As the arrays become larger, the far-field assumption is increasingly being violated and curvature of the wavefront should be taken into account.     Random Access in Massive MIMO by Exploiting Timing Offsets and Excess Antennas

    Massive MIMO systems, where base stations are equipped with hundreds of antennas, are an attractive way to handle the rapid growth of data traffic. As the number of user equipments (UEs) increases, the initial access and handover in contemporary networks will be flooded by user collisions. In this paper, a random access protocol is proposed that resolves collisions and performs timing estimation by simply utilizing the large number of antennas envisioned in Massive MIMO networks. UEs entering the network perform spreading in both time and frequency domains, and their timing offsets are estimated at the base station in closed-form using a subspace decomposition approach. This information is used to compute channel estimates that are subsequently employed by the base station to communicate with the detected UEs. The favorable propagation conditions of Massive MIMO suppress interference among UEs whereas the inherent timing misalignments improve the detection capabilities of the protocol. Numerical results are used to validate the performance of the proposed procedure in cellular networks under uncorrelated and correlated fading channels. With 2.5×1032.5\times10^3 UEs that may simultaneously become active with probability 1\% and a total of 1616 frequency-time codes (in a given random access block), it turns out that, with 100100 antennas, the proposed procedure successfully detects a given UE with probability 75\% while providing reliable timing estimates.Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, submitted to Transactions on Communication

    Cooperative Position and Orientation Estimation with Multi-Mode Antennas

    Robotic multi-agent systems are envisioned for planetary exploration and terrestrial applications. Autonomous operation of robots requires estimations of their positions and orientations, which are obtained from the direction-of-arrival (DoA) and the time-of-arrival (ToA) of radio signals exchanged among the agents. In this thesis, we estimate the signal DoA and ToA using a multi-mode antenna (MMA). An MMA is a single antenna element, where multiple orthogonal current modes are excited by different antenna ports. We provide a first study on the use of MMAs for cooperative position and orientation estimation, specifically exploring their DoA estimation capabilities. Assuming the agents of a cooperative network are equipped with MMAs, lower bounds on the achievable position and orientation accuracy are derived. We realize a gap between the theoretical lower bounds and real-world performance of a cooperative radio localization system, which is caused by imperfect antenna and transceiver calibration. Consequentially, we theoretically analyze in-situ antenna calibration, introduce an algorithm for the calibration of arbitrary multiport antennas and show its effectiveness by simulation. To also improve calibration during operation, we propose cooperative simultaneous localization and calibration (SLAC). We show that cooperative SLAC is able to estimate antenna responses and ranging biases of the agents together with their positions and orientations, leading to considerably better position and orientation accuracy. Finally, we validate the results from theory and simulation by experiments with robotic rovers equipped with software-defined radios (SDRs). In conclusion, we show that DoA estimation with an MMA is feasible, and accuracy can be improved by in-situ calibration and SLAC

    Massive MIMO is a Reality -- What is Next? Five Promising Research Directions for Antenna Arrays

    Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) is no longer a "wild" or "promising" concept for future cellular networks - in 2018 it became a reality. Base stations (BSs) with 64 fully digital transceiver chains were commercially deployed in several countries, the key ingredients of Massive MIMO have made it into the 5G standard, the signal processing methods required to achieve unprecedented spectral efficiency have been developed, and the limitation due to pilot contamination has been resolved. Even the development of fully digital Massive MIMO arrays for mmWave frequencies - once viewed prohibitively complicated and costly - is well underway. In a few years, Massive MIMO with fully digital transceivers will be a mainstream feature at both sub-6 GHz and mmWave frequencies. In this paper, we explain how the first chapter of the Massive MIMO research saga has come to an end, while the story has just begun. The coming wide-scale deployment of BSs with massive antenna arrays opens the door to a brand new world where spatial processing capabilities are omnipresent. In addition to mobile broadband services, the antennas can be used for other communication applications, such as low-power machine-type or ultra-reliable communications, as well as non-communication applications such as radar, sensing and positioning.     Investigation of Non-coherent Discrete Target Range Estimation Techniques for High-precision Location

    Ranging is an essential and crucial task for radar systems. How to solve the range-detection problem effectively and precisely is massively important. Meanwhile, unambiguity and high resolution are the points of interest as well. Coherent and non-coherent techniques can be applied to achieve range estimation, and both of them have advantages and disadvantages. Coherent estimates offer higher precision but are more vulnerable to noise and clutter and phase wrap errors, particularly in a complex or harsh environment, while the non-coherent approaches are simpler but provide lower precision. With the purpose of mitigating inaccuracy and perturbation in range estimation, miscellaneous techniques are employed to achieve optimally precise detection. Numerous elegant processing solutions stemming from non-coherent estimate are now introduced into the coherent realm, and vice versa. This thesis describes two non-coherent ranging estimate techniques with novel algorithms to mitigate the instinct deficit of non-coherent ranging approaches. One technique is based on peak detection and realised by Kth-order Polynomial Interpolation, while another is based on Z-transform and realised by Most-likelihood Chirp Z-transform. A two-stage approach for the fine ranging estimate is applied to the Discrete Fourier transform domain of both algorithms. An N-point Discrete Fourier transform is implemented to attain a coarse estimation; an accurate process around the point of interest determined in the first stage is conducted. For KPI technique, it interpolates around the peak of Discrete Fourier transform profiles of the chirp signal to achieve accurate interpolation and optimum precision. For Most-likelihood Chirp Z-transform technique, the Chirp Z-transform accurately implements the periodogram where only a narrow band spectrum is processed. Furthermore, the concept of most-likelihood estimator is introduced to combine with Chirp Z-transform to acquire better ranging performance. Cramer-Rao lower bound is presented to evaluate the performance of these two techniques from the perspective of statistical signal processing. Mathematical derivation, simulation modelling, theoretical analysis and experimental validation are conducted to assess technique performance. Further research will be pushed forward to algorithm optimisation and system development of a location system using non-coherent techniques and make a comparison to a coherent approach

    LFM based Wideband DOA Estimation using Deep Neural Network at Low SNR

    This work focuses on deep learning-based wideband direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation for a wideband in particular LFM in case of extreme noise. We propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) that utilizes the correlation matrix to estimate and trained using multi-channel data in low SNR conditions. By using a systematic approach and treating the problem as a way to identify multiple possible DoAs, the CNN is trained to predict DoAs under different SNR conditions. This allows the CNN to accurately estimate the directions from which signals are coming, regardless of the level of noise in the environment. The architecture proposed exhibits robustness to noise, works effectively with a small number of snapshots, and achieves high resolution in angle estimation. Experimental findings demonstrate notable enhancements in performance under low SNR conditions when compared to existing methods, without the need for parameter tuning for correlated and uncorrelated sources.
