortium, which is named CableLabs, released the first DOCSIS standard in 1997. The DOCSIS standard has been upgraded over the years to keep up with increased consumer demand for large bandwidths and faster transmission speeds, particularly in the upstream direction. The latest version of the DOCSIS standard, DOCSIS 3.1, utilizes orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) technology to provide upstream transmission speeds of up to 1 Gbps. As cable service providers begin the process of upgrading their upstream receivers to comply with the new DOCSIS 3.1 standard, they require a means of testing the various functions that an upstream receiver may employ. It is convenient for service providers to employ cable modem (CM) plus channel emulator to perform these tests in-house during the product development stage. Constructing the emulator in digital technology is an attractive option for testing. This thesis approaches digital emulation by developing a digital model of the CMs and upstream channel in a DOCSIS 3.1 network. The first step in building the emulator is to simulate its operations in MATLAB, specifically upstream transmission over the network. The MATLAB model is capable of simulating transmission from multiple CMs, each of which transmits using a specific “transmission mode.” The three transmission modes described in the DOCSIS 3.1 standard are included in the model. These modes are “traffic mode,” which is used during regular data transmission; “fine ranging mode,” which is used to perform fine timing and power offset corrections; and “probing” mode, which is presumably used for estimating the frequency response of the channel, but also is used to further correct the timing and power offsets. The MATLAB model is also capable of simulating the channel impairments a signal may encounter when traversing the upstream channel. Impairments that are specific to individual CMs include integer and fractional timing offsets, micro-reflections, carrier phase offset (CPO), fractional carrier frequency offset (CFO), and network gain/attenuation. Impairments common to all CMs include carrier hum modulation, AM/FM ingress noise, and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). It is the hope that the MATLAB scripts that make up the simulation be translated to Verilog HDL to implement the emulator on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) in the near future. In the event that an FPGA implementation is pursued, research was conducted into designing efficient fractional delay filters (FDFs), which are essential in the simulation of micro-reflections. After performing an FPGA implementation cost analysis between various FDF designs, it was determined that a Kaiser-windowed sinc function FDF with roll-off parameter β = 3.88 was the most cost-efficient choice, requiring at total of 24 multipliers when implemented using an optimized structure

    Unmet goals of tracking: within-track heterogeneity of students' expectations for

    Educational systems are often characterized by some form(s) of ability grouping, like tracking. Although substantial variation in the implementation of these practices exists, it is always the aim to improve teaching efficiency by creating homogeneous groups of students in terms of capabilities and performances as well as expected pathways. If students’ expected pathways (university, graduate school, or working) are in line with the goals of tracking, one might presume that these expectations are rather homogeneous within tracks and heterogeneous between tracks. In Flanders (the northern region of Belgium), the educational system consists of four tracks. Many students start out in the most prestigious, academic track. If they fail to gain the necessary credentials, they move to the less esteemed technical and vocational tracks. Therefore, the educational system has been called a 'cascade system'. We presume that this cascade system creates homogeneous expectations in the academic track, though heterogeneous expectations in the technical and vocational tracks. We use data from the International Study of City Youth (ISCY), gathered during the 2013-2014 school year from 2354 pupils of the tenth grade across 30 secondary schools in the city of Ghent, Flanders. Preliminary results suggest that the technical and vocational tracks show more heterogeneity in student’s expectations than the academic track. If tracking does not fulfill the desired goals in some tracks, tracking practices should be questioned as tracking occurs along social and ethnic lines, causing social inequality

    Eye quietness and quiet eye in expert and novice golf performance: an electrooculographic analysis

    Quiet eye (QE) is the final ocular fixation on the target of an action (e.g., the ball in golf putting). Camerabased eye-tracking studies have consistently found longer QE durations in experts than novices; however, mechanisms underlying QE are not known. To offer a new perspective we examined the feasibility of measuring the QE using electrooculography (EOG) and developed an index to assess ocular activity across time: eye quietness (EQ). Ten expert and ten novice golfers putted 60 balls to a 2.4 m distant hole. Horizontal EOG (2ms resolution) was recorded from two electrodes placed on the outer sides of the eyes. QE duration was measured using a EOG voltage threshold and comprised the sum of the pre-movement and post-movement initiation components. EQ was computed as the standard deviation of the EOG in 0.5 s bins from –4 to +2 s, relative to backswing initiation: lower values indicate less movement of the eyes, hence greater quietness. Finally, we measured club-ball address and swing durations. T-tests showed that total QE did not differ between groups (p = .31); however, experts had marginally shorter pre-movement QE (p = .08) and longer post-movement QE (p < .001) than novices. A group × time ANOVA revealed that experts had less EQ before backswing initiation and greater EQ after backswing initiation (p = .002). QE durations were inversely correlated with EQ from –1.5 to 1 s (rs = –.48 - –.90, ps = .03 - .001). Experts had longer swing durations than novices (p = .01) and, importantly, swing durations correlated positively with post-movement QE (r = .52, p = .02) and negatively with EQ from 0.5 to 1s (r = –.63, p = .003). This study demonstrates the feasibility of measuring ocular activity using EOG and validates EQ as an index of ocular activity. Its findings challenge the dominant perspective on QE and provide new evidence that expert-novice differences in ocular activity may reflect differences in the kinematics of how experts and novices execute skills
