Traditionally, when channel estimation techniques are utilised, the SFBC information signals are decoded one block at a time. In the proposed algorithm, multiple blocks of SFBC information signals are decoded simultaneously. The proposed channel estimation method can thus significantly reduce the amount of time required to decode information signals compared to similar channel estimation methods proposed in the literature. The proposed method is based on the maximum likelihood approach that offers linearity and simplicity of implementation. An expression for the pairwise error probability (PEP) is derived based on the estimated channel. The derived PEP is then used to determine the optimal power allocation for the pilot sequence. The performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated in high frequency selective channels, for different number of pilot symbols, using different modulation schemes. The algorithm is also tested under different levels of Doppler shift and for different number of transmit and receive antennas. The results show that the proposed scheme minimises the error margin between slow and high speed receivers compared to similar channel estimation methods in the literature.Peer reviewe
Scheduling Policies in Time and Frequency Domains for LTE Downlink Channel: A Performance Comparison
A key feature of the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) system is that the packet scheduler can make use of the channel quality information (CQI), which is periodically reported by user equipment either in an aggregate form for the whole downlink channel or distinguished for each available subchannel. This mechanism allows for wide discretion in resource allocation, thus promoting the flourishing of several scheduling algorithms, with different purposes. It is therefore of great interest to compare the performance of such algorithms under different scenarios. Here, we carry out a thorough performance analysis of different scheduling algorithms for saturated User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) traffic sources, as well as consider both the time- and frequency-domain versions of the schedulers and for both flat and frequency-selective channels. The analysis makes it possible to appreciate the difference among the scheduling algorithms and to assess the performance gain, in terms of cell capacity, users' fairness, and packet service time, obtained by exploiting the richer, but heavier, information carried by subchannel CQI. An important part of this analysis is a throughput guarantee scheduler, which we propose in this paper. The analysis reveals that the proposed scheduler provides a good tradeoff between cell capacity and fairness both for TCP and UDP traffic sources
Prototyping and Experimentation of a Closed-Loop Wireless Power Transmission with Channel Acquisition and Waveform Optimization
A systematic design of adaptive waveform for Wireless Power Transfer (WPT)
has recently been proposed and shown through simulations to lead to significant
performance benefits compared to traditional non-adaptive and heuristic
waveforms. In this study, we design the first prototype of a closed-loop
wireless power transfer system with adaptive waveform optimization based on
Channel State Information acquisition. The prototype consists of three
important blocks, namely the channel estimator, the waveform optimizer, and the
energy harvester. Software Defined Radio (SDR) prototyping tools are used to
implement a wireless power transmitter and a channel estimator, and a voltage
doubler rectenna is designed to work as an energy harvester. A channel adaptive
waveform with 8 sinewaves is shown through experiments to improve the average
harvested DC power at the rectenna output by 9.8% to 36.8% over a non-adaptive
design with the same number of sinewaves.Comment: accepted for publication in IEEE WPTC 201
Two-Layered Superposition of Broadcast/Multicast and Unicast Signals in Multiuser OFDMA Systems
We study optimal delivery strategies of one common and independent
messages from a source to multiple users in wireless environments. In
particular, two-layered superposition of broadcast/multicast and unicast
signals is considered in a downlink multiuser OFDMA system. In the literature
and industry, the two-layer superposition is often considered as a pragmatic
approach to make a compromise between the simple but suboptimal orthogonal
multiplexing (OM) and the optimal but complex fully-layered non-orthogonal
multiplexing. In this work, we show that only two-layers are necessary to
achieve the maximum sum-rate when the common message has higher priority than
the individual unicast messages, and OM cannot be sum-rate optimal in
general. We develop an algorithm that finds the optimal power allocation over
the two-layers and across the OFDMA radio resources in static channels and a
class of fading channels. Two main use-cases are considered: i) Multicast and
unicast multiplexing when users with uplink capabilities request both
common and independent messages, and ii) broadcast and unicast multiplexing
when the common message targets receive-only devices and users with uplink
capabilities additionally request independent messages. Finally, we develop a
transceiver design for broadcast/multicast and unicast superposition
transmission based on LTE-A-Pro physical layer and show with numerical
evaluations in mobile environments with multipath propagation that the capacity
improvements can be translated into significant practical performance gains
compared to the orthogonal schemes in the 3GPP specifications. We also analyze
the impact of real channel estimation and show that significant gains in terms
of spectral efficiency or coverage area are still available even with
estimation errors and imperfect interference cancellation for the two-layered
superposition system
Improved User Tracking in 5G Millimeter Wave Mobile Networks via Refinement Operations
The millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies offer the availability of huge
bandwidths to provide unprecedented data rates to next-generation cellular
mobile terminals. However, directional mmWave links are highly susceptible to
rapid channel variations and suffer from severe isotropic pathloss. To face
these impairments, this paper addresses the issue of tracking the channel
quality of a moving user, an essential procedure for rate prediction, efficient
handover and periodic monitoring and adaptation of the user's transmission
configuration. The performance of an innovative tracking scheme, in which
periodic refinements of the optimal steering direction are alternated to
sparser refresh events, are analyzed in terms of both achievable data rate and
energy consumption, and compared to those of a state-of-the-art approach. We
aim at understanding in which circumstances the proposed scheme is a valid
option to provide a robust and efficient mobility management solution. We show
that our procedure is particularly well suited to highly variant and unstable
mmWave environments.Comment: Accepted for publication to the 16th IEEE Annual Mediterranean Ad Hoc

Visualization on colour based flow vector of thermal image for movement detection during interactive session
Recently thermal imaging is exploited in applications such as motion and face detection. It has drawn attention many researchers to build such technology to improve lifestyle. This work proposed a technique to detect and identify a motion in sequence images for the application in security monitoring system or outdoor surveillance. Conventional system might cause false information with the present of shadow. Thus, methods employed in this work are Canny edge detector method, Lucas Kanade and Horn Shunck algorithms, to overcome the major problem when using thresholding method, which is only intensity or pixel magnitude is considered instead of relationships between the pixels. The results obtained could be observed in flow vector parameter and the segmentation colour based image for the time frame from 1 to 10 seconds. The visualization of both the parameters clarified the movement and changes of pixel intensity between two frames by the supportive colour segmentation, either in smooth or rough motion. Thus, this technique may contribute to others application such as biometrics, military system, and surveillance machine
