    Motion Planning and Control of Dynamic Humanoid Locomotion

    Inspired by human, humanoid robots has the potential to become a general-purpose platform that lives along with human. Due to the technological advances in many field, such as actuation, sensing, control and intelligence, it finally enables humanoid robots to possess human comparable capabilities. However, humanoid locomotion is still a challenging research field. The large number of degree of freedom structure makes the system difficult to coordinate online. The presence of various contact constraints and the hybrid nature of locomotion tasks make the planning a harder problem to solve. Template model anchoring approach has been adopted to bridge the gap between simple model behavior and the whole-body motion of humanoid robot. Control policies are first developed for simple template models like Linear Inverted Pendulum Model (LIPM) or Spring Loaded Inverted Pendulum(SLIP), the result controlled behaviors are then been mapped to the whole-body motion of humanoid robot through optimization-based task-space control strategies. Whole-body humanoid control framework has been verified on various contact situations such as unknown uneven terrain, multi-contact scenarios and moving platform and shows its generality and versatility. For walking motion, existing Model Predictive Control approach based on LIPM has been extended to enable the robot to walk without any reference foot placement anchoring. It is kind of discrete version of \u201cwalking without thinking\u201d. As a result, the robot could achieve versatile locomotion modes such as automatic foot placement with single reference velocity command, reactive stepping under large external disturbances, guided walking with small constant external pushing forces, robust walking on unknown uneven terrain, reactive stepping in place when blocked by external barrier. As an extension of this proposed framework, also to increase the push recovery capability of the humanoid robot, two new configurations have been proposed to enable the robot to perform cross-step motions. For more dynamic hopping and running motion, SLIP model has been chosen as the template model. Different from traditional model-based analytical approach, a data-driven approach has been proposed to encode the dynamics of the this model. A deep neural network is trained offline with a large amount of simulation data based on the SLIP model to learn its dynamics. The trained network is applied online to generate reference foot placements for the humanoid robot. Simulations have been performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in generating bio-inspired and robust running motions. The method proposed based on 2D SLIP model can be generalized to 3D SLIP model and the extension has been briefly mentioned at the end

    Hopping, Landing, and Balancing with Springs

    This work investigates the interaction of a planar double pendulum robot and springs, where the lower body (the leg) has been modified to include a spring-loaded passive prismatic joint. The thesis explores the mechanical advantage of adding a spring to the robot in hopping, landing, and balancing activities by formulating the motion problem as a boundary value problem; and also provides a control strategy for such scenarios. It also analyses the robustness of the developed controller to uncertain spring parameters, and an observer solution is provided to estimate these parameters while the robot is performing a tracking task. Finally, it shows a study of how well IMUs perform in bouncing conditions, which is critical for the proper operation of a hopping robot or a running-legged one

    Design of high-performance legged robots: A case study on a hopping and balancing robot

    The availability and capabilities of present-day technology suggest that legged robots should be able to physically outperform their biological counterparts. This thesis revolves around the philosophy that the observed opposite is caused by over-complexity in legged robot design, which is believed to substantially suppress design for high-performance. In this dissertation a design philosophy is elaborated with a focus on simple but high performance design. This philosophy is governed by various key points, including holistic design, technology-inspired design, machine and behaviour co-design and design at the performance envelope. This design philosophy also focuses on improving progress in robot design, which is inevitably complicated by the aspire for high performance. It includes an approach of iterative design by trial-and-error, which is believed to accelerate robot design through experience. This thesis mainly focuses on the case study of Skippy, a fully autonomous monopedal balancing and hopping robot. Skippy is maximally simple in having only two actuators, which is the minimum number of actuators required to control a robot in 3D. Despite its simplicity, it is challenged with a versatile set of high-performance activities, ranging from balancing to reaching record jump heights, to surviving crashes from several meters and getting up unaided after a crash, while being built from off-the-shelf technology. This thesis has contributed to the detailed mechanical design of Skippy and its optimisations that abide the design philosophy, and has resulted in a robust and realistic design that is able to reach a record jump height of 3.8m. Skippy is also an example of iterative design through trial-and-error, which has lead to the successful design and creation of the balancing-only precursor Tippy. High-performance balancing has been successfully demonstrated on Tippy, using a recently developed balancing algorithm that combines the objective of tracking a desired position command with balancing, as required for preparing hopping motions. This thesis has furthermore contributed to several ideas and theories on Skippy's road of completion, which are also useful for designing other high-performance robots. These contributions include (1) the introduction of an actuator design criterion to maximize the physical balance recovery of a simple balancing machine, (2) a generalization of the centre of percussion for placement of components that are sensitive to shock and (3) algebraic modelling of a non-linear high-gravimetric energy density compression spring with a regressive stress-strain profile. The activities performed and the results achieved have been proven to be valuable, however they have also delayed the actual creation of Skippy itself. A possible explanation for this happening is that Skippy's requirements and objectives were too ambitious, for which many complications were encountered in the decision-making progress of the iterative design strategy, involving trade-offs between exercising trial-and-error, elaborate simulation studies and the development of above-mentioned new theories. Nevertheless, from (1) the resulting realistic design of Skippy, (2) the successful creation and demonstrations of Tippy and (3) the contributed theories for high-performance robot design, it can be concluded that the adopted design philosophy has been generally successful. Through the case study design project of the hopping and balancing robot Skippy, it is shown that proper design for high physical performance (1) can indeed lead to a robot design that is capable of physically outperforming humans and animals and (2) is already very challenging for a robot that is intended to be very simple

