Enrique Díez-Canedo: italian to spanish translator during the Silver Age. Historiographic contextualization

    Get PDF
Enrique D√≠ez-Canedo was an emblematic figure of the Silver Age cultural context in Spain. Although he remained obscured by the greatest successes of the age, he played a key role in different mechanisms which characterised the literary context in the first decades of the XX century by carrying out several professions: poet, literary critic, translator, professor. He dedicated himself to translation during his entire life realising a larger number of translations compared to his poems. Even in recent times some of his translations have been published because of the indubitable significance and validity. The studies of Enrique D√≠ez-Canedo as translator have started in the last two decades, especially research has been focused on the importance of French and English languages and literatures in his translation work. The present article is aimed at shedding light on D√≠ez-Canedo‚Äôs translations from Italian language since there are no systematic studies which clarify the connection between the author and the Italian language and literature. The object of study will be a corpus composed of forty-four Italian poets and sixty-six translations of poems covering eight centuries of Italian literature. The essay was carried out with the indispensable contribution of press and digitised journals of Silver Age that nowadays are accessible to all users thanks to important Spanish digital newspaper archives. The aim is to provide an analytic description of the corpus which highlights the important play of D√≠ez-Canedo in the circulation of Italian poetry in Spain, and a historiographic contextualisation in order to explain the criteria that inspired him in the selection of authors and texts throughout his activity. Pending a complete analysis of this important part of the writer‚Äôs oeuvre, I will limit myself to offering, in the last part of the article, a few observations on his way of proceeding in the translation of three short texts that form part of the corpus identified

[English]: The essay, a wide-ranging one due to its multidisciplinary nature, focuses on time in its triple dimension (chronological, kairotic, aionic and, in Betocchi, dynamic, continuous, and static) as shape and life of the Spirit, namely as ‚Äúthe enchantment of the Beyond‚ÄĚ, a passage from the ambiguous disenchantment of an agglutinating subject of a devouring Unknown to the Itinerarium in Deum, searching for an Other Foundation, between the Time of History and the wish for the Eternal, in the steps of Abraham. As such, in Betocchi‚Äôs poetry as a prayer, it offers a theological reflection on creation, between fabula and narrative plot, within a linear dimension of a teleological time rediscovered at last

¬ęFU CHIAMATO ANALFABETO, COME QUASI NON HAVESSE IMPARATO N√ą PUR L‚ÄôALFABETO¬Ľ.

Social agriculture and restorative justice: how social farms fit with probation

How can social farming practices fit with restorative justice? The purpose of this paper is to answer this question by providing a general overview of the implementation of probation in social farms. The first chapters present an introduction to social agriculture in Europe and more specifically in the Italian context, this is followed by an in-depth study of animal assisted interventions: when we speak of social agriculture we refer to a productive activity, carried out in agricultural, which has the aim not only of producing tangible goods but also aimed at the rehabilitation or educational involvement of weak and disadvantaged sections of the population; in this context, interventions assisted with animals, what we commonly define as pet therapy, fit into and assist these practices. Subsequently, the focus shifts to restorative justice practices: the history of these is presented, from its birth to present day, both in the European context and in Italy; thanks to social farms, in fact, alternative justice find a way to be applied: public utility works, and probation are the most common practices in Italy that allow to swerve an alternative sentence to the classic incarceration To conclude, a tangible example is provided: the social promotion association La Fattoria In Citt√†, with which it was possible to interact thanks to the pre-graduate internship carried out, limits and resources, difficulties encountered and proposals will be discussed for wider application of these activities. Thanks to literature data, reports from the major operators' training bodies and direct experience in the association, it will be explained how social farming practices can support applications of restorative justice and how the latter gives social farms new horizons of intervention and new possibilities

Tracing the Critical Reception of Walter Scott in Italy: 1945-2020

In The Reception of Sir Walter Scott in Europe (2007), edited by Murray Pittock, it emerges that when speaking about the European reception of Walter Scott, there is not a dedicated chapter to his reception in Italy. Although the Italian situation is briefly treated in various sections of the volume, the editor himself states in the introduction that ‚Äėit proved impossible to get satisfactory coverage of Portugal or Italy‚Äô. Although there are studies devoted to Scott‚Äôs Italian reception, which specifically focus on his early reception in the nineteenth century, there was not yet a comprehensive analysis of his most recent influence and response in Italy. The entire period from the second half of the twentieth century until today was still uncovered. The main purpose of this research was therefore to retrace the literary and critical history of Walter Scott in Italy, trying to understand the reasons why during 1900 he experienced an evident decline in popularity. The starting point was the review of the critical studies dedicated to Scott during the course of the twentieth century up to the present day. The research then explored the influence of some of the most important Italian (and foreign) intellectuals on Scott‚Äôs reception in Italy. The whole discourse was contextualised according to the main critical theories that marked each phase of the twentieth and early twentieth-first centuries to build a comprehensive analysis of Scott‚Äôs Italian reception. It was also the aim of this research to collect the critical studies, new translations, editions, and re-editions to build a timeline of Scott‚Äôs Italian reception. The final goal was to trace the author‚Äôs presence in the country and understand the fluctuations that characterised his fame over the course of seventy-five years

