Improvement of Knowledge-Intensive Business Processes Through Analytics and Knowledge Sharing

This applied research focuses on knowledge-intensive business processes (KIBPs) supported by Business Intelligence and Analytics (BI&A), here termed BI&A-supported KIBPs. Examples of these processes include customer-support services, risk and assurance processes, and design of marketing campaigns. This research aims to investigate an industry-informed research challenge of ongoing improvement of BI&A-supported KIBPs, in particular the role of BI&A in process improvement. This paper presents a qualitative research case study, conducted in a large retail distribution company, using a theoretical lens of Work Systems Theory (WST). We describe an innovative approach to ongoing improvement of BI&A-supported KIBP and confirm an important role played by BI&A in this context. Informed by these research insights, we then propose a new theoretical model of ongoing improvement of BI&A-supported KIBP and explain its significance using relevant literature. The model is also highly relevant for industry practitioners looking for new sources of competitive differentiation, beyond BI&A technology

Business process improvement in ERP post-implementation contex

Abstract. The purpose of this research has been studying the role of Business Process Improvement and its tools, techniques and methodologies in such a context, where an ERP system has been fully adopted to the organization. In addition to analyzing the tools relating to BPI, also the subcategories of BPI are researched. These include Business Process Automation, Business Process Optimization, and Business Process Integration. All these can be seen as a subset of BPI, so they cannot be exluded when studying Business Process Improvement. There has been an additional focus on the structures of these business process related terms because there are misintepretations among the concepts and terms even amongst the professionals who have researched the same discipline

Empirical Evidence of RFID Impacts on Supply Chain Performance

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the actual benefits of radio frequency identification (RFID) on supply chain performance through the empirical evidence. Design/methodology/approach - The research reviews and classifies the existing quantitative empirical evidence of RFID on supply chain performance. The evidence is classified by process (operational or managerial) and for each process by effect (automational, informational, and transformational). Findings - The empirical evidence shows that the major effects from the implementation of RFID are automational effects on operational processes followed by informational effects on managerial processes. The RFID implementation has not reached transformational level on either operational or managerial processes. RFID has an automational effect on operational processes through inventory control and efficiency improvements. An informational effect for managerial processes is observed for improved decision quality, production control and the effectiveness of retail sales and promotions coordination. In addition, a three-stage model is proposed to explain the effects of RFID on the supply chain. Research limitations/implications - Limitations of this research include the use of secondary sources and the lack of consistency in performance measure definitions. Future research could focus on detailed case studies that investigate cross-functional applications across the organization and the supply chain. Practical implications - For managers, the empirical evidence presented can help them identify implementation areas where RFID can have the greatest impact. The data can be used to build the business case for RFID and therefore better estimate ROI and the payback period. Originality/value - This research fills a void in the literature by providing practitioners and researchers with a better understanding of the quantitative benefits of RFID in the supply chain

Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns

Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. Impact of Business Intelligence and IT Infrastructure flexibility on Competitive Performance: An Organizational Agility Perspective

There is a growing usage of business intelligence (BI) for better management decisions in different industries. However, empirical studies on BI are still scarce. In this research we study BI from an organizational agility perspective. Organizational agility is the ability to sense and respond to market opportunities and threats with speed and BI can help the sensing part of organizational agility. Drawing on systems theory, dynamic capabilities framework, and literature on competitive performance, organizational agility, business intelligence, and IT infrastructure flexibility, we hypothesize that BI usage and IT infrastructure flexibility are two important sources for an organization’s agility. We developed a research model to examine the effects of BI and IT infrastructure flexibility on organizational agility, which in turn affects an organization’s competitive performance. Harnessing the power of the general public for crowdsourced business intelligence: a survey