    Self-propelled Bouncing Spherical Robot

Exploring non-traditional novel robots may provide new solutions for locomotion not previously examined. Currently, self-rolling spherical robots have been designed and manufactured for hobbies, entertainment, or military uses. Similarly, various researchers have built legged robots that walk and run. Our objective in this research project was to design, build, and control a self-propelled bouncing and rolling spherical robot. While some self-bouncing wheeled robots have been built as toys, the self-bouncing spherical robot (one that looks like a ball) remains largely not explored. No one has produced a robot that can bounce continuously and can be steered without any external device to assist its movement. To achieve this goal, we plan to prototype up to three different mechanisms for bouncing. Each prototype would go through brainstorming, computer-aided design and simulation (of the bouncing), initial build, redesign, second build, and final analysis. We follow the classic design cycle: observe, ideation, prototype, and testing. We will also perform dynamic analyses of the robot to improve the design. This thesis reports on current progress towards these goals: we have designed and fabricated (and iterated) on a simple prototype bouncing ball, based on a spinning internal mass; we have performed some 2D and 3D simulations of the spinning mechanism that shows promise for the mechanism to produce persistent bouncing.     Dynamic Balance and Gait Metrics for Robotic Bipeds

    For legged robots to be useful in the real world, they must be able to balance and walk reliably. Both of these abilities improve when a system is more effective at moving itself around relative to its contacts (i.e., its feet). Achieving this type of movement depends both on the controller used to perform the motion and the physical properties of the system. Although much work has been done on the development of dynamic controllers for balance and gait, only limited research exists on how to quantify a system’s physical balance capabilities or how to modify the system to improve those capabilities. From the control perspective, there are three strategies for maintaining balance in bipeds: flexing, leaning, and stepping. Both stepping and leaning strategies typically depend on balance points (critical points used for maintaining or regaining balance) to determine whether or not a step is needed, and if so, where to step. Although several balance point estimators exist, the majority of these methods make undesirable assumptions (e.g., ignoring the impact dynamics, assuming massless legs, planar motion, etc.). From the physical design perspective, one promising approach for analyzing system performance is a set of dynamic ratios called velocity and momentum gains, which are dependent only on the (scale-invariant) dynamic parameters and instantaneous configuration of a system, enabling entire classes of mechanisms to be analyzed at the same time. This thesis makes four key contributions towards improving biped balancing capabilities. First, a dynamic bipedal controller is proposed which uses a 3D balance point estimator both to respond to disturbances and produce reliable stepping. Second, a novel balance point estimator is proposed that facilitates stepping while combining and expanding the features of existing 2D and 3D estimators to produce a generalized 3D formulation. Third, the momentum gain formulation is extended to general 2D and 3D systems, then both gains are compared to centroidal momentum via a spatial formulation and incorporated into a generalized gain definition. Finally, the gains are used as a metric in an optimization framework to design parameterized balancing mechanisms within a given configuration space. Effectively, this enables an optimization of how well a system could balance without the need to pre-specify or co-generate controllers and/or trajectories. To validate the control contributions, simulated bipeds are subjected to external disturbances while standing still and walking. For the gain contributions, the framework is used to compare gain-optimized mechanisms to those based on the cost of transport metric. Through the combination of gain-based physical design optimization and the use of predictive, real-time balance point estimators within dynamic controllers, bipeds and other legged systems will soon be able to achieve reliable balance and gait in the real world

    International audienceSo-called robot-object Lagrangian systems consist of a class of nonsmooth underactuated complementarity Lagrangian systems, with a specific structure: an "object" and a "robot". Only the robot is actuated. The object dynamics can thus be controlled only through the action of the contact Lagrange multipliers, which represent the interaction forces between the robot and the object. Juggling, walking, running, hopping machines, robotic systems that manipulate objects, tapping, pushing systems, kinematic chains with joint clearance, crawling, climbing robots, some cable-driven manipulators, and some circuits with set-valued nonsmooth components, belong this class. This article aims at presenting their main features, then many application examples which belong to the robot-object class, then reviewing the main tools and control strategies which have been proposed in the Automatic Control and in the Robotics literature.