Donne traducono donne. Paola Faggioli traduttrice di Aino Kallas

Translating women. Aino Kallas‚Äôs translator Paola Faggioli This study focuses on the cultural interaction that enabled the translation and publication of Aino Kallas‚Äôs trilogy Surmaava Eros in Italy during the Fascist regime. The trilogy by the Finnish born, Estonian resident Kallas revolves around three women who rebel against the social norms of the time and hence are punished with death. To analyse the relations between the different agents involved in the translation and publication of the trilogy, the study draws on Susan Bassnett and Andr√© Lefevere‚Äôs theoretical thinking. Interaction between agents, groups and cultures is seen as deeply embedded in their historical, political, ideological and social milieu. Methodologically, the study is informed by microhistory: an approach that in Translation Studies has been applied by scholars like Anthony Pym, Outi Paloposki and Jeremy Munday. The material of the research includes extensive archival sources, paratextual materials as well as the translated texts. As a background, the study explores relevant aspects of the development of the publishing industry in Italy under Fascism, with a specific focus on the translator and on translation practices. In addition, an overview of the cultural and political intercourse between Italy and Finland is provided with a view to investigate some motivations underlying the interest in Finnish literature and culture and to explore what kind of an image the cultural initiatives were aiming to convey to the Italian reader. The study attempts at unravelling the mystery surrounding the translator, Paola Faggioli. As a woman, she was in an inferior position under the patronage of Paolo Emilio Pavolini, translator of the Finnish epic Kalevala and father of the prominent fascist politician Alessandro. On text level, the study aims at identifying the presence of the translator and exploring her choices. The central part of the dissertation tries to unravel the connection between author and translator by shedding light on the negotiations that led to the publication of the trilogy. The sources uncover a cooperation of key mediators motivated by personal reasons. As for the central figure of this study, Paola Faggioli, my findings reveal a complex personal history entangled with power relations: despite enjoying the protection of a fascist patron, she was still a woman in conflict with the social norms. Faggioli emerges, however, as a professional and competent translator and linguist who made her own choices and did not depend on her patron in terms of language competence and translation skills. The case of a marginal literature can uncover networks and issues which do not necessarily emerge in the case of more familiar and larger-scale book markets. This study sheds light on some of the practices adopted by Italian publishers when they negotiated with foreign authors; it uncovers some core aspects of the translation of Finnish literature in Italy and it sets in high relief the career of a woman translator in the period examined. Other agents, their personality and role in intercultural exchanges between Italy and Finland also emerge within the wider theme of the relations between the two countries and the role of ideology and politics in cultural exchange.Naiset tulkitsevat naisia. V√§it√∂stutkimuksessa eri toimijoiden v√§lisi√§ suhteita analysoidaan Susan Bassnettin ja Andr√© Lefeveren teoreettisen ajattelun pohjalta. Toimijoiden, ryhmien ja kulttuurien v√§linen vuorovaikutus kytket√§√§n tiiviisti ajan historialliseen, poliittiseen ja aatteelliseen ymp√§rist√∂√∂n. L√§hestymistapa ammentaa mikrohistoriasta; samaa mikrohistoriallista l√§hestymistapaa ovat soveltaneet k√§√§nn√∂stutkimuksen alalla aiemmin muun muassa Anthony Pym, Outi Paloposki ja Jeremy Munday. Tutkimusaineisto sis√§lt√§√§ arkistomateriaaleja ja paratekstej√§ sek√§ kohdekieleen k√§√§nnetyt tekstit. Tutkimus asetetaan historialliseen ja kulttuuriseen kehykseen esittelem√§ll√§ Italian fasismin aikaisen kustannusteollisuuden kehityksen p√§√§piirteit√§. Tutkimuksessa keskityt√§√§n k√§√§nt√§j√§n rooliin, k√§√§nt√§miseen liittyviin k√§yt√§nt√∂ihin ja periaatteisiin sek√§ Italian ja Suomen v√§liseen poliittiseen ja kulttuuriseen vuorovaikutukseen. Analyysiss√§ selvitet√§√§n, miksi suomalainen kirjallisuus ja kulttuuri nousivat kiinnostuksen kohteeksi ja mink√§lainen kuva Suomesta ja suomalaisista haluttiin antaa italialaiselle yleis√∂lle kulttuuritapahtumien ja kirjallisuuden v√§lityksell√§. V√§it√∂stutkimus haluaa tuoda valokeilaan italiantaja Paola Faggiolin, naisen, joka on j√§√§nyt mentorinsa Paolo Emilio Pavolinin varjoon ‚Äď Pavolinin, joka oli akateemikko, Kalevalan arvostettu k√§√§nt√§j√§ ja my√∂s fasistipuolueen johtaja Alessandro Pavolinin is√§. Tekstej√§ analysoimalla pyrit√§√§n tavoittamaan merkkej√§ Faggiolista k√§√§nt√§j√§n√§ ja tutkimaan h√§nen k√§√§nn√∂svalintojaan. Tutkimuksessa etsit√§√§n lis√§ksi Kallaksen ja Faggiolin v√§list√§ yhteytt√§ j√§ljitt√§m√§ll√§ kanssak√§ymisi√§ ja tekij√∂it√§, jotka johtivat t√§ss√§ tutkimuksessa tarkasteltavan trilogian julkaisemiseen Italiassa. L√§hteet paljastavat, ett√§ avainhenkil√∂iden henkil√∂kohtaiset vaikuttimet olivat merkitt√§v√§ tekij√§ k√§√§nn√∂s- ja julkaisuprosessissa. Tutkimuksessa tuodaan esiin my√∂s Faggiolin valtasuhteiden varjostama asema: vaikutusvaltaisen mentorinsa suojeluksesta huolimatta h√§nen asemansa naimisissa olevan mentorinsa rakastajattarena ja heid√§n yhteisen lapsensa yksinhuoltajana oli yhteiskunnallisten normien vastainen. K√§√§nt√§j√§n√§ h√§n osoittautuu p√§tev√§ksi ja itsen√§iseksi ammattilaiseksi, jonka ei tarvinnut nojata mentorinsa kieli- ja k√§√§nn√∂staitoon. V√§hemm√§n tunnettu kirjallisuus voi paljastaa verkostoja ja n√§k√∂kulmia, jotka eiv√§t v√§ltt√§m√§tt√§ k√§y ilmi suurten painosten kirjamarkkinoita tarkasteltaessa. V√§it√∂stutkimus nostaa esiin naisk√§√§nt√§j√§n uran fasismin aikaisessa Italiassa, valottaa italialaisten kustantajien menettelytapoja heid√§n neuvotellessaan ulkomaalaisten kirjailijoiden kanssa ja tarjoaa havaintoja keskeisist√§ kysymyksist√§ suomalaisen kirjallisuuden k√§√§nt√§misest√§ Italiassa. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan laajemmin my√∂s Italian ja Suomen v√§lisi√§ suhteita sek√§ ideologian ja politiikan vaikutusta kulttuurivaihtoon. T√§ll√∂in n√§kyviin tulee my√∂s muita toimijoita, joilla on roolinsa kulttuurien v√§lisess√§ vuorovaikutuksessa

