    Multi-User Low Intrusive Occupancy Detection

    Smart spaces are those that are aware of their state and can act accordingly. Among the central elements of such a state is the presence of humans and their number. For a smart office building, such information can be used for saving energy and safety purposes. While acquiring presence information is crucial, using sensing techniques that are highly intrusive, such as cameras, is often not acceptable for the building occupants. In this paper, we illustrate a proposal for occupancy detection which is low intrusive; it is based on equipment typically available in modern offices such as room-level power-metering and an app running on workers’ mobile phones. For power metering, we collect the aggregated power consumption and disaggregate the load of each device. For the mobile phone, we use the Received Signal Strength (RSS) of BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) nodes deployed around workspaces to localize the phone in a room. We test the system in our offices. The experiments show that sensor fusion of the two sensing modalities gives 87–90% accuracy, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed approach

    Data Fusion for Materials Location Estimation in Construction

    Effective automated tracking and locating of the thousands of materials on construction sites improves material distribution and project performance and thus has a significant positive impact on construction productivity. Many locating technologies and data sources have therefore been developed, and the deployment of a cost-effective, scalable, and easy-to-implement materials location sensing system at actual construction sites has very recently become both technically and economically feasible. However, considerable opportunity still exists to improve the accuracy, precision, and robustness of such systems. The quest for fundamental methods that can take advantage of the relative strengths of each individual technology and data source motivated this research, which has led to the development of new data fusion methods for improving materials location estimation. In this study a data fusion model is used to generate an integrated solution for the automated identification, location estimation, and relocation detection of construction materials. The developed model is a modified functional data fusion model. Particular attention is paid to noisy environments where low-cost RFID tags are attached to all materials, which are sometimes moved repeatedly around the site. A portion of the work focuses partly on relocation detection because it is closely coupled with location estimation and because it can be used to detect the multi-handling of materials, which is a key indicator of inefficiency. This research has successfully addressed the challenges of fusing data from multiple sources of information in a very noisy and dynamic environment. The results indicate potential for the proposed model to improve location estimation and movement detection as well as to automate the calculation of the incidence of multi-handling

    Context classification for service robots

    This dissertation presents a solution for environment sensing using sensor fusion techniques and a context/environment classification of the surroundings in a service robot, so it could change his behavior according to the different rea-soning outputs. As an example, if a robot knows he is outdoors, in a field environment, there can be a sandy ground, in which it should slow down. Contrariwise in indoor environments, that situation is statistically unlikely to happen (sandy ground). This simple assumption denotes the importance of context-aware in automated guided vehicles

    Task-Driven Integrity Assessment and Control for Vehicular Hybrid Localization Systems

    Throughout the last decade, vehicle localization has been attracting significant attention in a wide range of applications, including Navigation Systems, Road Tolling, Smart Parking, and Collision Avoidance. To deliver on their requirements, these applications need specific localization accuracy. However, current localization techniques lack the required accuracy, especially for mission critical applications. Although various approaches for improving localization accuracy have been reported in the literature, there is still a need for more efficient and more effective measures that can ascribe some level of accuracy to the localization process. These measures will enable localization systems to manage the localization process and resources so as to achieve the highest accuracy possible, and to mitigate the impact of inadequate accuracy on the target application. In this thesis, a framework for fusing different localization techniques is introduced in order to estimate the location of a vehicle along with location integrity assessment that captures the impact of the measurement conditions on the localization quality. Knowledge about estimate integrity allows the system to plan the use of its localization resources so as to match the target accuracy of the application. The framework introduced provides the tools that would allow for modeling the impact of the operation conditions on estimate accuracy and integrity, as such it enables more robust system performance in three steps. First, localization system parameters are utilized to contrive a feature space that constitutes probable accuracy classes. Due to the strong overlap among accuracy classes in the feature space, a hierarchical classification strategy is developed to address the class ambiguity problem via the class unfolding approach (HCCU). HCCU strategy is proven to be superior with respect to other hierarchical configuration. Furthermore, a Context Based Accuracy Classification (CBAC) algorithm is introduced to enhance the performance of the classification process. In this algorithm, knowledge about the surrounding environment is utilized to optimize classification performance as a function of the observation conditions. Second, a task-driven integrity (TDI) model is developed to enable the applications modules to be aware of the trust level of the localization output. Typically, this trust level functions in the measurement conditions; therefore, the TDI model monitors specific parameter(s) in the localization technique and, accordingly, infers the impact of the change in the environmental conditions on the quality of the localization process. A generalized TDI solution is also introduced to handle the cases where sufficient information about the sensing parameters is unavailable. Finally, the produce of the employed localization techniques (i.e., location estimates, accuracy, and integrity level assessment) needs to be fused. Nevertheless, these techniques are hybrid and their pieces of information are conflicting in many situations. Therefore, a novel evidence structure model called Spatial Evidence Structure Model (SESM) is developed and used in constructing a frame of discernment comprising discretized spatial data. SESM-based fusion paradigms are capable of performing a fusion process using the information provided by the techniques employed. Both the location estimate accuracy and aggregated integrity resultant from the fusion process demonstrate superiority over the employing localization techniques. Furthermore, a context aware task-driven resource allocation mechanism is developed to manage the fusion process. The main objective of this mechanism is to optimize the usage of system resources and achieve a task-driven performance. Extensive experimental work is conducted on real-life and simulated data to validate models developed in this thesis. It is evident from the experimental results that task-driven integrity assessment and control is applicable and effective on hybrid localization systems

