    Modeling and nonlinear adaptive control of an aerial manipulation system

    Autonomous aerial robots have become an essential part of many civilian and military applications. The workspace and agility of these vehicles motivated great research interest resulting in various studies addressing their control architectures and mechanical configurations. Increasing autonomy enabled them to perform tasks such as surveillance, inspection and remote sensing in hazardous and challenging environments. The ongoing research promises further contributions to the society, in both theory and practice. To furthermore extend their vast applications, aerial robots are equipped with the tools to enable physical interaction with the environment. These tasks represent a great challenge due to the technological limitations as well as the lack of sophisticated methods necessary for the control of the system to perform desired operations in an efficient and stable manner. Modeling and control problem of an aerial manipulation is still an open research topic with many studies addressing these issues from different perspectives. This thesis deals with the nonlinear adaptive control of an aerial manipulation system (AMS). The system consists of a quadrotor equipped with a 2 degrees of freedom (DOF) manipulator. The complete modeling of the system is done using the Euler-Lagrange method. A hierarchical nonlinear control structure which consists of outer and inner control loops has been utilized. Model Reference Adaptive Controller (MRAC) is designed for the outer loop where the required command signals are generated to force the quadrotor to move on a reference trajectory in the presence of mass uncertainties and reaction forces coming from the manipulator. For the inner loop, the attitude dynamics of the quadrotor and the joint dynamics of the 2-DOF robotic arm are considered as a fully actuated 5-DOF unified part of the AMS. Nonlinear adaptive control has been utilized for the low-level controller where the changes in inertias have been considered. The proposed controller is tested on a high fidelity AMS model in the presence of uncertainties, wind disturbances and measurement noise, and satisfactory trajectory tracking performance with improved robustness is achieved

    Micro air vehicle (MAV) technology has broken with simple mimicry of manned aircraft in order to fulfill emerging roles which demand low-cost reliability in the hands of novice users, safe operation in confined spaces, contact and manipulation of the environment, or merging vertical flight and forward flight capabilities. These specialized needs have motivated a surge of new specialized aircraft, but the majority of these design variations remain constrained by the same fundamental technologies underpinning their thrust and control. This dissertation solves the problem of simultaneously governing MAV thrust, roll, and pitch using only a single rotor and single motor. Such an actuator enables new cheap, robust, and light weight aircraft by eliminating the need for the complex ancillary controls of a conventional helicopter swashplate or the distributed propeller array of a quadrotor. An analytic model explains how cyclic blade pitch variations in a special passively articulated rotor may be obtained by modulating the main drive motor torque in phase with the rotor rotation. Experiments with rotors from 10 cm to 100 cm in diameter confirm the predicted blade lag, pitch, and flap motions. We show the operating principle scales similarly as traditional helicopter rotor technologies, but is subject to additional new dynamics and technology considerations. Using this new rotor, experimental aircraft from 29 g to 870 g demonstrate conventional flight capabilities without requiring more than two motors for actuation. In addition, we emulate the unusual capabilities of a fully actuated MAV over six degrees of freedom using only the thrust vectoring qualities of two teetering rotors. Such independent control over forces and moments has been previously obtained by holonomic or omnidirection multirotors with at least six motors, but we now demonstrate similar abilities using only two. Expressive control from a single actuator enables new categories of MAV, illustrated by experiments with a single actuator aircraft with spatial control and a vertical takeoff and landing airplane whose flight authority is derived entirely from two rotors

    In recent years, microfluidic devices with a large surface-to-volume ratio have witnessed rapid development, allowing them to be successfully utilized in many engineering applications. A smart control process has been proposed for many years, while many new innovations and enabling technologies have been developed for smart flow control, especially concerning “smart flow control” at the microscale. This Special Issue aims to highlight the current research trends related to this topic, presenting a collection of 33 papers from leading scholars in this field.     A defining theme of the 11th International Coral Reef Symposium was that the news for coral reef ecosystems are far from encouraging. Climate change happens now much faster than in an ice-age transition, and coral reefs continue to suffer fever-high temperatures as well as sour ocean conditions. Corals may be falling behind, and there appears to be no special silver bullet remedy. Nevertheless, there are hopeful signs that we should not despair. Reef ecosystems respond vigorously to protective measures and alleviation of stress. For concerned scientists, managers, conservationists, stakeholders, students, and citizens, there is a great role to play in continuing to report on the extreme threat that climate change represents to earth’s natural systems. Urgent action is needed to reduce CO2 emissions. In the interim, we can and must buy time for coral reefs through increased protection from sewage, sediment, pollutants, overfishing, development, and other stressors, all of which we know can damage coral health. The time to act is now. The canary in the coral-coal mine is dead, but we still have time to save the miners.
