    Using function approximation for personalized point-of-interest recommendation

    Point-of-interest (POI) recommender system encourages users to share their locations and social experience through check-ins in online location-based social networks. A most recent algorithm for POI recommendation takes into account both the location relevance and diversity. The relevance measures users’ personal preference while the diversity considers location categories. There exists a dilemma of weighting these two factors in the recommendation. The location diversity is weighted more when a user is new to a city and expects to explore the city in the new visit. In this paper, we propose a method to automatically adjust the weights according to user’s personal preference. We focus on investigating a function between the number of location categories and a weight value for each user, where the Chebyshev polynomial approximation method using binary values is applied. We further improve the approximation by exploring similar behavior of users within a location category. We conduct experiments on five real-world datasets, and show that the new approach can make a good balance of weighting the two factors therefore providing better recommendation

    Location-Based Social Networks: Latent Topics Mining and Hybrid Trust-Based Recommendation

    The rapid advances of the 4th generation mobile networks, social media and the ubiquity of the advanced mobile devices in which GPS modules are embedded have enabled the location-based services, especially the Location-Based Social Networks (LBSNs) such as Foursquare and Facebook Places. LBSNs have been attracting more and more users by providing services that integrate social activities with geographic information. In LBSNs, a user can explore places of interests around his current location, check in at these venues and also selectively share his check-ins with the public or his friends. LBSNs have accumulated large amounts of information related to personal or social activities along with their associated location information. Analyzing and mining LBSN information are important to understand human preferences related to locations and their mobility patterns. Therefore, in this thesis, we aim to understand the human mobility behavior and patterns based on huge amounts of information available on LBSNs and provide a hybrid trust-based POI recommendation for LBSN users. In this dissertation, we first carry out a comprehensive and quantitative analysis about venue popularity based on a cumulative dataset collected from greater Pittsburgh area in Foursquare. It provides a general understanding of the online population's preferences on locations. Then, we employ a probabilistic graphical model to mine the check-in dataset to discover the local geographic topics that capture the potential and intrinsic relations among the locations in accordance with users' check-in histories. We also investigate the local geographic topics with different temporal aspects. Moreover, we explore the geographic topics based on travelers' check-ins. The proposed approach for mining the latent geographic topics successfully addresses the challenges of understanding location preferences of groups of users. Lastly, we focus on individual user's preferences of locations and propose a hybrid trust-based POI recommendation algorithm in this thesis. The proposed approach integrates the trust based on both users' social relationship and users' check-in behavior to provide POI recommendations. We implement the proposed hybrid trust-based recommendation algorithm and evaluate it based on the Foursquare dataset and the experimental results show good performances of our proposed algorithm

    Three Essays on Friend Recommendation Systems for Online Social Networks

    Social networking sites (SNSs) first appeared in the mid-90s. In recent years, however, Web 2.0 technologies have made modern SNSs increasingly popular and easier to use, and social networking has expanded explosively across the web. This brought a massive number of new users. Two of the most popular SNSs, Facebook and Twitter, have reached one billion users and exceeded half billion users, respectively. Too many new users may cause the cold start problem. Users sign up on a SNS and discover they do not have any friends. Normally, SNSs solve this problem by recommending potential friends. The current major methods for friend recommendations are profile matching and “friends-of-friends.” The profile matching method compares two users’ profiles. This is relatively inflexible because it ignores the changing nature of users. It also requires complete profiles. The friends-of-friends method can only find people who are likely to be previously known to each other and neglects many users who share the same interests. To the best of my knowledge, existing research has not proposed guidelines for building a better recommendation system based on context information (location information) and user-generated content (UGC). This dissertation consists of three essays. The first essay focuses on location information and then develops a framework for using location to recommend friends--a framework that is not limited to making only known people recommendations but that also adds stranger recommendations. The second essay employs UGC by developing a text analytic framework that discovers users’ interests and personalities and uses this information to recommend friends. The third essay discusses friend recommendations in a certain type of online community – health and fitness social networking sites, physical activities and health status become more important factors in this case. Essay 1: Location-sensitive Friend Recommendations in Online Social Networks GPS-embedded smart devices and wearable devices such as smart phones, tablets, smart watches, etc., have significantly increased in recent years. Because of them, users can record their location at anytime and anyplace. SNSs such as Foursquare, Facebook, and Twitter all have developed their own location-based services to collect users’ location check-in data and provide location-sensitive services such as location-based promotions. None of these sites, however, have used location information to make friend recommendations. In this essay, we investigate a new model to make friend recommendations. This model includes location check-in data as predictors and calculates users’ check-in histories--users’ life patterns--to make friend recommendations. The results of our experiment show that this novel model provides better performance in making friend recommendations. Essay 2: Novel Friend Recommendations Based on User-generated Contents More and more users have joined and contributed to SNSs. Users share stories of their daily life (such as having delicious food, enjoying shopping, traveling, hanging out, etc.) and leave comments. This huge amount of UGC could provide rich data for building an accurate, adaptable, effective, and extensible user model that reflects users’ interests, their sentiments about different type of locations, and their personalities. From the computer-supported social matching process, these attributes could influence friend matches. Unfortunately, none of the previous studies in this area have focused on using these extracted meta-text features for friend recommendation systems. In this study, we develop a text analytic framework and apply it to UGCs on SNSs. By extracting interests and personality features from UGCs, we can make text-based friend recommendations. The results of our experiment show that text features could further improve recommendation performance. Essay 3: Friend Recommendations in Health/Fitness Social Networking Sites Thanks to the growing number of wearable devices, online health/fitness communities are becoming more and more popular. This type of social networking sites offers individuals the opportunity to monitor their diet process and motivating them to change their lifestyles. Users can improve their physical activity level and health status by receiving information, advice and supports from their friends in the social networks. Many studies have confirmed that social network structure and the degree of homophily in a network will affect how health behavior and innovations are spread. However, very few studies have focused on the opposite, the impact from users’ daily activities for building friendships in a health/fitness social networking site. In this study, we track and collect users’ daily activities from Record, a famous online fitness social networking sites. By building an analytic framework, we test and evaluate how people’s daily activities could help friend recommendations. The results of our experiment have shown that by using the helps from these information, friend recommendation systems become more accurate and more precise

