Betweenness and Diversity in Journal Citation Networks as Measures of Interdisciplinarity -- A Tribute to Eugene Garfield --
Journals were central to Eugene Garfield's research interests. Among other
things, journals are considered as units of analysis for bibliographic
databases such as the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus. In addition to
disciplinary classifications of journals, journal citation patterns span
networks across boundaries to variable extents. Using betweenness centrality
(BC) and diversity, we elaborate on the question of how to distinguish and rank
journals in terms of interdisciplinarity. Interdisciplinarity, however, is
difficult to operationalize in the absence of an operational definition of
disciplines, the diversity of a unit of analysis is sample-dependent. BC can be
considered as a measure of multi-disciplinarity. Diversity of co-citation in a
citing document has been considered as an indicator of knowledge integration,
but an author can also generate trans-disciplinary--that is,
non-disciplined--variation by citing sources from other disciplines. Diversity
in the bibliographic coupling among citing documents can analogously be
considered as diffusion of knowledge across disciplines. Because the citation
networks in the cited direction reflect both structure and variation, diversity
in this direction is perhaps the best available measure of interdisciplinarity
at the journal level. Furthermore, diversity is based on a summation and can
therefore be decomposed, differences among (sub)sets can be tested for
statistical significance. In an appendix, a general-purpose routine for
measuring diversity in networks is provided
Iberoamerica using journal co-citation analysis: a comparative study based on Scopus and Web of Science
In this study, the intellectual structure of the Iberoamerican research on Library and Information Science was visualized, from the perspective of journal citation relations. In addition, the core journals that most influence intellectual structure were identified. The study had a comparative emphasis since data from Scopus and Web of Science Core Collection were used. Journal co-citation maps were generated to identify the journal communities. Strategic diagrams with citation and betweenness centrality measures were also generated to identify core, under development, and peripheral journals. The results showed that the intellectual structure is fragmented into communities that respond to the geographic context and language affinity. Only two journals are considered core, El Profesional de la Información and Ciência da Informação. In general, there was not much difference in the comparative analyzes between the two databases. Complementary studies are necessary to show which epistemic factors influence the current fragmentation of the intellectual structure of the Library and Information Science research in the region
Redes de citación de revistas iberoamericanas de Bibliotecología y Ciencia de la Información en Scopus
Objective. The citation networks of the Ibero-American journals of library and information science (LIS) were analyzed, in order to distinguish their internal interrelationships within the scientific structure of the discipline in the region.
Design/Methodology/Approach. A co-citation analysis of journals was carried out from the documents of 20 Ibero-American journals indexed in Scopus, from 1996 to 2017. Node clustering techniques were used to examine the predominant communities in the intellectual structure of the discipline. A strategic diagram was constructed based on betweenness and citation measures to classify the journals according to their interdisciplinarity and impact.
Results/Discussion. The intellectual structure of LIS in Ibero-America has three main communities: the Portuguese-speaking, the Spanish, and the Latin American Spanish-speaking. The greatest co-citation relations are of internal type in the clusters. An inbreeding of the journals and their countries of origin is appreciated. The journals forming the core of the discipline are Ciência da Informação and El Profesional de la Información. It also highlights the mediating role played by the journal Investigación Bibliotecológica to connect the three communities.
Conclusions. There is evidence of a disciplinary fragmentation in the Ibero-American research on LIS, which is permeated by the language and geographical origin of the journals.
Originality/Value. This study is an updated approach that shows the current state of the intellectual structure of LIS in Ibero-America, based on the citation relations of the journals in the region

"The scientometric evolution of the "network society": mapping and tracing the influence of a concept
Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Statistics and Information Management, specialization in Information Analysis and ManagementThe “Network Society” is an analytical concept developed by the sociologist Manuel Castells. The
author applies this term to describe a new form of social organisation, global and dynamic, which was
emerging in the end of the 20th century. The Network Society is underpinned by microelectronics,
driven by software and based on flows of information. Castells explains its influence at many levels,
namely in communication and the economy. Since its introduction in the 1990s, it has framed much of
academic research and policy-relevant worldviews when it comes to define and understand the
contemporary digital ways. By 2021, the world has become more digitally dependent than ever and
the connectivity between different societal realms achieves an increasing relevance.
This work inquiries how Castells’ concept of Network Society was received by academic communities.
The main goals are to uncover how it has evolved in terms of meaning and appropriation. Considering
the multifaceted nature of this concept, we investigate a possible theoretical road which might have
led to its emergence. Afterwards, a peer-reviewed paper analysis is applied and bibliometric evidence
is used to map the field structure of academic work related to the Network Society. We aim at
unpacking a specific concept and pursue its evolution. We embrace a rather different approach from
those commonly undertaken in bibliometric research, which refer to the study of authors or disciplines.
We find that two moments can be distinguished in what concerns the use of the string “Network
Society” as an indicator. From 2000 to 2009, three communities are identified in terms of intellectual
structure: one dedicated to the Social Sciences in general, another one to studies of power, control,
and surveillance, and finally one devoted to Geography. From 2010 to 2020, a change in discourse
happens, a greater focus on digital and decision-making matters takes shape and a branch dedicated
to the online sphere comes into prominence. The 2000s display a stronger impact in terms of citations,
whereas the “take-off” in production itself takes place in the 2010s. The Network Society moves in a
multidisciplinary panorama but Sociology and Communication disciplines remain at the core research
areas. Castells assumes a central position in this body of literature but authorship is heterogeneous
and fragmented, i.e., the term is almost exclusively appropriated by researchers without strong links
outside their closed circles. The most impactful papers are related to governance and policy-making.
The concept seems to be portrayed as a tool for analysing global but also local and specific issues