Un frammento sul fiume. Il Kubla Khan di Coleridge in Italia

    Get PDF
Coleridge‚Äôs Kubla Khan is a poem that poses a great number of problems for translators both for its nature as an oneiric fragment and for its incredible braiding of metrical, phonetic and rhythmic motives and techniques. Studying the reception of the text in Italy is a way not only to see how the text has acquired different meanings in the various versions and interpretative perspectives of the translators, poets, and scholars, but also to trace the variations in the concept of poetry and poetic taste in Italian culture over time. After an introduction tracking Coleridge‚Äôs fortune in Italy and a brief analysis of the source text, the essay considers a number of translations, from the renditions by Mario Praz (1925), Maria Luisa Cervini (1931) and Mario Luzi (1948), to the translation by Marcello Pagnini (1988) ‚Äď who points out the fundamental importance of Coleridge‚Äôs prose premise of the poem as an integral part of the composition ‚Äď and the recent version by Edoardo Zuccato (2018). Keywords: Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Kubla Khan, Translations, History of translation in Italy, Poetics

Large Language Models for Software Engineering: A Systematic Literature Review

Large Language Models (LLMs) have significantly impacted numerous domains, notably including Software Engineering (SE). Nevertheless, a well-rounded understanding of the application, effects, and possible limitations of LLMs within SE is still in its early stages. To bridge this gap, our systematic literature review takes a deep dive into the intersection of LLMs and SE, with a particular focus on understanding how LLMs can be exploited in SE to optimize processes and outcomes. Through a comprehensive review approach, we collect and analyze a total of 229 research papers from 2017 to 2023 to answer four key research questions (RQs). In RQ1, we categorize and provide a comparative analysis of different LLMs that have been employed in SE tasks, laying out their distinctive features and uses. For RQ2, we detail the methods involved in data collection, preprocessing, and application in this realm, shedding light on the critical role of robust, well-curated datasets for successful LLM implementation. RQ3 allows us to examine the specific SE tasks where LLMs have shown remarkable success, illuminating their practical contributions to the field. Finally, RQ4 investigates the strategies employed to optimize and evaluate the performance of LLMs in SE, as well as the common techniques related to prompt optimization. Armed with insights drawn from addressing the aforementioned RQs, we sketch a picture of the current state-of-the-art, pinpointing trends, identifying gaps in existing research, and flagging promising areas for future study

Following thematic and theoretical lines set out in two recent ground-breaking studies by Emanuele Senici on Rossini‚Äôs music, this article questions Italian discourse on the Rossini renaissance. It thus highlights the identity-related meanings for Italians of three crucial moments in the history of this renaissance: in 1925, with the "cycle Rossini" at the TheŐĀaŐātre des Champs-EŐĀlyseŐĀes in Paris; in 1952, with the "Armida" at the Maggio musicale fiorentino with Maria Callas in the title role; in 1969, with the Italian debut of the critical edition of the "Barber of Seville" at the Scala in Milan