    Extracting user spatio-temporal profiles from location based social networks

    Report de RecercaLocation Based Social Networks (LBSN) like Twitter or Instagram are a good source for user spatio-temporal behavior. These social network provide a low rate sampling of user's location information during large intervals of time that can be used to discover complex behaviors, including mobility profiles, points of interest or unusual events. This information is important for different domains like mobility route planning, touristic recommendation systems or city planning. Other approaches have used the data from LSBN to categorize areas of a city depending on the categories of the places that people visit or to discover user behavioral patterns from their visits. The aim of this paper is to analyze how the spatio-temporal behavior of a large number of users in a well limited geographical area can be segmented in different profiles. These behavioral profiles are obtained by means of clustering algorithms that show the different behaviors that people have when living and visiting a city. The data analyzed was obtained from the public data feeds of Twitter and Instagram inside the area of the city of Barcelona for a period of several months. The analysis of these data shows that these kind of algorithms can be successfully applied to data from any city (or any general area) to discover useful profiles that can be described on terms of the city singular places and areas and their temporal relationships.     Joint Geographical and Temporal Modeling based on Matrix Factorization for Point-of-Interest Recommendation

    With the popularity of Location-based Social Networks, Point-of-Interest (POI) recommendation has become an important task, which learns the users' preferences and mobility patterns to recommend POIs. Previous studies show that incorporating contextual information such as geographical and temporal influences is necessary to improve POI recommendation by addressing the data sparsity problem. However, existing methods model the geographical influence based on the physical distance between POIs and users, while ignoring the temporal characteristics of such geographical influences. In this paper, we perform a study on the user mobility patterns where we find out that users' check-ins happen around several centers depending on their current temporal state. Next, we propose a spatio-temporal activity-centers algorithm to model users' behavior more accurately. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed contextual model by incorporating it into the matrix factorization model under two different settings: i) static and ii) temporal. To show the effectiveness of our proposed method, which we refer to as STACP, we conduct experiments on two well-known real-world datasets acquired from Gowalla and Foursquare LBSNs. Experimental results show that the STACP model achieves a statistically significant performance improvement, compared to the state-of-the-art techniques. Also, we demonstrate the effectiveness of capturing geographical and temporal information for modeling users' activity centers and the importance of modeling them jointly.Comment: To be appear in ECIR 202

    A Study of User Activity Patterns and the Effect of Venue Types on City Dynamics Using Location-Based Social Network Data

    The main purpose of this research is to study the effect of various types of venues on the density distribution of residents and model check-in data from a Location-Based Social Network for the city of Shanghai, China by using combination of multiple temporal, spatial and visualization techniques by classifying users’ check-ins into different venue categories. This article investigates the use of Weibo for big data analysis and its efficiency in various categories instead of manually collected datasets, by exploring the relation between time, frequency, place and category of check-in based on location characteristics and their contributions. The data used in this research was acquired from a famous Chinese microblogs called Weibo, which was preprocessed to get the most significant and relevant attributes for the current study and transformed into Geographical Information Systems format, analyzed and, finally, presented with the help of graphs, tables and heat maps. The Kernel Density Estimation was used for spatial analysis. The venue categorization was based on nature of the physical locations within the city by comparing the name of venue extracted from Weibo dataset with the function such as education for schools or shopping for malls and so on. The results of usage patterns from hours to days, venue categories and frequency distribution into these categories as well as the density of check-in within the Shanghai and contribution of each venue category in its diversity are thoroughly demonstrated, uncovering interesting spatio-temporal patterns including frequency and density of users from different venues at different time intervals, and significance of using geo-data from Weibo to study human behavior in variety of studies like education, tourism and city dynamics based on location-based social networks. Our findings uncover various aspects of activity patterns in human behavior, the significance of venue classes and its effects in Shanghai, which can be applied in pattern analysis, recommendation systems and other interactive applications for these classes.</jats:p
