    Get PDF
In this chapter, a variety of procedures proposed in the literature to increase the impedance bandwidth of microstrip patch antennas are presented and discussed. Intrinsic techniques, proximity coupled and aperture-coupled patches, applying horizontally coupled patches to driven patch on a single layer and stacked patches are discussed. Beside the linear polarised solutions, some techniques for designing wideband circular polarised patch antennas are also presented. Furthermore, some other techniques proposed in the literature including log-periodic array of patches, E-shaped patch, L-shaped feeding, microstrip monopole slotted antenna, defected ground/patch technique and the latest works during the recent years are introduced and investigated. It is tried to make a comparison between different methods giving a typical bandwidth that can be obtained using each method, beside discussing about the benefits or limitations that each method has

Antenna Development for Radio Frequency Hyperthermia Applications

This thesis deals with the design steps, development and validation of an applicator for radio frequency hyperthermia cancer therapy. An applicator design to enhance targeted energy coupling is a key enabler for preferential temperature increments in tumour regions. A single-element, near-field approach requires a miniaturised solution, that addresses ergonomic needs and is tolerant to patient anatomy. The antenna war-field rriodality and the high-dielectric patient loading introduce significant analytical and computational resource challenges. The antenna input impedance has to be sufficiently insensitive to in-band resonant cletuning and the fields in the tissue can he targeted to selected areas in the patient. An introduction to the medical and biological background of hyperthermia is presented. The design requirements of antennas for medical and in particular for hyperthermia applications are highlighted. Starting from a conventional circular patch, the antenna evolved into a compact circular patch with a concentric annular ring and slotted groundplane, operating at the 434 MHz Industrial Scientific and Medical frequency band. Feed point location is optimized for an energy deposition pattern aligned with the antenna centre. The applicator is assessed with other published approaches and clinically used loop, dipole and square patch antennas. The antennas are evaluated for the unloaded condition and when loaded with a tri-layer body tissue numerical model. This model comprises skin, fat and transverse fiber of muscle of variable thicknesses to account for different body locations and patient. anatomy. A waterbolus containing de-ionized water is added at the skin interface for superficial tissue cooling aud antelina matching. The proposed applicator achieves a penetration depth that supersedes other approaches while remaining compact and an ergonomic fit to tumour areas on the body. To consider the inner and peripheral complex shapes of human bodies, the full human body numerical model developed by Remcom is used. This model was segmented from 1 mm step computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) cross-sections through and adult male and it comprises twenty-three tissue types with thermal and frequency-dependent dielectric properties. The applicator performance is evaluated at three anatomical body areas of the model to assess its suitability for treatment of tumours at different locations. These three anatomical regions present different aperture coupling and tissue composition. \u27Different conformal waterbolus and air gap thickness values are evaluated. The models used in this work are validated with measurements performed in a phantom containing a lossy liquid with dielectric properties representative of homogeneous human body tissue. The dosimetric assessment system (DASY) is used to evaluaxe the specific absorption rate (SAR) generated for the antenna into the liquid. The measurement setup with the antenna, phantom and liquid are simulated. Simulated and measured results in terrms of specific absorption rate and return loss are evaluated

Microstrip-fed Wideband Circularly Polarized Printed Antenna

    Get PDF
A wideband circularly-polarized printed antenna is proposed, which employs an asymmetrical dipole and a slit in the ground plane which are fed by an L-shaped microstrip feedline using a via. The proposed antenna geometry is arranged so that the orthogonal surface currents, which are generated in the dipole, feedline and ground plane, have the appropriate phase to provide circular polarization. A parametric study of the key parameters is made and the mechanism for circular polarization is described. The measured results show that the impedance bandwidth is approximately 1.34 GHz (2.45 GHz to 3.79 GHz) and the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth is approximately 770 MHz (2.88 GHz to 3.65 GHz) which represent fractional bandwidths of approximately 41% and 23%, respectively, with respect to a centre frequency of 3.3 GHz

Polarization reconfigurable air-filled substrate integrated waveguide cavity-backed slot antenna

The Internet of Things requires highly efficient ultra-wideband antenna systems that yield high performance at low manufacturing cost. Therefore, a novel ultra-wideband circular air-filled substrate-integrated-waveguide (AFSIW) cavity-backed annular slot antenna is proposed that enables straightforward integration into general-purpose materials by means of standard manufacturing techniques. The cavity top plane, serving as antenna aperture, contains two concentric annular slots, both split into two by shorting tabs that create a virtual electric wall. This enables the generation of a TE11; slot even mode in both parts of each annular slot, giving rise to a conical radiation pattern. By exciting two such modes and judiciously positioning their resonance frequencies, all the unlicensed national information infrastructure (U-NII) [5.15-5.85] GHz radio bands are covered. The annular slot antenna is then made polarization reconfigurable through an innovative excitation of the slot modes by replacing the shorting tabs with four pairs of the PIN diodes. These dynamically switch between two orthogonal linear polarizations by changing the dc control current at the antenna RF port through an external bias tee. This simple, yet effective, bias network enables the integration of all polarization control electronics inside the antenna cavity to protect them from environmental effects. A low-cost antenna substrate was realized through standard additive manufacturing in a 3D-printed substrate, while a standard high-frequency laminate was used to implement the upper conducting plane containing the radiating elements and the polarization reconfiguration electronics. The antenna features an impedance bandwidth of 0.93 GHz, a front-to-back ratio of 14 dB, a total antenna effiency higher than 95%, and 4.9 dBi gain for each polarization state

Design and Analysis of Dielectric Resonator Antennas For WLAN Applications

The increasing use of wireless mobile communication systems demand the antennas for different systems and standards with properties like reduced size, broadband, multi band operation, moderate gain etc. The planar and dielectric resonator antennas are the present day antenna designer’s choice. However, micro strip and Dielectric resonator antennas inherently have a narrow bandwidth. Since the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) first approved rules for the commercial use of ultra-wideband (UWB) in 2002, the experiments on ultra wide band (UWB) systems have been expanding rapidly. In this thesis, a low-cost compact microstrip line-fed antenna with parasitic patches resulting a Ultra-Wideband characteristics with a band dispensation is presented. The antenna was implemented on FR4 substrate with a thickness of 1.6mm & relative permittivity (µr) of 4.3 .It has a partial ground plane .The antennas is exited by microstrip line feed. The proposed antenna is a Rectangular shape , “T” shape,& “ð” shape made of Teflon of permittivity (µr) of 2.1& compare with “ð” shape made of Roger of permittivity (µr) of 10.2 .The proposed antenna is simulated with CST Studio 2011. The return loss results and radiation pattern plots of the antenna are included in this thesis
