Generating 3D product design models in real-time using hand motion and gesture
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Three dimensional product design models are widely used in conceptual design and in the early stage of prototyping during the design processes. A product design specification often demands a substantial amount of 3D models to be constructed within a short period of time. Current methods begin with designers sketching product concepts in 2D using pencil and paper, which in turn are then translated into 3D models by a design individual with CAD expertise, using a 3D modelling software package such as Pro Engineer, Solid Works, Auto CAD etc. Several novel methods have been used to incorporate hand motion as a way of interacting with computers. There are three main types of technology available to capture motion data, capable of translating human motion into numeric data which can be read by a computer system. The first being, hand gesture glove-based systems such as âCybergloveâ, these systems are generally used to capture hand gesture and joint angle information. The second is full body motion capture systems, optical and non-optical-based, and finally vision based gesture recognition systems which capture full degree of - freedom (DOF) hand motion estimation. There has yet to be a method using any of the above mentioned input devices to rapidly produce 3D product design models in real time, using hand motion and gestures. In this research, a novel method is presented, using a motion capture system to capture hand gestures and motion in real time, to recreate 3D curves and surfaces, which can be translated into 3D product design models. The main aim of this research is to develop a hand motion and gesture-based rapid 3D product modelling method, allowing designers to interactively sketch out 3D concepts in real time using a virtual workspace.
A database of a number of hand signs was built for both architectural hand signs (preliminary study) and Product Design hand signs. A marker set model with a total of eight markers (five on the left hand and three on right hand/marker pen) was designed and used in the capture of hand gestures with the use of an Optical Motion Capture System. A preliminary testing session was successfully completed to determine whether the Motion Capture system would be suitable for a real-time application, by effectively modelling a train station in an offline state using hand motion and gesture. An OpenGL software application was programmed using C++ and the Microsoft Foundation Classes which was used to communicate and pass information of captured motion from the EVaRT system to the user
Human-centered Electric Prosthetic (HELP) Hand
Through a partnership with Indian non-profit Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti, we designed a functional, robust, and and low cost electrically powered prosthetic hand that communicates with unilateral, transradial, urban Indian amputees through a biointerface. The device uses compliant tendon actuation, a small linear servo, and a wearable garment outfitted with flex sensors to produce a device that, once placed inside a prosthetic glove, is anthropomorphic in both look and feel. The prosthesis was developed such that future groups can design for manufacturing and distribution in India

Gestural patterns: a new method of printed textile design using motion capture technology
The aim of this research is to develop a new method, Hybrid Printing System (HPS) to explore digital craft methods to create surface patterns for printed textile design. This novel method of creating âhandcraftedâ prints is a result of the integration of two technologies such as motion-capture (MOCAP) and digital textile printing (DTP). The research towards such an innovation required a current, historical, contextual and experimental study of use of motion capture in Art &Design. The research contextualises the hand and its relationship to digital crafting methods in printed textile design, the digital medium and the process of audience participation in printed textile design to create a new conceptual framework balanced in practice and theory. The practical research then develops three new methods of motion capture such as, motion tracing, motion sensing and motion tracking to generate gestural motifs and gestural patterns. This thesis and the accompanying set of experimental work demonstrates that HPS culminates in developing new aesthetics through a new mode of creation in a new medium, which will impact the user, the designer and the product as a part of the cyclical process. HPS is an advancement of printed textile design, centred in active participation of its audience at the generative stage of design. This results in a shifting role of a designer and subverts the current model of printed textile design practice. HPS is a democratic design process where the participants design for themselves, have their own voice, which induces a sense of community, togetherness and harmony in the creative process
Performance evaluation of a six-axis generalized force-reflecting teleoperator
