Performance Considerations for an Embedded Implementation of OMA DRM 2
As digital content services gain importance in the mobile world, Digital
Rights Management (DRM) applications will become a key component of mobile
terminals. This paper examines the effect dedicated hardware macros for
specific cryptographic functions have on the performance of a mobile terminal
that supports version 2 of the open standard for Digital Rights Management
defined by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). Following a general description of
the standard, the paper contains a detailed analysis of the cryptographic
operations that have to be carried out before protected content can be
accessed. The combination of this analysis with data on execution times for
specific algorithms realized in hardware and software has made it possible to
build a model which has allowed us to assert that hardware acceleration for
specific cryptographic algorithms can significantly reduce the impact DRM has

Towards an Efficient Context-Aware System: Problems and Suggestions to Reduce Energy Consumption in Mobile Devices
Looking for optimizing the battery consumption is
an open issue, and we think it is feasible if we analyze the
battery consumption behavior of a typical context-aware
application to reduce context-aware operations at runtime.
This analysis is based on different context sensors
configurations. Actually existing context-aware approaches are
mainly based on collecting and sending context data to external
components, without taking into account how expensive are
these operations in terms of energy consumption. As a first
result of our work in progress, we are proposing a way for
reducing the context data publishing. We have designed a
testing battery consumption architecture supported by Nokia
Energy Profiler tool to verify consumption in different scenarios

The recognition performance was assessed against two different video image frame rate variations: 25 and 2 fps. The assessment included a range of objective and subjective criteria. The obtained results show that the effects of the frame rate variations on the performance are statistically insignificant. This paper belongs to the process of development of a novel system for navigation of visually impaired pedestrians. The navigation system includes a remote vision facility, and the visual recognition of the environmental hazards by the sighted human guide is a basic activity in aiding the visually impaired user of the system in mobility
