    Science Models as Value-Added Services for Scholarly Information Systems

    The paper introduces scholarly Information Retrieval (IR) as a further dimension that should be considered in the science modeling debate. The IR use case is seen as a validation model of the adequacy of science models in representing and predicting structure and dynamics in science. Particular conceptualizations of scholarly activity and structures in science are used as value-added search services to improve retrieval quality: a co-word model depicting the cognitive structure of a field (used for query expansion), the Bradford law of information concentration, and a model of co-authorship networks (both used for re-ranking search results). An evaluation of the retrieval quality when science model driven services are used turned out that the models proposed actually provide beneficial effects to retrieval quality. From an IR perspective, the models studied are therefore verified as expressive conceptualizations of central phenomena in science. Thus, it could be shown that the IR perspective can significantly contribute to a better understanding of scholarly structures and activities.Comment: 26 pages, to appear in Scientometric

    Software tools for conducting bibliometric analysis in science: An up-to-date review

    Bibliometrics has become an essential tool for assessing and analyzing the output of scientists, cooperation between universities, the effect of state-owned science funding on national research and development performance and educational efficiency, among other applications. Therefore, professionals and scientists need a range of theoretical and practical tools to measure experimental data. This review aims to provide an up-to-date review of the various tools available for conducting bibliometric and scientometric analyses, including the sources of data acquisition, performance analysis and visualization tools. The included tools were divided into three categories: general bibliometric and performance analysis, science mapping analysis, and libraries; a description of all of them is provided. A comparative analysis of the database sources support, pre-processing capabilities, analysis and visualization options were also provided in order to facilitate its understanding. Although there are numerous bibliometric databases to obtain data for bibliometric and scientometric analysis, they have been developed for a different purpose. The number of exportable records is between 500 and 50,000 and the coverage of the different science fields is unequal in each database. Concerning the analyzed tools, Bibliometrix contains the more extensive set of techniques and suitable for practitioners through Biblioshiny. VOSviewer has a fantastic visualization and is capable of loading and exporting information from many sources. SciMAT is the tool with a powerful pre-processing and export capability. In views of the variability of features, the users need to decide the desired analysis output and chose the option that better fits into their aims

    Application of author bibliographic coupling analysis and author keywords ranking in identifying research fronts of Indian Neurosciences research

    Probing research fronts identification unfailingly delivers interesting results in any field due to its decisive nature. Citation analysis is an acclaimed method used in this process among which more successful results backing Author Co-citation Analysis (ACA) and Author Bibliographic Coupling Analysis (ABCA). The current study opted to combine author bibliographic coupling network analysis and author keywords to explore and display a graphical representation of prominent research areas’ evolution over the study period in Indian Neuroscience research domain. Application of hierarchical clustering to author bibliographic coupling networks for all non-overlapping consecutive years included in the study period were performed and analysed in VOSviewer mapping software. The powerful Lin/log modularity normalization was chosen for determining distance based similarity while clustering the network units. Results of the study unfolded ten prominent research subfields with more emphasis on Epilepsy’ and ‘Parkinson’s disease’ research. Depression was identified as one of the upcoming prominent area in recent years. Apart from its cruciality in framing national level mental health policies, the study will also prove ABCA to be an effective method in identifying prominent research areas

    Clusters and industrial districts: where is the literature going? Identifying emerging sub-fields of research

    Ingenio Working Paper SeriesThe industrial district and cluster literature has generated an extraordinary quantity of articles, debates, and topics for discussion, and encompasses one of the most vibrant lines of research in the field of economics, geography, management and related disciplines. The literature, however, is fairly fragmented. In this paper, bibliometric methods are used to analyze cluster literature published between 1957 and 2014 in order to explore prospective research priorities through the method of bibliographic coupling. Beyond focusing on foundational works in the past, this approach shifts the focus away from the practice of analyzing co-citations and seminal contributions to one of looking at current and emerging trends in the literature. Using the ISI-Web of Knowledge (Web of Science) as a database, examination of two samples of 3,955 and 2,419 articles is made. Results reveal the existence of sub-fields of inquiry that are following their own particular research agendas, which remain distinct yet interconnected to one another.N

    A Bibliometric Analysis on the state of the art of Neuromarketing research in Web of Science

    Neuromarketing is an ever-evolving field and as such it is important to have an image on where we stand today regarding research about it. In order to study the state of the art of neuromarketing research in Web of Science, we carried out a bibliometric analysis with Vosviewer software. Using the keyword “neuromarketing” as the only search term, we retrieved 184 scientific articles from the Web of Science of Core Collection. We carried out all 5 possible types of analyses allowed on Vosviewer: co-authorship, co-occurrence, citation, bibliographic coupling, and co-citation. The results show that the United States is at the forefront of the field, having the most citations and published documents alongside being the most popular country for co-authored works, and also being the country most involved in citations. Most of the countries heavily involved in neuromarketing research are from Europe, with England being the most involved. Regarding the articles themselves, the most popular keywords are those related to research fields, other than neuromarketing, such as neuroscience, neuroeconomics, advertising, consumer decisions, among others. Likewise, the most popular journals for neuromarketing articles are those in the fields marketing, consumer behavior, psychology, neuroscience, etc. Other results show that the most popular cited journals are from the United States while the most popular cited authors are from Europe
