Behavioural Models for Distributed Fractal Components
This paper presents a formal behavioural specification framework together with its applications in different contexts for specifying and verifying the correct behaviour of distributed Fractal components. Our framework allows us to build behavioural models for applications ranging from sequential Fractal components, to distributed objects, and finally distributed components. Our models are able to characterise both functional and non-functional behaviours, and the interaction between the two concerns. Finally, this work has resulted in the development of tools allowing the non-expert programmer to specify the behaviour of his components, and automatically, or semi-automatically verify properties of his application

Toward a Formal Semantics for Autonomic Components
Autonomic management can improve the QoS provided by parallel/ distributed
applications. Within the CoreGRID Component Model, the autonomic management is
tailored to the automatic - monitoring-driven - alteration of the component
assembly and, therefore, is defined as the effect of (distributed) management
code. This work yields a semantics based on hypergraph rewriting suitable to
model the dynamic evolution and non-functional aspects of Service Oriented
Architectures and component-based autonomic applications. In this regard, our
main goal is to provide a formal description of adaptation operations that are
typically only informally specified. We contend that our approach makes easier
to raise the level of abstraction of management code in autonomic and adaptive
applications.Comment: 11 pages + cover pag
Multilevel Contracts for Trusted Components
This article contributes to the design and the verification of trusted
components and services. The contracts are declined at several levels to cover
then different facets, such as component consistency, compatibility or
correctness. The article introduces multilevel contracts and a
design+verification process for handling and analysing these contracts in
component models. The approach is implemented with the COSTO platform that
supports the Kmelia component model. A case study illustrates the overall
approach.Comment: In Proceedings WCSI 2010, arXiv:1010.233
Advanced Grid programming with components: a biometric identification case study
Component-oriented software development has been attracting increasing attention for building complex distributed applications. A new infrastructure supporting this advanced concept is our prototype component framework based on the Grid component model. This paper provides an overview of the component framework and presents a case study where we utilise the component-oriented approach to develop a business process application for a biometric identification system. We then introduce the tools being developed as part of an integrated development environment to enable graphical component-based development of Grid applications. Finally, we report our initial findings and experiences of efficiently using the component framework and set of software tools
A Framework for Agile Development of Component-Based Applications
Agile development processes and component-based software architectures are
two software engineering approaches that contribute to enable the rapid
building and evolution of applications. Nevertheless, few approaches have
proposed a framework to combine agile and component-based development, allowing
an application to be tested throughout the entire development cycle. To address
this problematic, we have built CALICO, a model-based framework that allows
applications to be safely developed in an iterative and incremental manner. The
CALICO approach relies on the synchronization of a model view, which specifies
the application properties, and a runtime view, which contains the application
in its execution context. Tests on the application specifications that require
values only known at runtime, are automatically integrated by CALICO into the
running application, and the captured needed values are reified at execution
time to resume the tests and inform the architect of potential problems. Any
modification at the model level that does not introduce new errors is
automatically propagated to the running system, allowing the safe evolution of
the application. In this paper, we illustrate the CALICO development process
with a concrete example and provide information on the current implementation
of our framework
Antifragility = Elasticity + Resilience + Machine Learning: Models and Algorithms for Open System Fidelity
We introduce a model of the fidelity of open systems - fidelity being
interpreted here as the compliance between corresponding figures of interest in
two separate but communicating domains. A special case of fidelity is given by
real-timeliness and synchrony, in which the figure of interest is the physical
and the system's notion of time. Our model covers two orthogonal aspects of
fidelity, the first one focusing on a system's steady state and the second one
capturing that system's dynamic and behavioural characteristics. We discuss how
the two aspects correspond respectively to elasticity and resilience and we
highlight each aspect's qualities and limitations. Finally we sketch the
elements of a new model coupling both of the first model's aspects and
complementing them with machine learning. Finally, a conjecture is put forward
that the new model may represent a first step towards compositional criteria
for antifragile systems.Comment: Preliminary version submitted to the 1st International Workshop "From

Contract Aware Components, 10 years after
The notion of contract aware components has been published roughly ten years
ago and is now becoming mainstream in several fields where the usage of
software components is seen as critical. The goal of this paper is to survey
domains such as Embedded Systems or Service Oriented Architecture where the
notion of contract aware components has been influential. For each of these
domains we briefly describe what has been done with this idea and we discuss
the remaining challenges.Comment: In Proceedings WCSI 2010, arXiv:1010.233
