    Optimal Hankel Norm Model Reduction by Truncation of Trajectories

    We show how optimal Hankel-norm approximations of dynamical systems allow for a straightforward interpretation in terms of system trajectories. It is shown that for discrete time single-input systems optimal reductions are obtained by cutting 'balanced trajectories', i.e., by disconnecting the past and future in the input-output pairs relating to left- and right singular vectors of the system. A self-contained proof of optimality is given, and formulas are derived in terms of Faddeev sequences.     This paper is concerned with balanced realization and model reduction for discrete-time nonlinear systems. Singular perturbation type balanced truncation method is proposed. In this procedure, the Hankel singular values and the related controllability and observability properties are preserved, which is a natural generalization of both the linear discrete-time case and the nonlinear continuous-time case.

    Balanced truncation model reduction of periodic systems

    The balanced truncation approach to model reduction is considered for linear discrete-time periodic systems with time-varying dimensions. Stability of the reduced model is proved and a guaranteed additive bound is derived for the approximation error. These results represent generalizations of the corresponding ones for standard discrete-time systems. Two numerically reliable methods to compute reduced order models using the balanced truncation approach are considered. The square-root method and the potentially more accurate balancing-free square-root method belong to the family of methods with guaranteed enhanced computational accuracy. The key numerical computation in both methods is the determination of the Cholesky factors of the periodic Gramian matrices by solving nonnegative periodic Lyapunov equations with time-varying dimensions directly for the Cholesky factors of the solutions

    Feedback control of unstable steady states of flow past a flat plate using reduced-order estimators

    We present an estimator-based control design procedure for flow control, using reduced-order models of the governing equations, linearized about a possibly unstable steady state. The reduced models are obtained using an approximate balanced truncation method that retains the most controllable and observable modes of the system. The original method is valid only for stable linear systems, and we present an extension to unstable linear systems. The dynamics on the unstable subspace are represented by projecting the original equations onto the global unstable eigenmodes, assumed to be small in number. A snapshot-based algorithm is developed, using approximate balanced truncation, for obtaining a reduced-order model of the dynamics on the stable subspace. The proposed algorithm is used to study feedback control of 2-D flow over a flat plate at a low Reynolds number and at large angles of attack, where the natural flow is vortex shedding, though there also exists an unstable steady state. For control design, we derive reduced-order models valid in the neighborhood of this unstable steady state. The actuation is modeled as a localized body force near the leading edge of the flat plate, and the sensors are two velocity measurements in the near-wake of the plate. A reduced-order Kalman filter is developed based on these models and is shown to accurately reconstruct the flow field from the sensor measurements, and the resulting estimator-based control is shown to stabilize the unstable steady state. For small perturbations of the steady state, the model accurately predicts the response of the full simulation. Furthermore, the resulting controller is even able to suppress the stable periodic vortex shedding, where the nonlinear effects are strong, thus implying a large domain of attraction of the stabilized steady state.Comment: 36 pages, 17 figure

    We consider the efficient solution of the coprime factorization based H infinity controller approximation problems by using frequency-weighted balancing related model reduction approaches. It is shown that for a class of frequency-weighted performance preserving coprime factor reduction as well as for a relative error coprime factor reduction method, the computation of the frequency-weighted controllability and observability grammians can be done by solving Lyapunov equations of the order of the controller. The new approach can be used in conjunction with accuracy enhancing square-root and balancing-free techniques developed for the balancing related coprime factors based model reduction