    Uncertainty Minimization in Robotic 3D Mapping Systems Operating in Dynamic Large-Scale Environments

    This dissertation research is motivated by the potential and promise of 3D sensing technologies in safety and security applications. With specific focus on unmanned robotic mapping to aid clean-up of hazardous environments, under-vehicle inspection, automatic runway/pavement inspection and modeling of urban environments, we develop modular, multi-sensor, multi-modality robotic 3D imaging prototypes using localization/navigation hardware, laser range scanners and video cameras. While deploying our multi-modality complementary approach to pose and structure recovery in dynamic real-world operating conditions, we observe several data fusion issues that state-of-the-art methodologies are not able to handle. Different bounds on the noise model of heterogeneous sensors, the dynamism of the operating conditions and the interaction of the sensing mechanisms with the environment introduce situations where sensors can intermittently degenerate to accuracy levels lower than their design specification. This observation necessitates the derivation of methods to integrate multi-sensor data considering sensor conflict, performance degradation and potential failure during operation. Our work in this dissertation contributes the derivation of a fault-diagnosis framework inspired by information complexity theory to the data fusion literature. We implement the framework as opportunistic sensing intelligence that is able to evolve a belief policy on the sensors within the multi-agent 3D mapping systems to survive and counter concerns of failure in challenging operating conditions. The implementation of the information-theoretic framework, in addition to eliminating failed/non-functional sensors and avoiding catastrophic fusion, is able to minimize uncertainty during autonomous operation by adaptively deciding to fuse or choose believable sensors. We demonstrate our framework through experiments in multi-sensor robot state localization in large scale dynamic environments and vision-based 3D inference. Our modular hardware and software design of robotic imaging prototypes along with the opportunistic sensing intelligence provides significant improvements towards autonomous accurate photo-realistic 3D mapping and remote visualization of scenes for the motivating applications

    Positioning algorithms for RFID-based multi-sensor indoor/outdoor positioning techniques

    Position information has been very important. People need this information almost everywhere all the time. However, it is a challenging task to provide precise positions indoor/outdoor seamlessly. Outdoor positioning has been widely studied and accurate positions can usually be achieved by well developed GPS techniques. However, these techniques are difficult to be used indoor since GPS signals are too weak to be received. The alternative techniques, such as inertial sensors and radio-based pseudolites, can be used for indoor positioning but have limitations. For example, the inertial sensors suffer from drifting problems caused by the accumulating errors of measured acceleration and velocity and the radio-based techniques are prone to the obstructions and multipath effects of the transmitted signals. It is therefore necessary to develop improved methods for minimising the limitations of the current indoor positioning techniques and providing an adequately precise solution of the indoor positioning and seamless indoor/outdoor positioning. The main objectives of this research are to investigate and develop algorithms for the low-cost and portable indoor personal positioning system using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based multi-sensor techniques, such as integrating with Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Inertial Navigation System (INS) and/or GPS. A RFID probabilistic Cell of Origin (CoO) algorithm is developed, which is superior to the conventional CoO positioning algorithm in its positioning accuracy and continuity. Integration algorithms are also developed for RFID-based multi-sensor positioning techniques, which can provide metre-level positioning accuracy for dynamic personal positioning indoors. In addition, indoor/outdoor seamless positioning algorithms are investigated based on the iterated Reduced Sigma Point Kalman Filter (RSPKF) for RFID/MEMS INS/low-cost GPS integrated technique, which can provide metre-level positioning accuracy for personal positioning. 3-D GIS assisted personal positioning algorithms are also developed, including the map matching algorithm based on the probabilistic maps for personal positioning and the Site Specific (SISP) propagation model for efficiently generating the RFID signal strength distributions in location fingerprinting algorithms. Both static and dynamic indoor positioning experiments have been conducted using the RFID and RFID/MEMS INS integrated techniques. Metre-level positioning accuracy is achieved (e.g. 3.5m in rooms and 1.5m in stairways for static position, 4m for dynamic positioning and 1.7m using the GIS assisted positioning algorithms). Various indoor/outdoor experiments have been conducted using the RFID/MEMS INS/low-cost GPS integrated technique. It indicates that the techniques selected in this study, integrated with the low-cost GPS, can be used to provide continuous indoor/outdoor positions in approximately 4m accuracy with the iterated RSPKF. The results from the above experiments have demonstrated the improvements of integrating multiple sensors with RFID and utilizing the 3-D GIS data for personal positioning. The algorithms developed can be used in a portable RFID based multi-sensor positioning system to achieve metre-level accuracy in the indoor/outdoor environments. The proposed system has potential applications, such as tracking miners underground, monitoring athletes, locating first responders, guiding the disabled and providing other general location based services (LBS)

