    First-principles investigation of the Ni-Fe-Al system

    By combining ab-initio electron theory and statistical mechanics, the physical properties of the ternary intermetallic system Ni-Fe-Al in the ground state and at finite temperatures were investigated. The Ni-Fe-Al system is not only of high technological interest, but exhibits also rich physics, e.g., a delicate interplay between structure and magnetism over a wide composition range and substantial electronic correlations which is challenging for modern electronic structure methods. The new Stuttgart ab-initio mixed-basis pseudopotential code in the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) was used to determine the energetics in the ground state. Therewith, in combination with the cluster expansion (CE) method a representation of the energy landscape at TT=0 over the whole Gibbs triangle was elaborated. At finite temperatures, the cluster variation method (CVM) in tetrahedron approximation was employed in order to calculate the ab-initio ternary phase diagram on the bcc and fcc lattice. Thereby, a miscibility gap in the ternary B2 phase was theoretically verified.Comment: 27 page

    Analysis of offshore wind turbine operation & maintenance using a novel time domain meteo-ocean modeling approach

    This paper presents a novel approach to repair modeling using a time domain Auto-Regressive model to represent meteo-ocean site conditions. The short term hourly correlations, medium term access windows of periods up to days and the annual distibution of site data are captured. In addition, seasonality is included. Correlation observed between wind and wave site can be incorporated if simultaneous data exists. Using this approach a time series for both significant wave height and mean wind speed is described. This allows MTTR to be implemented within the reliability simulation as a variable process, dependent on significant wave height. This approach automatically captures site characteristics including seasonality and allows for complex analysis using time dependent constaints such as working patterns to be implemented. A simple cost model for lost revenues determined by the concurrent simulated wind speed is also presented. A preliminary investigation of the influence of component reliability and access thresholds at various existing sites on availability is presented demonstrating the abiltiy of the modeling approach to offer new insights into offshore wind turbine operation and maintenance

    Anomaly Detection Based on Indicators Aggregation

    Automatic anomaly detection is a major issue in various areas. Beyond mere detection, the identification of the source of the problem that produced the anomaly is also essential. This is particularly the case in aircraft engine health monitoring where detecting early signs of failure (anomalies) and helping the engine owner to implement efficiently the adapted maintenance operations (fixing the source of the anomaly) are of crucial importance to reduce the costs attached to unscheduled maintenance. This paper introduces a general methodology that aims at classifying monitoring signals into normal ones and several classes of abnormal ones. The main idea is to leverage expert knowledge by generating a very large number of binary indicators. Each indicator corresponds to a fully parametrized anomaly detector built from parametric anomaly scores designed by experts. A feature selection method is used to keep only the most discriminant indicators which are used at inputs of a Naive Bayes classifier. This give an interpretable classifier based on interpretable anomaly detectors whose parameters have been optimized indirectly by the selection process.     Improving Aircraft Engines Prognostics and Health Management via Anticipated Model-Based Validation of Health Indicators

    The aircraft engines manufacturing industry is subjected to many dependability constraints from certification authorities and economic background. In particular, the costs induced by unscheduled maintenance and delays and cancellations impose to ensure a minimum level of availability. For this purpose, Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) is used as a means to perform online periodic assessment of the engines’ health status. The whole PHM methodology is based on the processing of some variables reflecting the system’s health status named Health Indicators. The collecting of HI is an on-board embedded task which has to be specified before the entry into service for matters of retrofit costs. However, the current development methodology of PHM systems is considered as a marginal task in the industry and it is observed that most of the time, the set of HI is defined too late and only in a qualitative way. In this paper, the authors propose a novel development methodology for PHM systems centered on an anticipated model-based validation of HI. This validation is based on the use of uncertainties propagation to simulate the distributions of HI including the randomness of parameters. The paper defines also some performance metrics and criteria for the validation of the HI set. Eventually, the methodology is applied to the development of a PHM solution for an aircraft engine actuation loop. It reveals a lack of performance of the original set of HI and allows defining new ones in order to meet the specifications before the entry into service

    Deep Space Network information system architecture study

    The purpose of this article is to describe an architecture for the Deep Space Network (DSN) information system in the years 2000-2010 and to provide guidelines for its evolution during the 1990s. The study scope is defined to be from the front-end areas at the antennas to the end users (spacecraft teams, principal investigators, archival storage systems, and non-NASA partners). The architectural vision provides guidance for major DSN implementation efforts during the next decade. A strong motivation for the study is an expected dramatic improvement in information-systems technologies, such as the following: computer processing, automation technology (including knowledge-based systems), networking and data transport, software and hardware engineering, and human-interface technology. The proposed Ground Information System has the following major features: unified architecture from the front-end area to the end user; open-systems standards to achieve interoperability; DSN production of level 0 data; delivery of level 0 data from the Deep Space Communications Complex, if desired; dedicated telemetry processors for each receiver; security against unauthorized access and errors; and highly automated monitor and control

    Masses, luminosities, and orbital coplanarities of the µ Orionis quadruple-star system from phases differential astrometry

    μ Orionis was identified by spectroscopic studies as a quadruple-star system. Seventeen high-precision differential astrometry measurements of μ Ori have been collected by the Palomar High-precision Astrometric Search for Exoplanet Systems (PHASES). These show both the motion of the long-period binary orbit and short-period perturbations superimposed on that caused by each of the components in the long-period system being themselves binaries. The new measurements enable the orientations of the long-period binary and short-period subsystems to be determined. Recent theoretical work predicts the distribution of relative inclinations between inner and outer orbits of hierarchical systems to peak near 40 and 140 degrees. The degree of coplanarity of this complex system is determined, and the angle between the planes of the A–B and Aa–Ab orbits is found to be 136.7 ± 8.3 degrees, near the predicted distribution peak at 140 degrees; this result is discussed in the context of the handful of systems with established mutual inclinations. The system distance and masses for each component are obtained from a combined fit of the PHASES astrometry and archival radial velocity observations. The component masses have relative precisions of 5% (component Aa), 15% (Ab), and 1.4% (each of Ba and Bb). The median size of the minor axes of the uncertainty ellipses for the new measurements is 20 micro-arcseconds (μas). Updated orbits for δ Equulei, κ Pegasi, and V819 Herculis are also presented
