    Development of Novel Compound Controllers to Reduce Chattering of Sliding Mode Control

    The robotics and dynamic systems constantly encountered with disturbances such as micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) gyroscope under disturbances result in mechanical coupling terms between two axes, friction forces in exoskeleton robot joints, and unmodelled dynamics of robot manipulator. Sliding mode control (SMC) is a robust controller. The main drawback of the sliding mode controller is that it produces high-frequency control signals, which leads to chattering. The research objective is to reduce chattering, improve robustness, and increase trajectory tracking of SMC. In this research, we developed controllers for three different dynamic systems: (i) MEMS, (ii) an Exoskeleton type robot, and (iii) a 2 DOF robot manipulator. We proposed three sliding mode control methods such as robust sliding mode control (RSMC), new sliding mode control (NSMC), and fractional sliding mode control (FSMC). These controllers were applied on MEMS gyroscope, Exoskeleton robot, and robot manipulator. The performance of the three proposed sliding mode controllers was compared with conventional sliding mode control (CSMC). The simulation results verified that FSMC exhibits better performance in chattering reduction, faster convergence, finite-time convergence, robustness, and trajectory tracking compared to RSMC, CSMC, and NSFC. Also, the tracking performance of NSMC was compared with CSMC experimentally, which demonstrated better performance of the NSMC controller

    Nonlinear control for Two-Link flexible manipulator

    Recently the use of robot manipulators has been increasing in many applications such as medical applications, automobile, construction, manufacturing, military, space, etc. However, current rigid manipulators have high inertia and use actuators with large energy consumption. Moreover, rigid manipulators are slow and have low payload-to arm-mass ratios because link deformation is not allowed. The main advantages of flexible manipulators over rigid manipulators are light in weight, higher speed of operation, larger workspace, smaller actuator, lower energy consumption and lower cost. However, there is no adequate closed-form solutions exist for flexible manipulators. This is mainly because flexible dynamics are modeled with partial differential equations, which give rise to infinite dimensional dynamical systems that are, in general, not possible to represent exactly or efficiently on a computer which makes modeling a challenging task. In addition, if flexibility nature wasn\u27t considered, there will be calculation errors in the calculated torque requirement for the motors and in the calculated position of the end-effecter. As for the control task, it is considered as a complex task since flexible manipulators are non-minimum phase system, under-actuated system and Multi-Input/Multi-Output (MIMO) nonlinear system. This thesis focuses on the development of dynamic formulation model and three control techniques aiming to achieve accurate position control and improving dynamic stability for Two-Link Flexible Manipulators (TLFMs). LQR controller is designed based on the linearized model of the TLFM; however, it is applied on both linearized and nonlinear models. In addition to LQR, Backstepping and Sliding mode controllers are designed as nonlinear control approaches and applied on both the nonlinear model of the TLFM and the physical system. The three developed control techniques are tested through simulation based on the developed dynamic formulation model using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Stability and performance analysis were conducted and tuned to obtain the best results. Then, the performance and stability results obtained through simulation are compared. Finally, the developed control techniques were implemented and analyzed on the 2-DOF Serial Flexible Link Robot experimental system from Quanser and the results are illustrated and compared with that obtained through simulation

    Performance Investigations of an Improved Backstepping Operational space Position Tracking Control of a Mobile Manipulator

    This article implies an improved backstepping control technique for the operational-space position tracking of a kinematically redundant mobile manipulator. The mobile manipulator thought-out for the analysis has a vehicle base with four mecanum wheels and a serial manipulator arm with three rotary actuated joints. The recommended motion controller provides a safeguard against the system dynamic variations owing to the parameter uncertainties, unmodelled system dynamics and unknown exterior disturbances. The Lyapunov’s direct method assists in designing and authenticating the system’s closed-loop stability and tracking ability of the suggested control strategy. The feasibility, effectiveness and robustness of the recommended controller are demonstrated and investigated numerically with the help of computer based simulations. The mathematical model used for the computer-based simulations is derived based on a real-time mobile manipulator and the derived model is further verified with an inbuilt gazebo model in a robot operating system (ROS) environment. In addition, the proposed scheme is verified on an in-house fabricated mobile manipulator system. Further, the recommended controller performance is correlated with the conventional backstepping control design in both computer-based simulations and in real-time experiments

