Time-varying parametric modelling and time-dependent spectral characterisation with applications to EEG signals using multi-wavelets
A new time-varying autoregressive (TVAR) modelling approach is proposed for nonstationary signal processing and analysis, with application to EEG data modelling and power spectral estimation. In the new parametric modelling framework, the time-dependent coefficients of the TVAR model are represented using a novel multi-wavelet decomposition scheme. The time-varying modelling problem is then reduced to regression selection and parameter estimation, which can be effectively resolved by using a forward orthogonal regression algorithm. Two examples, one for an artificial signal and another for an EEG signal, are given to show the effectiveness and applicability of the new TVAR modelling method
Multiscale Bayesian State Space Model for Granger Causality Analysis of Brain Signal
Modelling time-varying and frequency-specific relationships between two brain
signals is becoming an essential methodological tool to answer heoretical
questions in experimental neuroscience. In this article, we propose to estimate
a frequency Granger causality statistic that may vary in time in order to
evaluate the functional connections between two brain regions during a task. We
use for that purpose an adaptive Kalman filter type of estimator of a linear
Gaussian vector autoregressive model with coefficients evolving over time. The
estimation procedure is achieved through variational Bayesian approximation and
is extended for multiple trials. This Bayesian State Space (BSS) model provides
a dynamical Granger-causality statistic that is quite natural. We propose to
extend the BSS model to include the \`{a} trous Haar decomposition. This
wavelet-based forecasting method is based on a multiscale resolution
decomposition of the signal using the redundant \`{a} trous wavelet transform
and allows us to capture short- and long-range dependencies between signals.
Equally importantly it allows us to derive the desired dynamical and
frequency-specific Granger-causality statistic. The application of these models
to intracranial local field potential data recorded during a psychological
experimental task shows the complex frequency based cross-talk between amygdala
and medial orbito-frontal cortex.

Bayesian Model Search for Nonstationary Periodic Time Series
We propose a novel Bayesian methodology for analyzing nonstationary time
series that exhibit oscillatory behaviour. We approximate the time series using
a piecewise oscillatory model with unknown periodicities, where our goal is to
estimate the change-points while simultaneously identifying the potentially
changing periodicities in the data. Our proposed methodology is based on a
trans-dimensional Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm that simultaneously
updates the change-points and the periodicities relevant to any segment between
them. We show that the proposed methodology successfully identifies time
changing oscillatory behaviour in two applications which are relevant to
e-Health and sleep research, namely the occurrence of ultradian oscillations in
human skin temperature during the time of night rest, and the detection of
instances of sleep apnea in plethysmographic respiratory traces.Comment: Received 23 Oct 2018, Accepted 12 May 201
Extraction of features from sleep EEG for Bayesian assessment of brain development
Brain development can be evaluated by experts analysing age-related patterns in sleep electroencephalograms (EEG). Natural variations in the patterns, noise, and artefacts affect the evaluation accuracy as well as experts' agreement. The knowledge of predictive posterior distribution allows experts to estimate confidence intervals within which decisions are distributed. Bayesian approach to probabilistic inference has provided accurate estimates of intervals of interest. In this paper we propose a new feature extraction technique for Bayesian assessment and estimation of predictive distribution in a case of newborn brain development assessment. The new EEG features are verified within the Bayesian framework on a large EEG data set including 1,100 recordings made from newborns in 10 age groups. The proposed features are highly correlated with brain maturation and their use increases the assessment accuracy
A new recursive algorithm for time-varying autoregressive (TVAR) model estimation and its application to speech analysis
This paper proposes a new state-regularized (SR) and QR decomposition based recursive least squares (QRRLS) algorithm with variable forgetting factor (VFF) for recursive coefficient estimation of time-varying autoregressive (AR) models. It employs the estimated coefficients as prior information to minimize the exponentially weighted observation error, which leads to reduced variance and bias over traditional regularized RLS algorithm. It also increases the tracking speed by introducing a new measure of convergence status to control the FF. Simulations using synthetic and real speech signals show that the proposed method has improved tracking performance and reduced estimation error variance than conventional TVAR modeling methods during rapid changing of AR coefficients. © 2012 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 2012 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS), Seoul, Korea, 20-23 May 2012.
