    Simulation Based Analysis of Kinematics, Dynamics and Control of Space Robots

    The space robotics kinematics, dynamics and control were studied by simulation. An emerging concept in space robotics is the Virtual Manipulator (VM) concept. In this study, the VM concept was enhanced and verified through simulation. The mathematical software package MATHEMATICA was used to compute the formulations. In the kinematics simulation of free-floating space robotics systems the concept of VM was enhanced which relates to the homogeneous matrix formulation. This was established by simulation results, there are no external forces condition, the inverse kinematics solution can be solved. In the area of space robot dynamic identification, the method based on conservation law of linear and angular momentum of a space robot from the VM approach was introduced. It was shown that the acceleration of the Virtual Base (VB) was proportionally equal to the change of its position in inertial space from the applied forces or torques. The forces or torques rotates about the system center of mass. A PD control law was used with the simulation test to identify the dynamic parameters. In the problem of trajectory planning, the VM concept was utilized that allow the space robot translation and rotation with respect to an inertial reference frame. A method was developed that can compute the satellite platform moments from the manipulator's motion. The resolved motion rate control algorithm was used for time periodic feedback control. In the simulation results, a satellite-based three degrees of freedom robot was simulated using schematic illustrations. The telerobotic control system was used in the space robotics control. In the masterslave control environment study, several considerations were taken into account, like the master and slave arm configuration, telemonitoring force feedback algorithm, and dynamic characteristics of master and slave arm.     Experiments in cooperative-arm object manipulation with a two-armed free-flying robot

    Developing computed-torque controllers for complex manipulator systems using current techniques and tools is difficult because they address the issues pertinent to simulation, as opposed to control. A new formulation of computed-torque (CT) control that leads to an automated computer-torque robot controller program is presented. This automated tool is used for simulations and experimental demonstrations of endpoint and object control from a free-flying robot. A new computed-torque formulation states the multibody control problem in an elegant, homogeneous, and practical form. A recursive dynamics algorithm is presented that numerically evaluates kinematics and dynamics terms for multibody systems given a topological description. Manipulators may be free-flying, and may have closed-chain constraints. With the exception of object squeeze-force control, the algorithm does not deal with actuator redundancy. The algorithm is used to implement an automated 2D computed-torque dynamics and control package that allows joint, endpoint, orientation, momentum, and object squeeze-force control. This package obviates the need for hand-derivation of kinematics and dynamics, and is used for both simulation and experimental control. Endpoint control experiments are performed on a laboratory robot that has two arms to manipulate payloads, and uses an air bearing to achieve very-low drag characteristics. Simulations and experimental data for endpoint and object controllers are presented for the experimental robot - a complex dynamic system. There is a certain rather wide set of conditions under which CT endpoint controllers can neglect robot base accelerations (but not motions) and achieve comparable performance including base accelerations in the model.     Instantaneous Momentum-Based Control of Floating Base Systems

    In the last two decades a growing number of robotic applications such as autonomous drones, wheeled robots and industrial manipulators started to be employed in several human environments. However, these machines often possess limited locomotion and/or manipulation capabilities, thus reducing the number of achievable tasks and increasing the complexity of robot-environment interaction. Augmenting robots locomotion and manipulation abilities is a fundamental research topic, with a view to enhance robots participation in complex tasks involving safe interaction and cooperation with humans. To this purpose, humanoid robots, aerial manipulators and the novel design of flying humanoid robots are among the most promising platforms researchers are studying in the attempt to remove the existing technological barriers. These robots are often modeled as floating base systems, and have lost the assumption -- typical of fixed base robots -- of having one link always attached to the ground. From the robot control side, contact forces regulation revealed to be fundamental for the execution of interaction tasks. Contact forces can be influenced by directly controlling the robot's momentum rate of change, and this fact gives rise to several momentum-based control strategies. Nevertheless, effective design of force and torque controllers still remains a complex challenge. The variability of sensor load during interaction, the inaccuracy of the force/torque sensing technology and the inherent nonlinearities of robot models are only a few complexities impairing efficient robot force control. This research project focuses on the design of balancing and flight controllers for floating base robots interacting with the surrounding environment. More specifically, the research is built upon the state-of-the-art of momentum-based controllers and applied to three robotic platforms: the humanoid robot iCub, the aerial manipulator OTHex and the jet-powered humanoid robot iRonCub. The project enforces the existing literature with both theoretical and experimental results, aimed at achieving high robot performances and improved stability and robustness, in presence of different physical robot-environment interactions

    Unified Dynamics and Control of a Robot Manipulator Mounted on a VTOL Aircraft Platform