Work in real-time distributed computation and control has culminated in a prototype force-reflecting telemanipulation system having a dissimilar master (cable-driven, force-reflecting hand controller) and a slave (PUMA 560 robot with custom controller), an extremely high sampling rate (1000 Hz), and a low loop computation delay (5 msec). In a series of experiments with this system and five trained test operators covering over 100 hours of teleoperation, performance was measured in a series of generic and application-driven tasks with and without force feedback, and with control shared between teleoperation and local sensor referenced control. Measurements defining task performance included 100-Hz recording of six-axis force/torque information from the slave manipulator wrist, task completion time, and visual observation of predefined task errors. The task consisted of high precision peg-in-hole insertion, electrical connectors, velcro attach-de-attach, and a twist-lock multi-pin connector. Each task was repeated three times under several operating conditions: normal bilateral telemanipulation, forward position control without force feedback, and shared control. In shared control, orientation was locally servo controlled to comply with applied torques, while translation was under operator control. All performance measures improved as capability was added along a spectrum of capabilities ranging from pure position control through force-reflecting teleoperation and shared control. Performance was optimal for the bare-handed operator

A virtual hand assessment system for efficient outcome measures of hand rehabilitation
Previously held under moratorium from 1st December 2016 until 1st December 2021.Hand rehabilitation is an extremely complex and critical process in the medical rehabilitation field. This is mainly due to the high articulation of the hand functionality. Recent research has focused on employing new technologies, such as robotics and system control, in order to improve the precision and efficiency of the standard clinical methods used in hand rehabilitation. However, the designs of these devices were either oriented toward a particular hand injury or heavily dependent on subjective assessment techniques to evaluate the progress. These limitations reduce the efficiency of the hand rehabilitation devices by providing less effective results for restoring the lost functionalities of the dysfunctional hands. In this project, a novel technological solution and efficient hand assessment system is produced that can objectively measure the restoration outcome and, dynamically, evaluate its performance. The proposed system uses a data glove sensorial device to measure the multiple ranges of motion for the hand joints, and a Virtual Reality system to return an illustrative and safe visual assistance environment that can self-adjust with the subjectâs performance. The system application implements an original finger performance measurement method for analysing the various hand functionalities. This is achieved by extracting the multiple features of the hand digitsâ motions; such as speed, consistency of finger movements and stability during the hold positions. Furthermore, an advanced data glove calibration method was developed and implemented in order to accurately manipulate the virtual hand model and calculate the hand kinematic movements in compliance with the biomechanical structure of the hand. The experimental studies were performed on a controlled group of 10 healthy subjects (25 to 42 years age). The results showed intra-subject reliability between the trials (average of crosscorrelation Ï = 0.7), inter-subject repeatability across the subjectâs performance (p > 0.01 for the session with real objects and with few departures in some of the virtual reality sessions). In addition, the finger performance values were found to be very efficient in detecting the multiple elements of the fingersâ performance including the load effect on the forearm. Moreover, the electromyography measurements, in the virtual reality sessions, showed high sensitivity in detecting the tremor effect (the mean power frequency difference on the right Vextensor digitorum muscle is 176 Hz). Also, the finger performance values for the virtual reality sessions have the same average distance as the real life sessions (RSQ =0.07). The system, besides offering an efficient and quantitative evaluation of hand performance, it was proven compatible with different hand rehabilitation techniques where it can outline the primarily affected parts in the hand dysfunction. It also can be easily adjusted to comply with the subjectâs specifications and clinical hand assessment procedures to autonomously detect the classification task events and analyse them with high reliability. The composer as technologist : an investigation into compositional process
This work presents an investigation into compositional process. This is undertaken where a study of musical gesture, certain areas of cognitive musicology, computer vision technologies and object-orientated programming, provide the basis for a composer (author) to assume the role of a technologist and acquire knowledge and skills to that end. In particular, it focuses on the application and development of a video gesture recognition heuristic to the compositional problems posed. The result is the creation of an interactive musical work with score for violin and electronics that supports the research findings. In addition, the investigative approach into developing technology to solve musical problems that explores practical composition and aesthetic challenges is detailed
