    Improving the performance of a radio-frequency localization system in adverse outdoor applications

    In outdoor RF localization systems, particularly where line of sight can not be guaranteed or where multipath effects are severe, information about the terrain may improve the position estimate's performance. Given the difficulties in obtaining real data, a ray-tracing fingerprint is a viable option. Nevertheless, although presenting good simulation results, the performance of systems trained with simulated features only suffer degradation when employed to process real-life data. This work intends to improve the localization accuracy when using ray-tracing fingerprints and a few field data obtained from an adverse environment where a large number of measurements is not an option. We employ a machine learning (ML) algorithm to explore the multipath information. We selected algorithms random forest and gradient boosting; both considered efficient tools in the literature. In a strict simulation scenario (simulated data for training, validating, and testing), we obtained the same good results found in the literature (error around 2 m). In a real-world system (simulated data for training, real data for validating and testing), both ML algorithms resulted in a mean positioning error around 100 ,m. We have also obtained experimental results for noisy (artificially added Gaussian noise) and mismatched (with a null subset of) features. From the simulations carried out in this work, our study revealed that enhancing the ML model with a few real-world data improves localization’s overall performance. From the machine ML algorithms employed herein, we also observed that, under noisy conditions, the random forest algorithm achieved a slightly better result than the gradient boosting algorithm. However, they achieved similar results in a mismatch experiment. This work’s practical implication is that multipath information, once rejected in old localization techniques, now represents a significant source of information whenever we have prior knowledge to train the ML algorithm

    Robust GNSS Carrier Phase-based Position and Attitude Estimation Theory and Applications

Among the existing technologies, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have established as the cornerstone for outdoor navigation, allowing for all-weather, all-time positioning and timing at a worldwide scale. GNSS is the generic term for referring to a constellation of satellites which transmit radio signals used primarily for ranging information. Therefore, the successful operation and deployment of prospective autonomous systems is subject to our capabilities to support GNSS in the provision of robust and precise navigational estimates. GNSS signals enable two types of ranging observations: –code pseudorange, which is a measure of the time difference between the signal’s emission and reception at the satellite and receiver, respectively, scaled by the speed of light; –carrier phase pseudorange, which measures the beat of the carrier signal and the number of accumulated full carrier cycles. While code pseudoranges provides an unambiguous measure of the distance between satellites and receiver, with a dm-level precision when disregarding atmospheric delays and clock offsets, carrier phase measurements present a much higher precision, at the cost of being ambiguous by an unknown number of integer cycles, commonly denoted as ambiguities. Thus, the maximum potential of GNSS, in terms of navigational precision, can be reach by the use of carrier phase observations which, in turn, lead to complicated estimation problems. This thesis deals with the estimation theory behind the provision of carrier phase-based precise navigation for vehicles traversing scenarios with harsh signal propagation conditions. Contributions to such a broad topic are made in three directions. First, the ultimate positioning performance is addressed, by proposing lower bounds on the signal processing realized at the receiver level and for the mixed real- and integer-valued problem related to carrier phase-based positioning. Second, multi-antenna configurations are considered for the computation of a vehicle’s orientation, introducing a new model for the joint position and attitude estimation problems and proposing new deterministic and recursive estimators based on Lie Theory. Finally, the framework of robust statistics is explored to propose new solutions to code- and carrier phase-based navigation, able to deal with outlying impulsive noises.La información de navegación es un elemental fundamental para el funcionamiento de sistemas de transporte inteligentes y plataformas robóticas. Entre las tecnologías existentes, los Sistemas Globales de Navegación por Satélite (GNSS) se han consolidado como la piedra angular para la navegación en exteriores, dando acceso a localización y sincronización temporal a una escala global, irrespectivamente de la condición meteorológica. GNSS es el término genérico que define una constelación de satélites que transmiten señales de radio, usadas primordinalmente para proporcionar información de distancia. Por lo tanto, la operatibilidad y funcionamiento de los futuros sistemas autónomos pende de nuestra capacidad para explotar GNSS y estimar soluciones de navegación robustas y precisas. Las señales GNSS permiten dos tipos de observaciones de alcance: –pseudorangos de código, que miden el tiempo transcurrido entre la emisión de las señales en los satélites y su acquisición en la tierra por parte de un receptor; –pseudorangos de fase de portadora, que miden la fase de la onda sinusoide que portan dichas señales y el número acumulado de ciclos completos. Los pseudorangos de código proporcionan una medida inequívoca de la distancia entre los satélites y el receptor, con una precisión de decímetros cuando no se tienen en cuenta los retrasos atmosféricos y los desfases del reloj. En contraposición, las observaciones de la portadora son super precisas, alcanzando el milímetro de exactidud, a expensas de ser ambiguas por un número entero y desconocido de ciclos. Por ende, el alcanzar la máxima precisión con GNSS queda condicionado al uso de las medidas de fase de la portadora, lo cual implica unos problemas de estimación de elevada complejidad. Esta tesis versa sobre la teoría de estimación relacionada con la provisión de navegación precisa basada en la fase de la portadora, especialmente para vehículos que transitan escenarios donde las señales no se propagan fácilmente, como es el caso de las ciudades. Para ello, primero se aborda la máxima efectividad del problema de localización, proponiendo cotas inferiores para el procesamiento de la señal en el receptor y para el problema de estimación mixto (es decir, cuando las incógnitas pertenecen al espacio de números reales y enteros). En segundo lugar, se consideran las configuraciones multiantena para el cálculo de la orientación de un vehículo, presentando un nuevo modelo para la estimación conjunta de posición y rumbo, y proponiendo estimadores deterministas y recursivos basados en la teoría de Lie.     Simultaneous Target and Multipath Positioning