    An innovative type of mobile manipulator, designated Manipulator on VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) Aircraft (MOVA), is proposed as a potential candidate for autonomous execution of field work in less-structured indoor and outdoor environments. Practical use of the MOVA system requires a unified controller that addresses the coupled and complex dynamics of the composite system; especially the interaction of the robotic manipulator with the aircraft airframe. Model-based controller design methods require explicit dynamics models of the MOVA system. Preliminary investigation of a two-dimensional MOVA system toward a dynamics model and controller design is presented in preparation for developing the controller of the more complex MOVA system in 3D space. Dynamics of the planar MOVA system are derived using the Lagrangian approach and then transforming the result into a form that facilitates controller design using the concept of a virtual manipulator. A MOVA end-effector trajectory tracking controller was designed with the transformed dynamics equation using the integrator back-stepping control design framework. Validity of the controller is shown via stability analysis, simulation results, and results from a physical test-bed. A systematic approach is illustrated for the derivation of the 3D MOVA system dynamics equations. The resulting dynamics equations are represented abstractly in the standard robot dynamics form and proven to have the skew-symmetric property, which is a useful property for control derivation. An open source Mathematica program was developed to achieve automatic symbolic derivation of the MOVA system dynamics. Accessory tools were also designed to create a tool-chain that starts with an Autodesk Inventor CAD drawing, generates input to the Mathematica program, and then formats the output for direct use in MATLAB and Simulink. A unified nonlinear control algorithm that controls the 3D MOVA system, including both the aircraft and the onboard manipulator, as a single entity was developed to achieve trajectory tracking of the MOVA end-effector position and attitude based on the explicit dynamics equation. Globally Uniformly Ultimately Bounded (GUUB) stability is proven for the controller using Lyapunov-type stability analysis. Physical testing was constructed in order to to demonstrate the performance of the proposed controller on a MOVA system with a two-link onboard manipulator

    The coordinated control of space robot teams for the on-orbit construction of large flexible space structures

This work focuses on the control of teams of robots performing construction tasks such as manipulation and assembly of large space structures. The control of the robot structure system is difficult. The space structures are flexible and there are significant dynamic interactions between the robots and the structures. Forces applied by the robots may excite undesirable vibrations in the structures. Furthermore, the changing configuration of the system results in the system dynamics being described by a set of non-linear partial differential equations. Limited sensing and actuation in space present additional challenges. The approach proposed here is to transform the system dynamics into a set of linear time-varying ordinary differential equations. The control of the high-frequency robots can be decoupled from the control of the low-frequency structures. This approach allows the robots to apply forces to the structures and control the dynamic interactions between the structures and the robots.     Contact aware robust semi-autonomous teleoperation of mobile manipulators

    In the context of human-robot collaboration, cooperation and teaming, the use of mobile manipulators is widespread on applications involving unpredictable or hazardous environments for humans operators, like space operations, waste management and search and rescue on disaster scenarios. Applications where the manipulator's motion is controlled remotely by specialized operators. Teleoperation of manipulators is not a straightforward task, and in many practical cases represent a common source of failures. Common issues during the remote control of manipulators are: increasing control complexity with respect the mechanical degrees of freedom; inadequate or incomplete feedback to the user (i.e. limited visualization or knowledge of the environment); predefined motion directives may be incompatible with constraints or obstacles imposed by the environment. In the latter case, part of the manipulator may get trapped or blocked by some obstacle in the environment, failure that cannot be easily detected, isolated nor counteracted remotely. While control complexity can be reduced by the introduction of motion directives or by abstraction of the robot motion, the real-time constraint of the teleoperation task requires the transfer of the least possible amount of data over the system's network, thus limiting the number of physical sensors that can be used to model the environment. Therefore, it is of fundamental to define alternative perceptive strategies to accurately characterize different interaction with the environment without relying on specific sensory technologies. In this work, we present a novel approach for safe teleoperation, that takes advantage of model based proprioceptive measurement of the robot dynamics to robustly identify unexpected collisions or contact events with the environment. Each identified collision is translated on-the-fly into a set of local motion constraints, allowing the exploitation of the system redundancies for the computation of intelligent control laws for automatic reaction, without requiring human intervention and minimizing the disturbance of the task execution (or, equivalently, the operator efforts). More precisely, the described system consist in two different building blocks. The first, for detecting unexpected interactions with the environment (perceptive block). The second, for intelligent and autonomous reaction after the stimulus (control block). The perceptive block is responsible of the contact event identification. In short, the approach is based on the claim that a sensorless collision detection method for robot manipulators can be extended to the field of mobile manipulators, by embedding it within a statistical learning framework. The control deals with the intelligent and autonomous reaction after the contact or impact with the environment occurs, and consist on an motion abstraction controller with a prioritized set of constrains, where the highest priority correspond to the robot reconfiguration after a collision is detected; when all related dynamical effects have been compensated, the controller switch again to the basic control mode
