    Batched Patch Caching for Streaming Media

    We elaborate on a scheme that combines batch patching at an origin server and prefix/interval caching at an edge server receiving the clients' requests. We derive a cost function that factors in the aggregate backbone rate, the cache occupancy and the disk bandwidth utilization. We define the optimal batched patch caching strategy as a function of the client request rate. Finally, we show how various strategies including full caching, no caching and pure prefix caching with no patching are optimal derivations of our scheme under different request rates. We demonstrate the benefits of our scheme compared to classical streaming strategies

    System analysis of a Peer-to-Peer Video-on-Demand architecture : Kangaroo

    Architectural design and deployment of Peer-to-Peer Video-on-Demand (P2PVoD) systems which support VCR functionalities is attracting the interest of an increasing number of research groups within the scientific community; especially due to the intrinsic characteristics of such systems and the benefits that peers could provide at reducing the server load. This work focuses on the performance analysis of a P2P-VoD system considering user behaviors obtained from real traces together with other synthetic user patterns. The experiments performed show that it is feasible to achieve a performance close to the best possible. Future work will consider monitoring the physical characteristics of the network in order to improve the design of different aspects of a VoD system.El disseny arquitectònic i el desplegament de sistemes de Vídeo sota Demanda "Peer-to-Peer" que soporten funcionalitats VCR està captant l'interès d'un nombre creixent de grups de recerca a la comunitat científica, degut especialment a les característiques intrínsiques dels mencionats sistemes i als beneficis que els peers podrien proporcionar a la reducció de la càrrega en el servidor. Aquest treball tracta l'anàlisi del rendiment d'un sistema P2P-VoD considerant el comportament d'usuaris obtingut amb traçes reals i amb patrons sintètics. Els experiments realitzats mostren que és viable assolir un rendiment proper al cas més óptim. El trabajo futuro considerará la monitorización de las características físicas de la red para poder mejorar el diseño de los diferentes aspectos que conforman un sistema de VoD

    Optimal Proxy Management for Multimedia Streaming in Content Distribution Networks

    The widespread use of the Internet and the maturing of digital video technology have led to an increase in various streaming media applications. As broadband to the home becomes more prevalent, the bottleneck of delivering quality streaming media is shifting upstream to the backbone, peering links, and the best-effort Internet. In this paper, we address the problem of efficiently streaming video assets to the end clients over a distributed infrastructure consisting of origin servers and proxy caches. We build on earlier work and propose a unified mathematical framework under which various server scheduling and proxy cache management algorithms for video streaming can be analyzed. More precisely, we incorporate known server scheduling algorithms (batching/patching/batchpatching) and proxy caching algorithms (full/partial/no caching with or without caching patch bytes) in our framework and analyze the minimum backbone bandwidth consumption under the optimal joint scheduling and caching strategies. We start by studying the optimal policy for streaming a single video object and derive a simple heuristic to enable management of multiple heterogeneous videos efficiently. We then show that the performance of our heuristic is close to that of the optimal scheme, under a wide range of parameters

    Optimal Proxy Cache Allocation for Efficient Streaming Media Distribution

    In this paper, we address the problem of efficiently streaming a set of heterogeneous videos from a remote server through a proxy to multiple asynchronous clients so that they can experience playback with low startup delays. We develop a technique to analytically determine the optimal proxy prefix cache allocation to the videos that minimizes the aggregate network bandwidth cost. We integrate proxy caching with traditional serverbased reactive transmission schemes such as batching, patching and stream merging to develop a set of proxy-assisted delivery schemes. We quantitatively explore the impact of the choice of transmission scheme, cache allocation policy, proxy cache size, and availability of unicast versus multicast capability, on the resultant transmission cost. Our evaluations show that even a relatively small prefix cache (10%-20% of the video repository) is sufficient to realize substantial savings in transmission cost. We find that carefully designed proxy-assisted reactive transmission schemes can produce significant cost savings even in predominantly unicast environments such as the Internet

    RESTful Wireless Sensor Networks

    Sensor networks have diverse structures and generally employ proprietary protocols to gather useful information about the physical world. This diversity generates problems to interact with these sensors since custom APIs are needed which are tedious, error prone and have steep learning curve. In this thesis, I present RESThing, a lightweight REST framework for wireless sensor networks to ease the process of interacting with these sensors by making them accessible over the Web. I evaluate the system and show that it is feasible to support widely used and standard Web protocols in wireless sensor networks. Being able to integrate these tiny devices seamlessly into the global information medium, we can achieve the Web of Things

    Multiresolution Techniques for Real–Time Visualization of Urban Environments and Terrains

    In recent times we are witnessing a steep increase in the availability of data coming from real–life environments. Nowadays, virtually everyone connected to the Internet may have instant access to a tremendous amount of data coming from satellite elevation maps, airborne time-of-flight scanners and digital cameras, street–level photographs and even cadastral maps. As for other, more traditional types of media such as pictures and videos, users of digital exploration softwares expect commodity hardware to exhibit good performance for interactive purposes, regardless of the dataset size. In this thesis we propose novel solutions to the problem of rendering large terrain and urban models on commodity platforms, both for local and remote exploration. Our solutions build on the concept of multiresolution representation, where alternative representations of the same data with different accuracy are used to selectively distribute the computational power, and consequently the visual accuracy, where it is more needed on the base of the user’s point of view. In particular, we will introduce an efficient multiresolution data compression technique for planar and spherical surfaces applied to terrain datasets which is able to handle huge amount of information at a planetary scale. We will also describe a novel data structure for compact storage and rendering of urban entities such as buildings to allow real–time exploration of cityscapes from a remote online repository. Moreover, we will show how recent technologies can be exploited to transparently integrate virtual exploration and general computer graphics techniques with web applications