    Optimal Control of Unknown Nonlinear System From Inputoutput Data

    Optimal control designers usually require a plant model to design a controller. The problem is the controller\u27s performance heavily depends on the accuracy of the plant model. However, in many situations, it is very time-consuming to implement the system identification procedure and an accurate structure of a plant model is very difficult to obtain. On the other hand, neuro-fuzzy models with product inference engine, singleton fuzzifier, center average defuzzifier, and Gaussian membership functions can be easily trained by many well-established learning algorithms based on given input-output data pairs. Therefore, this kind of model is used in the current optimal controller design. Two approaches of designing optimal controllers of unknown nonlinear systems based on neuro-fuzzy models are presented in the thesis. The first approach first utilizes neuro-fuzzy models to approximate the unknown nonlinear systems, and then the feasible-direction algorithm is used to achieve the numerical solution of the Euler-Lagrange equations of the formulated optimal control problem. This algorithm uses the steepest descent to find the search direction and then apply a one-dimensional search routine to find the best step length. Finally several nonlinear optimal control problems are simulated and the results show that the performance of the proposed approach is quite similar to that of optimal control to the system represented by an explicit mathematical model. However, due to the limitation of the feasible-direction algorithm, this method cannot be applied to highly nonlinear and dimensional plants. Therefore, another approach that can overcome these drawbacks is proposed. This method utilizes Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy models to design the optimal controller. TS fuzzy models are first derived from the direct linearization of the neuro-fuzzy models, which is close to the local linearization of the nonlinear dynamic systems. The operating points are chosen so that the TS fuzzy model is a good approximation of the neuro-fuzzy model. Based on the TS fuzzy model, the optimal control is implemented for a nonlinear two-link flexible robot and a rigid asymmetric spacecraft, thus providing the possibility of implementing the well-established optimal control method on unknown nonlinear dynamic systems

    An Application of Modified T2FHC Algorithm in Two-Link Robot Controller

    Parallel robotic systems have shown their advantages over the traditional serial robots such as high payload capacity, high speed, and high precision. Their applications are widespread from transportation to manufacturing fields. Therefore, most of the recent studies in parallel robots focus on finding the best method to improve the system accuracy. Enhancing this metric, however, is still the biggest challenge in controlling a parallel robot owing to the complex mathematical model of the system. In this paper, we present a novel solution to this problem with a Type 2 Fuzzy Coherent Controller Network (T2FHC), which is composed of a Type 2 Cerebellar Model Coupling Controller (CMAC) with its fast convergence ability and a Brain Emotional Learning Controller (BELC) using the Lyaponov-based weight updating rule. In addition, the T2FHC is combined with a surface generator to increase the system flexibility. To evaluate its applicability in real life, the proposed controller was tested on a Quanser 2-DOF robot system in three case studies: no load, 180 g load and 360 g load, respectively. The results showed that the proposed structure achieved superior performance compared to those of available algorithms such as CMAC and Novel Self-Organizing Fuzzy CMAC (NSOF CMAC). The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) index of the system that was 2.20E-06 for angle A and 2.26E-06 for angle B and the tracking error that was -6.42E-04 for angle A and 2.27E-04 for angle B demonstrate the good stability and high accuracy of the proposed T2FHC. With this outstanding achievement, the proposed method is promising to be applied to many applications using nonlinear systems

