Training a Feed-forward Neural Network with Artificial Bee Colony Based Backpropagation Method
Back-propagation algorithm is one of the most widely used and popular
techniques to optimize the feed forward neural network training. Nature
inspired meta-heuristic algorithms also provide derivative-free solution to
optimize complex problem. Artificial bee colony algorithm is a nature inspired
meta-heuristic algorithm, mimicking the foraging or food source searching
behaviour of bees in a bee colony and this algorithm is implemented in several
applications for an improved optimized outcome. The proposed method in this
paper includes an improved artificial bee colony algorithm based
back-propagation neural network training method for fast and improved
convergence rate of the hybrid neural network learning method. The result is
analysed with the genetic algorithm based back-propagation method, and it is
another hybridized procedure of its kind. Analysis is performed over standard
data sets, reflecting the light of efficiency of proposed method in terms of
convergence speed and rate.Comment: 14 Pages, 11 figure
Quantifying the Impact of Parameter Tuning on Nature-Inspired Algorithms
The problem of parameterization is often central to the effective deployment
of nature-inspired algorithms. However, finding the optimal set of parameter
values for a combination of problem instance and solution method is highly
challenging, and few concrete guidelines exist on how and when such tuning may
be performed. Previous work tends to either focus on a specific algorithm or
use benchmark problems, and both of these restrictions limit the applicability
of any findings. Here, we examine a number of different algorithms, and study
them in a "problem agnostic" fashion (i.e., one that is not tied to specific
instances) by considering their performance on fitness landscapes with varying
characteristics. Using this approach, we make a number of observations on which
algorithms may (or may not) benefit from tuning, and in which specific
circumstances.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Accepted at the European Conference on Artificial

A social spider algorithm for global optimization
The growing complexity of real-world problems has motivated computer scientists to search for efficient problem-solving methods. Metaheuristics based on evolutionary computation and swarm intelligence are outstanding examples of nature-inspired solution techniques. Inspired by the social spiders, we propose a novel social spider algorithm to solve global optimization problems. This algorithm is mainly based on the foraging strategy of social spiders, utilizing the vibrations on the spider web to determine the positions of preys. Different from the previously proposed swarm intelligence algorithms, we introduce a new social animal foraging strategy model to solve optimization problems. In addition, we perform preliminary parameter sensitivity analysis for our proposed algorithm, developing guidelines for choosing the parameter values. The social spider algorithm is evaluated by a series of widely used benchmark functions, and our proposed algorithm has superior performance compared with other state-of-the-art metaheuristics.postprin
Social Algorithms
This article concerns the review of a special class of swarm intelligence
based algorithms for solving optimization problems and these algorithms can be
referred to as social algorithms. Social algorithms use multiple agents and the
social interactions to design rules for algorithms so as to mimic certain
successful characteristics of the social/biological systems such as ants, bees,
bats, birds and animals.Comment: Encyclopedia of Complexity and Systems Science, 201
Swarm intelligence for scheduling: a review
Swarm Intelligence generally refers to a problem-solving ability that emerges from the
interaction of simple information-processing units. The concept of Swarm suggests multiplicity,
distribution, stochasticity, randomness, and messiness. The concept of Intelligence suggests that
problem-solving approach is successful considering learning, creativity, cognition capabilities. This paper
introduces some of the theoretical foundations, the biological motivation and fundamental aspects of
swarm intelligence based optimization techniques such Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Ant Colony
Optimization (ACO) and Artificial Bees Colony (ABC) algorithms for scheduling optimization
