CHORUS Deliverable 2.1: State of the Art on Multimedia Search Engines
Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective.
The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines.
From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research
CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in
multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year.
In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio-
economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown
of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on
requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the
community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our
Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as
National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core
technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research
challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal
challenges
READ-BAD: A New Dataset and Evaluation Scheme for Baseline Detection in Archival Documents
Text line detection is crucial for any application associated with Automatic
Text Recognition or Keyword Spotting. Modern algorithms perform good on
well-established datasets since they either comprise clean data or
simple/homogeneous page layouts. We have collected and annotated 2036 archival
document images from different locations and time periods. The dataset contains
varying page layouts and degradations that challenge text line segmentation
methods. Well established text line segmentation evaluation schemes such as the
Detection Rate or Recognition Accuracy demand for binarized data that is
annotated on a pixel level. Producing ground truth by these means is laborious
and not needed to determine a method's quality. In this paper we propose a new
evaluation scheme that is based on baselines. The proposed scheme has no need
for binarization and it can handle skewed as well as rotated text lines. The
ICDAR 2017 Competition on Baseline Detection and the ICDAR 2017 Competition on
Layout Analysis for Challenging Medieval Manuscripts used this evaluation
scheme. Finally, we present results achieved by a recently published text line

Ground Truth for Layout Analysis Performance Evaluation
Over the past two decades a significant number of layout analysis (page segmentation and region classification) approaches have been proposed in the literature. Each approach has been devised for and/or evaluated using (usually small) application-specific datasets. While the need for objective performance evaluation of layout analysis algorithms is evident, there does not exist a suitable dataset with ground truth that reflects the realities of everyday documents (widely varying layouts, complex entities, colour, noise etc.). The most significant impediment is the creation of accurate and flexible (in representation) ground truth, a task that is costly and must be carefully designed. This paper discusses the issues related to the design, representation and creation of ground truth in the context of a realistic dataset developed by the authors. The effectiveness of the ground truth discussed in this paper has been successfully shown in its use for two international page segmentation competitions (ICDAR2003 and ICDAR2005)
Anveshak - A Groundtruth Generation Tool for Foreground Regions of Document Images
We propose a graphical user interface based groundtruth generation tool in
this paper. Here, annotation of an input document image is done based on the
foreground pixels. Foreground pixels are grouped together with user interaction
to form labeling units. These units are then labeled by the user with the user
defined labels. The output produced by the tool is an image with an XML file
containing its metadata information. This annotated data can be further used in
