    Deterministic Assembly Scheduling Problems: A Review and Classification of Concurrent-Type Scheduling Models and Solution Procedures

    Many activities in industry and services require the scheduling of tasks that can be concurrently executed, the most clear example being perhaps the assembly of products carried out in manufacturing. Although numerous scientific contributions have been produced on this area over the last decades, the wide extension of the problems covered and the lack of a unified approach have lead to a situation where the state of the art in the field is unclear, which in turn hinders new research and makes translating the scientific knowledge into practice difficult. In this paper we propose a unified notation for assembly scheduling models that encompass all concurrent-type scheduling problems. Using this notation, the existing contributions are reviewed and classified into a single framework, so a comprehensive, unified picture of the field is obtained. In addition, a number of conclusions regarding the state of the art in the topic are presented, as well as some opportunities for future research.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación español DPI2016-80750-

    Dynamic set-up rules for hybrid flow shop scheduling with parallel batching machines

    An S-stage hybrid (or flexible) flow shop, with sequence-independent uniform set-up times, parallel batching machines with compatible parallel batch families (like in casting or heat treatments in furnaces, chemical or galvanic baths, painting in autoclave, etc.) has been analysed with the purpose of reducing the number of tardy jobs (and the makespan); in Graham’s notation: FPB(m_1, m_2, … , m_S)|p-batch, STsi,b|SUM(Ui). Jobs are sorted dynamically (at each new delivery); batches are closed within sliding (or rolling) time windows and processed in parallel by multiple identical machines. Computation experiments have shown the better performance on benchmarks of the two proposed heuristics based on new formulations of the critical ratio (CRsetup) considering the ratio of allowance set-up and processing time in the scheduling horizon, which improves the weighted modified operation due date rule

    Heuristics for scheduling a two-stage hybrid flow shop with parallel batching machines: application at a hospital sterilisation plant

    The model of a two-stage hybrid (or flexible) flow shop, with sequence-independent uniform setup times, parallel batching machines and parallel batches has been analysed with the purpose of reducing the number of tardy jobs and the makespan in a sterilisation plant. Jobs are processed in parallel batches by multiple identical parallel machines. Manual operations preceding each of the two stages have been dealt with as machine setup with standardised times and are sequence-independent. A mixed-integer model is proposed. Two heuristics have been tested on real benchmark data from an existing sterilisation plant: constrained size of parallel batches and fixed time slots. Computation experiments performed on combinations of machines and operator numbers suggest balancing the two stages by assigning operators proportionally to the setup time requirements

    A biased-randomized discrete-event algorithm for the hybrid flow shop problem with time dependencies and priority constraints

    Based on a real-world application in the semiconductor industry, this article models and discusses a hybrid flow shop problem with time dependencies and priority constraints. The analyzed problem considers a production where a large number of heterogeneous jobs are processed by a number of machines. The route that each job has to follow depends upon its type, and, in addition, some machines require that a number of jobs are combined in batches before starting their processing. The hybrid flow model is also subject to a global priority rule and a “same setup” rule. The primary goal of this study was to find a solution set (permutation of jobs) that minimizes the production makespan. While simulation models are frequently employed to model these time-dependent flow shop systems, an optimization component is needed in order to generate high-quality solution sets. In this study, a novel algorithm is proposed to deal with the complexity of the underlying system. Our algorithm combines biased-randomization techniques with a discrete-event heuristic, which allows us to model dependencies caused by batching and different paths of jobs efficiently in a near-natural way. As shown in a series of numerical experiments, the proposed simulation-optimization algorithm can find solutions that significantly outperform those provided by employing state-of-the-art simulation software.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    New efficient constructive heuristics for the hybrid flowshop to minimise makespan: A computational evaluation of heuristics

    This paper addresses the hybrid flow shop scheduling problem to minimise makespan, a well-known scheduling problem for which many constructive heuristics have been proposed in the literature. Nevertheless, the state of the art is not clear due to partial or non homogeneous comparisons. In this paper, we review these heuristics and perform a comprehensive computational evaluation to determine which are the most efficient ones. A total of 20 heuristics are implemented and compared in this study. In addition, we propose four new heuristics for the problem. Firstly, two memory-based constructive heuristics are proposed, where a sequence is constructed by inserting jobs one by one in a partial sequence. The most promising insertions tested are kept in a list. However, in contrast to the Tabu search, these insertions are repeated in future iterations instead of forbidding them. Secondly, we propose two constructive heuristics based on Johnson’s algorithm for the permutation flowshop scheduling problem. The computational results carried out on an extensive testbed show that the new proposals outperform the existing heuristics.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación DPI2016-80750-