International audienceCrowdsourced business intelligence (CrowdBI), which leverages the crowdsourced user-generated data to extract useful knowledge about business and create marketing intelligence to excel in the business environment, has become a surging research topic in recent years. Compared with the traditional business intelligence that is based on the firm-owned data and survey data, CrowdBI faces numerous unique issues, such as customer behavior analysis, brand tracking, and product improvement, demand forecasting and trend analysis, competitive intelligence, business popularity analysis and site recommendation, and urban commercial analysis. This paper first characterizes the concept model and unique features and presents a generic framework for CrowdBI. From Smart Meter Data to Pricing Intelligence -- Visual Data Mining towards Real-Time BI

The deployment of smart metering in the electricity industry has opened up the opportunity for real-time BI-enabled innovative business applications, such as demand response. Taking a holistic view of BI, this study introduced a visual data mining driven application in order to exemplify the potentials of real-time BI to the electricity businesses. The empirical findings indicate that such an application is capable of extracting actionable insights about customer’s electricity consumption patterns, which will lead to turn timely measured data into pricing intelligence. Based on the findings, we proposed a real-time BI framework, and discussed how it will facilitate the formulation of strategic initiatives for transforming the electricity utility towards sustainable growth. Our research is conducted by following the design science research paradigm. By addressing an emerging issue in the problem domain, it adds empirical knowledge to the BI research landscape

An exploration of New Institutional Economics for the strategic analysis of e-business with reference to transformational change

This thesis was submitted for the degree of Docter of Business Administration and awarded by Brunel University on behalf of Henley Management CollegeThis research applies institutional economics theory to management challenges arising in connection with e-business related transformational change. The research was carried out in response to widely recognised problems in managing IT-enabled change in complex organisations. A cyclic approach builds researcher competence in both the chosen theory, New Institutional Economics (NIE), and its application through a series of four contrasting case studies. The case situations, which derive from the researcher’s work as a technology management consultant, are treated as action research experiments which investigate e-business related transformational change in financial services, retail and government settings. A constructivist stance is adopted within the case situations with the researcher acting as a participant observer. Reflective practice is used to improve the experimental method for the case studies through the course of the research, leading to the use of participatory action research (PAR) for the final case. A literature review of NIE shows it to be loosely defined as a theory, so an analytic NIE framework is created to provide a cognitive model. This model is then modified and extended to produce a final theoretical framework. In parallel, a conceptual map of NIE is created from the research as a practical aid to illustrate NIE concepts and linkages. These two models, the theoretical framework and the conceptual map, evolve through the four case situations which were selected from a range of e-business consulting opportunities available to the researcher over the period of the research. The second case study drives the main development of the two models and draws out the necessary and complementary contributions of both transaction cost economics (TCE) and agency theory (AT) as parts of NIE, neither of which is sufficient on its own. The final case study demonstrates application to practice. The overall sequence of case studies shows the researcher’s cognitive growth from being a novice in the theory and its application in the first case through to a level of proficiency in applying NIE to the rigours of e-business practice in the final case. The research makes several contributions to knowledge. It makes a significant methodological contribution by bringing research methods developed for other forms of professional practice to the management discipline. It also makes a significant contribution to theoretical knowledge. It develops two theoretical models of NIE – a conceptual map and a theoretical framework – which present a way of linking NIE concepts in a meaningful way, and a structure by which NIE can be used in the analysis of highly complex organisational situations. These models clarify the complementary roles of TCE and AT, and indicate a reason why so many studies limited to TCE alone have been inconclusive. Applying NIE to the rigours of e-business management produces, in turn, a contribution to IT strategy formulation. The research makes a practical contribution by showing how NIE can be applied to e-business practice, subject to a number of significant caveats. NIE, as a descriptive theory, is shown to provide a powerful conceptual framework when combined with PAR, although both require deep knowledge and skill. In particular, adopting PAR as a case study method depends on an experienced, skilled and committed practitioner for its effective use. Finally, the research finds that NIE’s strengths as a framework for strategic analysis of large scale and complex e-business situations involving transformational change, which make it unduly sophisticated for less challenging situations, mean that NIE is suited to use by highly skilled, specialist consultants rather than by general managers