    Self–organised multi agent system for search and rescue operations

    Autonomous multi-agent systems perform inadequately in time critical missions, while they tend to explore exhaustively each location of the field in one phase with out selecting the pertinent strategy. This research aims to solve this problem by introducing a hierarchy of exploration strategies. Agents explore an unknown search terrain with complex topology in multiple predefined stages by performing pertinent strategies depending on their previous observations. Exploration inside unknown, cluttered, and confined environments is one of the main challenges for search and rescue robots inside collapsed buildings. In this regard we introduce our novel exploration algorithm for multi–agent system, that is able to perform a fast, fair, and thorough search as well as solving the multi–agent traffic congestion. Our simulations have been performed on different test environments in which the complexity of the search field has been defined by fractal dimension of Brownian movements. The exploration stages are depicted as defined arenas of National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST). NIST introduced three scenarios of progressive difficulty: yellow, orange, and red. The main concentration of this research is on the red arena with the least structure and most challenging parts to robot nimbleness

    Precision autonomous underwater navigation

As science requirements and engineering capabilities converge, navigating in the sensor-limited ocean remains a fundamental challenge. Despite the logistical cost, the standards of archaeological survey necessitate using fixed acoustic transponders - an instrumented navigation environment. This thesis focuses on the problems particular to operating precisely within such an environment by developing a design method and a navigation algorithm. Responsible documentation, through remote sensing images, distinguishes archaeology from salvage, and fine-resolution imaging demands precision navigation. This thesis presents a design process for making component and algorithm level tradeoffs to achieve system-level performance satisfying the archaeological standard. A specification connects the functional requirements of archaeological survey with the design parameters of precision navigation. Tools based on estimation fundamentals - the Cram6r-Rao lower bound and the extended Kalman filter - predict the system-level precision of candidate designs. Non-dimensional performance metrics generalize the analysis results. Analyzing a variety of factors and levels articulates the key tradeoffs: sensor selection, acoustic beacon configuration, algorithm selection, etc. The abstract analysis is made concrete by designing a survey and navigation system for an expedition to image the USS Monitor. Hypothesis grid (Hgrid) is both a representation of the sensed environment and an algorithm for building the representation. Range observations measuring the line-of-sight distance between two acoustic transducers are subject to multipath errors and spurious returns.The quality of this measurement is dependent on the location of the estimator. Hgrids characterize the measurement quality by generating a priori association probabilities - the belief that subsequent measurements will correspond to the direct-path, a multipath, or an outlier - as a function of the estimated location. The algorithm has three main components: the mixed-density sensor model using Gaussian and uniform probability distributions, the measurement classification and multipath model identification using expectation-maximization (EM), and the grid-based spatial representation.     Indoor location identification technologies for real-time IoT-based applications: an inclusive survey

    YesThe advent of the Internet of Things has witnessed tremendous success in the application of wireless sensor networks and ubiquitous computing for diverse smart-based applications. The developed systems operate under different technologies using different methods to achieve their targeted goals. In this treatise, we carried out an inclusive survey on key indoor technologies and techniques, with to view to explore their various benefits, limitations, and areas for improvement. The mathematical formulation for simple localization problems is also presented. In addition, an empirical evaluation of the performance of these indoor technologies is carried out using a common generic metric of scalability, accuracy, complexity, robustness, energy-efficiency, cost and reliability. An empirical evaluation of performance of different RF-based technologies establishes the viability of Wi-Fi, RFID, UWB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, and Light over other indoor technologies for reliable IoT-based applications. Furthermore, the survey advocates hybridization of technologies as an effective approach to achieve reliable IoT-based indoor systems. The findings of the survey could be useful in the selection of appropriate indoor technologies for the development of reliable real-time indoor applications.
