    Normalized Power Prior Bayesian Analysis

    Get PDF
The elicitation of power prior distributions is based on the availability of historical data, and is realized by raising the likelihood function of the historical data to a fractional power. However, an arbitrary positive constant before the like- lihood function of the historical data could change the inferential results when one uses the original power prior. This raises a question that which likelihood function should be used, one from raw data, or one from a su±cient-statistics. We propose a normalized power prior that can better utilize the power parameter in quantifying the heterogeneity between current and historical data. Furthermore, when the power parameter is random, the optimality of the normalized power priors is shown in the sense of maximizing Shannon's mutual information. Some comparisons between the original and the normalized power prior approaches are made and a water-quality monitoring data is used to show that the normalized power prior is more sensible.Bayesian analysis, historical data, normalized power prior, power prior, prior elicitation, Shannon's mutual information.

Modeshapes recognition using Fourier descriptors: a simple SHM example

    Get PDF
The main objective of this study is to develop an alternative criterion for modeshape classification, as the currently available one, MAC (Modal Assurance Criteria), is only a vector correlation representing modeshape similarities. This new method is developed to provide a set of features (Fourier Descriptors) for comparing modeshapes with “local” similarities of higher interest than “global” similarities using nodal lines. These lines are able to characterize modeshapes very easily. So when damage occurs, we are able to track the few descriptors changes to localise the damage. We validated our method on a CFCF plate demonstrating the quality of the damage localisation and possible use in a “mode tracking” application (space structure)

Interference modalities for interaction and performance design

    Get PDF
While interactive media and its interfaces are susceptible to interference on technical and human dimensions, this is rarely considered by theoretical models found in the literature for describing or designing interactive settings and interfaces. This research explores modalities of interference as it affects agency in interactive and performative settings, by analysing a selection of artworks where this phenomenon becomes evident. As observed through the works discussed, modalities of interference redefine successful interaction as discovery of new potential, providing wider latitude for creative expression and collaborative engagement. Paths towards an aesthetics of interference are found on practical and conceptual levels. Challenges are identified, such as the difficulty in mastering highly variable interference, its cumulative increase, and the impossibility of anticipating the full spectrum of possible interference. As an agent for increased affordance generation and wider operational ability, on technical and cognitive levels, interference is demonstrated to be a factor of required consideration for a more informed observation and configuration of interactive and performative experiences