    <p>In this work, we present the Simultaneous Target and Multipath Positioning (STAMP) technique to jointly estimate the unknown target position and uncertain multipath channel parameters. We illustrate the applications of STAMP for target tracking/geolocation problems using single-station hybrid TOA/AOA system, monostatic MIMO radar and multistatic range-based/AOA based localization systems. The STAMP algorithm is derived using a recursive Bayesian framework by including the target state and multipath channel parameters as a single random vector, and the unknown correspondence between observations and signal propagation channels is solved using the multi-scan multi-hypothesis data association. In the presence of the unknown time-varying number of multipath propagation modes, the STAMP algorithm is modified based on the single-cluster PHD filtering by modeling the multipath parameter state as a random finite set. In this case, the target state is defined as the parent process, which is updated by using a particle filter or multi-hypothesis Kalman filter. The multipath channel parameter is defined as the daughter process and updated based on an explicit Gaussian mixture PHD filter. Moreover, the idenfiability analysis of the joint estimation problem is provided in terms of Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB). The Fisher information contributed by each propagation mode is investigated, and the effect of Fisher information loss caused by the measurement origin uncertainty is also studied. The proposed STAMP algorithms are evaluated based on a set of illustrative numeric simulations and real data experiments with an indoor multi-channel radar testbed. Substantial improvement in target localization accuracy is observed.</p>Dissertatio

