    Behavior specification in a software design system

    A technique for software system behavior specification appropriate for use in designing systems with concurrency is presented. The technique is based upon a generalized ability to define events, or significant occurrences in a software system, and then indicate whatever constraints the designer might wish to see imposed upon the ordering or simultaneity of those events. Constructs implementing this technique in the DREAM software design system are presented and illustrated.     Methodology for object-oriented real-time systems analysis and design: Software engineering

    Successful application of software engineering methodologies requires an integrated analysis and design life-cycle in which the various phases flow smoothly 'seamlessly' from analysis through design to implementation. Furthermore, different analysis methodologies often lead to different structuring of the system so that the transition from analysis to design may be awkward depending on the design methodology to be used. This is especially important when object-oriented programming is to be used for implementation when the original specification and perhaps high-level design is non-object oriented. Two approaches to real-time systems analysis which can lead to an object-oriented design are contrasted: (1) modeling the system using structured analysis with real-time extensions which emphasizes data and control flows followed by the abstraction of objects where the operations or methods of the objects correspond to processes in the data flow diagrams and then design in terms of these objects; and (2) modeling the system from the beginning as a set of naturally occurring concurrent entities (objects) each having its own time-behavior defined by a set of states and state-transition rules and seamlessly transforming the analysis models into high-level design models. A new concept of a 'real-time systems-analysis object' is introduced and becomes the basic building block of a series of seamlessly-connected models which progress from the object-oriented real-time systems analysis and design system analysis logical models through the physical architectural models and the high-level design stages. The methodology is appropriate to the overall specification including hardware and software modules. In software modules, the systems analysis objects are transformed into software objects

    SystemC Model Generation for Realistic Simulation of Networked Embedded Systems

    Verification and design-space exploration of today's embedded systems require the simulation of heterogeneous aspects of the system, i.e., software, hardware, communications. This work shows the use of SystemC to simulate a model-driven specification of the behavior of a networked embedded system together with a complete network scenario consisting of the radio channel, the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol for wireless personal area networks and concurrent traffic sharing the medium. The paper describes the main issues addressed to generate SystemC modules from Matlab/Stateflow descriptions and to integrate them in a complete network scenario. Simulation results on a healthcare wireless sensor network show the validity of the approach

    An Instance-Based Structured Object Oriented Method for Co-Analysis/Co-Design of Concurrent Embedded Systems

    The current object-oriented class-based approaches to hardware/software co-analysis/co-design of embedded systems are limited in their abilities to properly capture the structure of individual instances of hardware and software components and their interactions. This paper discusses a methodology to extend a structured objectoriented hardware/software co-design methodology based on the High Order Object-oriented Modeling Technique (HOOMT) to incorporate instance-based object and behavioral models. The instance-based structured object-oriented methodology will enable description of a system\u27s structure based on individual instances of hardware and software components and specification of the interactions among them. In addition, lattices are introduced to specify the concurrent behavior of hardware/software components in a concurrent embedded system. These additions further enhance the method\u27s capability of providing a precise set of specifications that can be understood easily by both hardware and software designers in co-analysis/codesign. The methodology has been applied to the specification of hardware and software of a simulated advanced power grid control system

    We describe the database requirements of SEED (Software Environment to Support the Early Phases in Building Design). The requirements are typical for a database that intends to support a heterogeneous design support environment consisting of independent software modules with diverse internal design models, requirements not met by any commercial database system. The design and implementation of this database is an integral part of the overall software engineering effort. We describe the SEED approach that integrates external and in-house software based on a shared information model specified in the modeling language SPROUT, which allows for the specification of domains, and classes, relationship types and their behavior, and multiple classifications.     Towards Generic Monitors for Object-Oriented Real-Time Maude Specifications

    Non-Functional Properties (NFPs) are crucial in the design of software. Specification of systems is used in the very first phases of the software development process for the stakeholders to make decisions on which architecture or platform to use. These specifications may be an- alyzed using different formalisms and techniques, simulation being one of them. During a simulation, the relevant data involved in the anal- ysis of the NFPs of interest can be measured using monitors. In this work, we show how monitors can be parametrically specified so that the instrumentation of specifications to be monitored can be automatically performed. We prove that the original specification and the automati- cally obtained specification with monitors are bisimilar by construction. This means that the changes made on the original system by adding monitors do not affect its behavior. This approach allows us to have a library of possible monitors that can be safely added to analyze different properties, possibly on different objects of our systems, at will.Universidad de Málaga, Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech.     Embedded Systems Requirements Verification Using HiLeS Designer

    International audienceOne of the issues related to systems design is the early verification in first design steps: system specifications verification. Nowadays, it is common to use text-based specifications to begin a system design. However, these specifications cannot be verified until a software model is made. In this work, we show how can we use HiLeS Designer to model and verify, formally and by simulation an embedded system specification. This tool makes easier to build the model, using graphical concepts which are familiar to designers. It also helps to verify formally the structure and some logical behavior, and by simulation, it is possible to verify the consistence of the embedded system specification.     Meta-Data and Interface Synthesis Techniques for Improving Design Productivity in Reconfigurable Computing

    This paper demonstrates improvements in design productivity for reconfigurable computing which are accomplished through a novel IP reuse strategy. It presents a set of extensions to the IP-XACT XML specification that define the temporal behavior of cores and describes how these extensions are used in the Ogre synthesis system to simplify design complexity and thereby reduce design time. Design productivity improvement is demonstrated by reducing design time for software radio designs from days to hours