    Fractional Order Fault Tolerant Control - A Survey

    In this paper, a comprehensive review of recent advances and trends regarding Fractional Order Fault Tolerant Control (FOFTC) design is presented. This novel robust control approach has been emerging in the last decade and is still gathering great research efforts mainly because of its promising results and outcomes. The purpose of this study is to provide a useful overview for researchers interested in developing this interesting solution for plants that are subject to faults and disturbances with an obligation for a maintained performance level. Throughout the paper, the various works related to FOFTC in literature are categorized first by considering their research objective between fault detection with diagnosis and fault tolerance with accommodation, and second by considering the nature of the studied plants depending on whether they are modelized by integer order or fractional order models. One of the main drawbacks of these approaches lies in the increase in complexity associated with introducing the fractional operators, their approximation and especially during the stability analysis. A discussion on the main disadvantages and challenges that face this novel fractional order robust control research field is given in conjunction with motivations for its future development. This study provides a simulation example for the application of a FOFTC against actuator faults in a Boeing 747 civil transport aircraft is provided to illustrate the efficiency of such robust control strategies

    System identification and nonlinear model predictive control with collision avoidance applied in Hexacopters UAVs

    Accurate trajectory tracking is a critical property of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) due to system nonlinearities, under-actuated properties and constraints. Specifically, the use of unmanned rotorcrafts with accuracy trajectory tracking controllers in dynamic environments has the potential to improve the fields of environment monitoring, safety, search and rescue, border surveillance, geology and mining, agriculture industry, and traffic control. Monitoring operations in dynamic environments produce significant complications with respect to accuracy and obstacles in the surrounding environment and, in many cases, it is difficult to perform even with state-of-the-art controllers. This work presents a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) with collision avoidance for hexacopters’ trajectory tracking in dynamic environments, as well as shows a comparative study between the accuracies of the Euler–Lagrange formulation and the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) models in order to find the precise representation of the system dynamics. The proposed controller includes limits on the maneuverability velocities, system dynamics, obstacles and the tracking error in the optimization control problem (OCP). In order to show the good performance of this control proposal, computational simulations and real experiments were carried out using a six rotary-wind unmanned aerial vehicle (hexacopter—DJI MATRICE 600). The experimental results prove the good performance of the predictive scheme and its ability to regenerate the optimal control policy. Simulation results expand the proposed controller in simulating highly dynamic environments that showing the scalability of the controller

    Robust Control of Nonlinear Systems with applications to Aerial Manipulation and Self Driving Cars

    This work considers the problem of planning and control of robots in an environment with obstacles and external disturbances. The safety of robots is harder to achieve when planning in such uncertain environments. We describe a robust control scheme that combines three key components: system identification, uncertainty propagation, and trajectory optimization. Using this control scheme we tackle three problems. First, we develop a Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller (NMPC) for articulated rigid bodies and apply it to an aerial manipulation system to grasp object mid-air. Next, we tackle the problem of obstacle avoidance under unknown external disturbances. We propose two approaches, the first approach using adaptive NMPC with open- loop uncertainty propagation and the second approach using Tube NMPC. After that, we introduce dynamic models which use Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and combine them with NMPC to control a ground vehicle and an aerial manipulation system. Finally, we introduce a software framework for integrating the above algorithms to perform complex tasks. The software framework provides users with the ability to design systems that are robust to control and hardware failures where preventive action is taken before-hand. The framework also allows for safe testing of control and task logic in simulation before evaluating on the real robot. The software framework is applied to an aerial manipulation system to perform a package sorting task, and extensive experiments demonstrate the ability of the system to recover from failures. In addition to robust control, we present two related control problems. The first problem pertains to designing an obstacle avoidance controller for an underactuated system that is Lyapunov stable. We extend a standard gyroscopic obstacle avoidance controller to be applicable to an underactuated system. The second problem addresses the navigation of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) on an unstructured terrain. We propose using NMPC combined with a high fidelity physics engine to generate a reference trajectory that is dynamically feasible and accounts for unsafe areas in the terrain