    Opportunistic Angle of Arrival Estimation in Impaired Scenarios

    This work if focused on the analysis and the development of Angle of Arrival (AoA) radio localization methods. The radio positioning system considered is constituted by a radio source and by a receiving array of antennas. The positioning algorithms treated in this work are designed to have a passive and opportunistic approach. The opportunistic attribute implies that the radio localization algorithms are designed to provide the AoA estimation with nearly-zero information on the transmitted signals. No training sequences or waveforms custom designed for localization are taken into account. The localization is termed passive since there is no collaboration between the transmitter and the receiver during the localization process. Then, the algorithms treated in this work are designed to eavesdrop already existing communication signals and to locate their radio source with nearly-zero knowledge of the signal and without the collaboration of the transmitting node. First of all, AoA radio localization algorithms can be classified in terms of involved signals (narrowband or broadband), antenna array pattern (L-shaped, circular, etc.), signal structure (sinusoidal, training sequences, etc.), Differential Time of Arrival (D-ToA) / Differential Phase of Arrival (D-PoA) and collaborative/non collaborative. Than, the most detrimental effects for radio communications are treated: the multipath (MP) channels and the impaired hardware. A geometric model for the MP is analysed and implemented to test the robustness of the proposed methods. The effects of MP on the received signals statistics from the AoA estimation point-of-view are discussed. The hardware impairments for the most common components are introduced and their effects in the AoA estimation process are analysed. Two novel algorithms that exploits the AoA from signal snapshots acquired sequentially with a time division approach are presented. The acquired signals are QAM waveforms eavesdropped from a pre-existing communication. The proposed methods, namely Constellation Statistical Pattern IDentification and Overlap (CSP-IDO) and Bidimensional CSP-IDO (BCID), exploit the probability density function (pdf) of the received signals to obtain the D-PoA. Both CSP-IDO and BCID use the statistical pattern of received signals exploiting the transmitter statistical signature. Since the presence of hardware impairments modify the statistical pattern of the received signals, CSP-IDO and BCID are able to exploit it to improve the performance with respect to (w.r.t.) the ideal case. Since the proposed methods can be used with a switched antenna architecture they are implementable with a reduced hardware contrariwise to synchronous methods like MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) that are not applicable. Then, two iterative AoA estimation algorithms for the dynamic tracking of moving radio sources are implemented. Statistical methods, namely PF, are used to implement the iterative tracking of the AoA from D-PoA measures in two different scenarios: automotive and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The AoA tracking of an electric car signalling with a IEEE 802.11p-like standard is implemented using a test-bed and real measures elaborated with a the proposed Particle Swarm Adaptive Scattering (PSAS) algorithm. The tracking of a UAV moving in the 3D space is investigated emulating the UAV trajectory using the proposed Confined Area Random Aerial Trajectory Emulator (CARATE) algorithm

    Multipath Assisted Positioning with Transmitter Visibility Information

    In multipath assisted positioning, multipath components (MPCs) are regarded as line-of-sight (LoS) signals from virtual transmitters. Instead of trying to mitigate the influence of MPCs, the spatial information contained in MPCs is exploited for localization. The locations of the physical and virtual transmitters are in general unknown but can be estimated with simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Recently, a multipath assisted positioning algorithm named Channel-SLAM for terrestrial radio signals has been introduced. It simultaneously tracks the position of a receiver and maps the locations of physical and virtual radio transmitters. Maps of estimated transmitter locations can be augmented by additional information. Within this paper, we propose to extend the Channel-SLAM algorithm by mapping information about the visibility of transmitters. A physical or virtual transmitter is visible, if its signal is received in a LoS condition. We derive a novel particle filter for Channel-SLAM that estimates and exploits visibility information on transmitters in addition to their locations. We show by means of simulations in an indoor scenario that our novel particle filter improves the positioning performance of Channel-SLAM considerably

    Convergent communication, sensing and localization in 6g systems: An overview of technologies, opportunities and challenges

    Herein, we focus on convergent 6G communication, localization and sensing systems by identifying key technology enablers, discussing their underlying challenges, implementation issues, and recommending potential solutions. Moreover, we discuss exciting new opportunities for integrated localization and sensing applications, which will disrupt traditional design principles and revolutionize the way we live, interact with our environment, and do business. Regarding potential enabling technologies, 6G will continue to develop towards even higher frequency ranges, wider bandwidths, and massive antenna arrays. In turn, this will enable sensing solutions with very fine range, Doppler, and angular resolutions, as well as localization to cm-level degree of accuracy. Besides, new materials, device types, and reconfigurable surfaces will allow network operators to reshape and control the electromagnetic response of the environment. At the same time, machine learning and artificial intelligence will leverage the unprecedented availability of data and computing resources to tackle the biggest and hardest problems in wireless communication systems. As a result, 6G will be truly intelligent wireless systems that will provide not only ubiquitous communication but also empower high accuracy localization and high-resolution sensing services. They will become the catalyst for this revolution by bringing about a unique new set of features and service capabilities, where localization and sensing will coexist with communication, continuously sharing the available resources in time, frequency, and space. This work concludes by highlighting foundational research challenges, as well as implications and opportunities related to privacy, security, and trust
