    Creating, Metavoicing, and Propagating: A Road Map for Understanding User Roles in Computational Advertising

    Over the past two decades, everyday users have become a prominent force in the advertising landscape. They actively participate in conversations with and about brands by creating, amplifying, and interacting with brand-related messages. These user activities generate large volumes of structured and unstructured data that advertisers can mine to understand consumer interests and preferences. In this article, we survey insights from the user-generated content literature through the computational advertising lens to offer a road map for future research. Specifically, we discuss three roles that users play—as creators, metavoicers, and propagators. For each role, we present key research areas that can benefit from a computational approach, identify the opportunities and challenges, and propose questions for future research. We also discuss the practical implications of applying computational methods to study users and user-generated content for advertisers

    The effect of web advertising visual design on online purchase intention: An examination across gender

    With web advertising growing to be a huge industry, it is important to understand the effectiveness of web advertisement. In this study we investigate the effects of web advertising visual design (WAVD) purchasing intention within the framework of an integrated model. Nine hypotheses were developed and tested on a dataset of 316 observations collected via a questionnaire survey. The results of structural equation modeling (SEM) indicate that while web advertising visual cues influence consumers' purchasing intention through advertising attitudes and brand attitudes, they do not have direct effects on purchasing intention. Further results on the moderating role of gender suggest that web advertising visual cues have direct effect on consumers' purchasing intention for male groups but not for female groups. This study contributes to the understanding the role of visual dimensions in forming online purchase intentions

    The Effect of In-Store TV on Customer-Based Brand Equity

    The purpose of the study is to provide empirical evidence if the exposure to in-store TV in retail stores does effect customer-based brand equity of the advertised product. A cross-sectional research design and a deductive approach to theory are used. The quantitative data consists of structured observations and structured interviews with a sample size of n=169. A control group was used to be able to compare brand equity levels. The findings indicate that in-store TV can in fact influence customer-based brand equity. A causal relationship between the two objects of study is confirmed. The brand equity dimension that showed a significant impact is uniqueness

    Creating brands online: third party opinions and their effect on consumers\u27 trust in brands and purchase intentions

    Consumer lack of trust in online vendors and brands is identified as one of the biggest obstacles in the growth of e-commerce. This study examined how third-party product reviews help in building consumers’ trust, in consumers’ perception of product quality, their brand attitudes and consumers’ purchase intention. The six cell experimental design tested the effect of consumer and expert online product reviews on fictitious web sites for high-involvement and low-involvement products. The findings indicate that online consumer product reviews perform better than online expert product reviews and no product reviews. Online product reviews affected visitors to a web site with a high-involvement product the most. The study implies that online consumer product reviews significantly affect consumers in a high-involvement condition and are more effective than online expert product reviews
